Book Synopsis In Pursuit of the Almighty's Dollar by : James Hudnut-Beumler
Download or read book In Pursuit of the Almighty's Dollar written by James Hudnut-Beumler and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2007-03-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day of the week in contemporary America (and especially on Sundays) people raise money for their religious enterprises--for clergy, educators, buildings, charity, youth-oriented work, and more. In a fascinating look into the economics of American Protestantism, James Hudnut-Beumler examines how churches have raised and spent money from colonial times to the present and considers what these practices say about both religion and American culture. After the constitutional separation of church and state was put in force, Hudnut-Beumler explains, clergy salaries had to be collected exclusively from the congregation without recourse to public funds. In adapting to this change, Protestants forged a new model that came to be followed in one way or another by virtually all religious organizations in the country. Clergy repeatedly invoked God, ecclesiastical tradition, and scriptural evidence to promote giving to the churches they served. Hudnut-Beumler contends that paying for earthly good works done in the name of God has proved highly compatible with American ideas of enterprise, materialism, and individualism. The financial choices Protestants have made throughout history--how money was given, expended, or even withheld--have reflected changing conceptions of what the religious enterprise is all about. Hudnut-Beumler tells that story for the first time.

Download or read book Dirty Faith written by David Z. Nowell and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Put Your Faith Into Action Do you ever feel like something in your faith is missing, that going to church, studying the Bible, and tithing just aren't enough? There has to be more, right? What would it look like to truly follow Christ and not just believe in him? David Nowell asked the very same questions, and was led to minister to the "least of these," whom God loves deeply. In Dirty Faith, Nowell shares powerful stories of faith in action, and encourages us to move with him from the sidelines to the front line, to get our hands dirty helping the hopeless, the disenfranchised, and the poor. Loving as God loves is central to the gospel, whether that means taking in foster children, ministering to inmates at the local jail, or something else God has in mind just for you. Let this inspiring book help you find what's been missing in your faith. "David Nowell has challenged not only our view of the church's responsibility in light of the worldwide plague of violence on children--from poverty to homelessness to prostitution--he has challenged our view of Jesus Christ. Nowell's Jesus has dirt under his fingernails and calluses on his hands. The Word becoming flesh is not just incarnation, it is a holiness that is willing to be stained by the brokenness of a world that would abuse an innocent child. I want my staff to read this book. It will challenge them to do what is required of them, and then some." --Dr. Walter Crouch, President/CEO, Appalachia Service Project "Filled with unforgettable stories from the field, Nowell's writing will both break your heart and lift your vision. Dirty Faith is a must-read for those who want to put their faith into action by serving others." --Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer, senior pastor, The Moody Church

Book Synopsis The Quest for the Golden Trout by : Douglas M. Thompson
Download or read book The Quest for the Golden Trout written by Douglas M. Thompson and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2013-09-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The angler's dream of fishing pristine waters in unspoiled country for sleek, healthy trout has turned fishing into a form of theater. It is a manufactured experienceÑmuch to the detriment of our rivers and streams. AmericansÕ love of trout has reached a level of fervor that borders on the religious. Federal and state agencies, as well as nongovernmental lobbying groups, invest billions of dollars on river restoration projects and fish-stocking programs. Yet, their decisions are based on faulty logic and risk destroying species they are tasked with protecting. River ecosystems are modified with engineered structures to improve fishing, native species that compete with trout are eradicated, and nonnative invasive game fish are indiscriminately introduced, genetically modified, and selectively bred to produce more appealing targets for anglersÑincluding the freakishly contrived "golden trout." The Quest for the Golden Trout is about looking at our nationÕs rivers with a more critical eyeÑand asking more questions about both historic and current practices in fisheries management.

Book Synopsis Stewards of the Earth by : Christianity Today
Download or read book Stewards of the Earth written by Christianity Today and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years of evangelical thought on creation care Evangelicals have a complex relationship with environmentalism. Some lament the church's apparent disinterest in humanity's negative impact upon the earth. Others denounce environmentalism as a distraction from the church's mission. In the face of polarization over the issue, how should evangelicals steward creation well? Stewards of the Earth collects five decades of articles from Christianity Today that display the diversity and development of evangelical perspectives on creation care. Some articles address the concerns evangelicals have over cooperating with the broader environmentalist movement or lay out positive ways to navigate or overcome these hesitations. Other articles present constructive approaches to creation care. Readers will gain a nuanced view of evangelical thought over the decades. With a new introduction by Loren Wilkinson and contributions from writers like Bill McKibben, Ronald Sider, Leslie Leyland Fields, and Andy Crouch, these essays preserve the wisdom of the past to provide insight for the future.
Book Synopsis An Informal and Unauthorized Proposition by : A. Hines
Download or read book An Informal and Unauthorized Proposition written by A. Hines and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Constitution is a plan to build a limited government, guaranteeing that federal authorities never have the privilege of unlimited taxation, of invading other lands without cause, of removing the local traditions and cultures of its people, or of undermining their business and property. Over the past 150 years, and the last 50 in particular, America's elect have eliminated the plain and common sense approach our forefathers established. Our Declaration of Independence reminds us that the people ever maintain the right to abolish or alter their form of government so as to assure their safety and happiness. James Madison concludes It is therefore essential that such changes be instituted by some informal and unauthorized propositions, made by some patriotic and respectable citizen or number of citizens." This book details such a plan.
