Book excerpt: Steve Paterson was set for fame and stardom with Manchester United in the 1970s, but from the age of sixteen he became gripped by an addiction to gambling before descending into alcoholism and debt. He became a soccer mercenary in Hong Kong, Australia and Japan, but his gambling and ruinous lifestyle followed him everywhere. Despite his personal problems, Paterson became a successful football manager, first in the Highland League and then, leading Inverness Caledonian Thistle all the way to the brink of promotion to the Premier League before taking the reins at Aberdeen Football Club from which he was sacked as his drinking and gambling escalated. By then, he had spent more than GBP 1m on gambling over a 30 years period and racked up thousands of pounds worth of debt. In November 2008 Paterson decided to confront his addictions and booked into the famous Sporting Chance Clinic in Hampshire. He has now turned his life around and today works as a social worker helping youngsters in the north of Scotland. This candid and brutally honest memoir recounts the heady days of footballing success, twinned with the devastating hubris of his addictive personality. It is a heart-rending and insightful account of one of the most fascinating players and managers in the Scottish game.

Book excerpt: Willie Miller is a hero to tens of thousands of Aberdeen and Scotland fans after a glittering career that made him one of the country's most capped and celebrated players, as well as the most successful ever club captain outside the Old Firm. This book gives a unique insight into professional football during Miller's era and what it was like to lead a team managed by Sir Alex Ferguson and hold aloft the European Cup-Winners' Cup after victory over Real Madrid in 1983. It also tells previously untold stories about Sir Alex gleaned from their seven successful years together at Aberdeen. During that time Aberdeen won three Scottish league titles, four Scottish Cups, one Scottish League Cup, the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Super Cup. During a 65-cap career for Scotland, Willie played against some of the greatest players of his generation like Franz Beckenbauer, Socrates, Michel Platini, and Zico, and played alongside great international teammates such as centre-back partner Alex McLeish, Graeme Souness, Gordon Strachan and Kenny Dalglish.

It is the album of the family of New York sports over more than 150 years as expressed by a series of daily entries on each day of the year. Within the book you'll find famous members of the family and also those little noted nor long remembered. Day by day as you scroll through the years, you will be introduced (or may be re-introduced) to the names who made New York sports one of the most interesting and compelling dramas in the social history of America for the last century and a half.

Book excerpt: Rangers have more than 100 trophies to the club's credit in an illustrious history - but only one of those prizes has been claimed on foreign shores. The triumph over Moscow Dynamo in the 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup final in the Nou Camp stadium is the achievement Ibrox teams have been attempting to emulate for decades since that famous win. To Barcelona and Beyond charts the twists and turns of that celebrated European campaign and tells the real story, in the players' own words, of the men who made it happen. Through a unique collection of interviews with all eleven of the Barca Bears and comprehensive biographical profiles, Paul Smith charts the journey of a group of home-grown players who went on to propel Rangers to continental glory - and just where football's rollercoaster has taken them in the years that have followed. Each player had a major part to play in that most memorable of nights and each tells their story. With additional material studying the experiences of the army of travelling supporters and examining the business aspect of the 1972 triumph, To Barcelona and Beyond pays a lasting tribute to one of the greatest occasions in Scottish football.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Beckham’s arrival in Los Angeles represents the latest attempt to jump-start soccer in the United States where, David Wangerin says, it “remains a minority sport.” With the rest of the globe so resolutely attached to the game, why is soccer still mostly dismissed by Americans? Calling himself “a soccer fan born in the wrong country at nearly the wrong time,” Wangerin writes with wit and passion about the sport’s struggle for acceptance in Soccer in a Football World. A Wisconsin native, he traces the fragile history of the game from its early capitulation to gridiron on college campuses to the United States’ impressive performance at the 2002 World Cup. Placing soccer in the context of American sport in general, he chronicles its enduring struggle alongside the country’s more familiar pursuits and recounts the shifting attitudes toward the “foreign” game. His story is one that will enrich the perspective of anyone whose heart beats for the sport, and is curious as to where the game has been in America—and where it might be headed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monograph of the Common Eider, a large and familiar duck with a long and fascinating cultural history. A common sight around the more northerly shores of the British Isles, the Common Eider is the largest duck in the northern hemisphere. The eider is particularly well adapted to cold-water environments; the insulating properties of eider down are iconic. The species is taxonomically interesting, with a range of well-marked subspecies reflecting the patterns of ice coverage during ancient glaciations, and these ducks have also provided the focus for a number of important behavioural studies, especially on feeding ecology and energy budgets. Eiders have a long association with humans, and have deep cultural significance in many societies. However, modern lifestyles are exposing these ducks to a wide range of new pressures. This monograph provides a comprehensive portrait of the Common Eider; authors Chris Waltho and John Coulson bring together an extensive and diverse international literature, with sections on taxonomy, habitats, breeding biology, population dynamics, diet and foraging, dispersal and migration, and conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering an exhaustive range of information about the five boroughs, the first edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City was a success by every measure, earning worldwide acclaim and several awards for reference excellence, and selling out its first printing before it was officially published. But much has changed since the volume first appeared in 1995: the World Trade Center no longer dominates the skyline, a billionaire businessman has become an unlikely three-term mayor, and urban regeneration—Chelsea Piers, the High Line, DUMBO, Williamsburg, the South Bronx, the Lower East Side—has become commonplace. To reflect such innovation and change, this definitive, one-volume resource on the city has been completely revised and expanded. The revised edition includes 800 new entries that help complete the story of New York: from Air Train to E-ZPass, from September 11 to public order. The new material includes broader coverage of subject areas previously underserved as well as new maps and illustrations. Virtually all existing entries—spanning architecture, politics, business, sports, the arts, and more—have been updated to reflect the impact of the past two decades. The more than 5,000 alphabetical entries and 700 illustrations of the second edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City convey the richness and diversity of its subject in great breadth and detail, and will continue to serve as an indispensable tool for everyone who has even a passing interest in the American metropolis.
