Book excerpt: This is an excellently reproduced stereotaxic atlas of the pig brain. It consists of 60 frontal and 18 sagittal drawings illustrating Nissl-stained sections. A stereotaxic apparatus adapted for the Pig was used to determine the barin coordinates. Radiographic techniques were applied to verify the correct position of the central nervous system structures in the apparatus. The atlas gives frontal and sagittal serial sections of 100&mgr;m, performed in two different animals. Magnified diagrams of brain sections representing the cellular architecture of the brain structures were produced, some of which are illustrated with photomicrographs. Each plate is accompanied by a list of abbreviations used to label structures on the plate, together with the terms which they represent. This work will be a very useful anatomical guide for research on the pig brain.

The second brain is stained using cresyl violet, luxol fast blue, serotonin immunoreactivity, and GABA/benzodiazepine receptor immunoreactivity.

In order to study this interface in the intact functioning organism, appropriate methods for describing and quantifying behavior must be developed. The past twenty years have witnessed a revolution in the study of behavior which has taken us away from the often fruitless theoretical arguments to descriptive behaviorism. Technical achievements in the design of apparatus and the recording of behavior played an important role in these developments, and the resultant behavioral methods have been accepted and found useful in studying the effects of drugs. The development of psycho pharmacology as a discipline owes as much to these behavioral methods as it does to the basic neuropharmacological techniques pioneered for in vitra studies. In the first section of Volume 7, an effort has been made to provide reviews both of theory and practice in behavioral science. Milner's chapter deals with the concept of motivation in a theoretical framework. By contrast, the chapters by Morse et at. and Dews and DeWeese provide a more descriptive view of the various ways in which aversive stimuli control behavior and the importance of schedules of reinforcement in determining the profile of responding in the animal. Palacios, D. I. Wallis and A. Kaumann, and S. Peroutka gave the first Serotonin Club Irvine H. Page Lecture. The rest of the oral programme was put together by the Scientific Organizing Committee based on volunteered research contributions. The invited review lecturers, the platform speak ers and selected poster contributors were invited to write up their contributions for inclusion in this volume. Most complied and this book is the result of their efforts. When instructing the authors prior to the meeting, we emphasized that selected new data should be put in the context of the literature findings. In this way we hoped to achieve topicality yet preserve the review perspective which facilitates its appreciation by the non-special ist. It was truly a pleasure to read the interesting papers which resulted and to prepare them for publication. We believe they convey to a remarkable degree the spirit of what was generally felt to be a highly stimulating exchange of information on matters serotonergic which took place in Basel last July.
