Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steps for the Young Pianist Sixth Steps for the Young Pianist is offered to the public with the hope that both teacher and pupil will find in it a collection of lovely little classics which will be a profitable continuation of the course of study outlined and developed in First Steps for the Young Pianist, Second Steps for the Young Pianist, Third Steps for the Young Pianist, Fourth Steps for the Young Pianist, and Fifth Steps for the Young Pianist or useful and interesting as supplementary music to be studied during the completion of the Lessons contained in the first five Steps. The manner in which the music in Sixth Steps is presented is slightly different from that in which the Lessons in the first five Steps are presented. In the preceding Steps, lesson outlines have been arranged and followed, making possible a gradual and well-balanced develop ment, at the same time, of technic, and the understanding and interpretation of music. In Sixth Steps, however, each chapter or Lesson is given over to one special type or attribute of piano playing, such as the use of legato or staccato touch, rhythmic playing, or the playing of octaves and chords. In some instances, helpful technical preparation has been suggested. It has been the purpose of the writer, in these books - and in other material especially pre pared for the purpose of supplementing and providing for the special needs of each pupil - to develop logically, and in a well-balanced manner, the pupil's capacity and ability to read music as readily as he would read a story or article written in a language with which he is familiar; to lay solid foundations in matters of tone-shading, phrasing, and pedaling; to develop equal facility in the use of all Major keys and Minor keys; to bring the pupil, through the Historical Anecdotes, into a closer intimacy with the lives of great musicians; and, withal, to inspire him to desire, in his playing, not only mechanical accuracy, but also an expressive and artistic interpretation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would you feel receiving piano lessons from a world-renowned and seasoned concert pianist? Indeed, such sessions would be delightfully challenging and insightful ones, as you're inclined to receive all his instructions without question and with full confidence in his expertise and abilities. This is also the attitude that one should adopt when going through Mark Hambourg's This How to Play the Piano. The author himself recommends any piano student to have a "really good and experienced professor" - someone which the famous pianist himself was although he did not insinuate his credentials in this way. He dispenses practical advice regarding the maintenance of one's health as a performer and the decorum one must adopt in performing in public. Hambourg also includes a number of helpful illustrations that the reader can follow easily. He tackles the basics in playing the piano and moves things gradually to the more challenging aspects of performing with such an instrument, such as using the pedal and "making the piano sing." In addition to these, the Russian-British musician also gives tips on selecting and caring for your own piano. Though this volume may be written many decades ago, the principles and tips laid out by its author are still relevant and applicable to the modern piano student, whether young or old, naturally adept or just plain curious. Readers will also get more insights on what it takes to be a committed performer through Hambourg's non-musical advice and be inspired by his words. Book excerpt: Cornelius Gurlitt was one of the later nineteenth century's most prodigious providers of well-graded piano music. The pieces in Opus 82 are important for development of technic, independence of the hands, and the playing of passagework for the young pianist. The pieces are all short and most use intervals no larger than a fifth. These excellent studies may be recommended for sight reading and transposition. Performance notes and impeccable editing by Gail Lew make these volumes indispensable for every piano student.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-Known Piano Solos: How to Play Them by Charles W. Wilkinson is a rare gem for music lovers. Hidden within its many pages are pearls of wisdom which aspiring or even well-trained musicians may not find elsewhere. Wilkinson has undertaken the rather mammoth task of deconstructing some of the finest pianists' style of playing and provided the reader with a detailed analysis of some of the best known piano solos of all time. Well-Known Piano Solos: How to Play Them provides an engaging analysis of the very basis of any composition and Wilkinson's style of writing not only allows the reader to step in to the shoes of famous pianists but also encourages young students to master the technique of playing the piano correctly with numerous mentions of measures, dots, bars and chords. Some of the pianists who find their place in this work include Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy and Grieg among others. Even without a separate section on musical notations for each of the pieces described in this work, Wilkinson is able to provide the reader with pointers on mastering them quickly. Wilkinson takes up individual pieces and in the course of explaining the technicalities of playing them correctly, provides a treasure trove of information and trivia which readers may not find in other books. His narrative on Chopin and Bach especially is worth mentioning as he skilfully simplifies some of the most complex piano compositions of these legends. Since this is not a purely technical work, Well-Known Piano Solos: How to Play Them would provide immense pleasure to casual enthusiasts and trained pianists alike.
