Book excerpt: About The Book What started out in 2006 as a poetry book discussing the stepping stones of life, has transformed into a storyboard of life itself. Since the original version of "Stepping Stones", Chad has married his long time girlfriend, who was the inspiration for many of the original poems in this compilation, and the couple now has a son. This prompted Chad to make a few changes, and add an additional poem titled "My Son" to complete the current stepping stones of his life.

Book excerpt: Stepping Stones is a joint memoir by two longtime participants in movements for social change in the United States. Staughton and Alice Lynd have worked for racial equality, against war, with workers and prisoners, and against the death penalty. Coming from similar ethical backgrounds but with very different personalities, the Lynds spent three years in an intentional community in Northeast Georgia during the 1950s. There they experienced a way of living that they later sought to carry into the larger society. Both were educated to be teachers—Staughton as a professor of history and Alice as a teacher of preschool children. But both sought to address the social problems of their times through more than their professions. After being involved in the Southern civil rights movement and the movement against the war in Vietnam in the 1960s, both Staughton and Alice became lawyers. In the Youngstown, Ohio, area they helped workers to create a variety of rank-and-file organizations. After retirement, they became advocates for prisoners who were sentenced to death or confined under supermaximum security conditions. Through trips to Central America in the 1980s, Staughton and Alice became familiar with the concept of “accompaniment.” To them, accompaniment means placing themselves at the side of the poor and oppressed, not as dispensers of charity or as guilty fugitives from the middle class, but as equals in a joint process to which each person brings an essential kind of expertise. Throughout, the Lynds, who became Quakers in the early 1960s, have been committed to nonviolence. Their story will encourage young people seeking lives of public service in the cause of creating a better world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can answers to the biggest questions in life be found? Today there are many who are unsure whether there is a creator God, are uncertain about religion and yet instinctively feel that their life has a purpose and that values such as love, truth, honesty, beauty, logic and kindness are real. This book has been written to help such people make sense of their existence and to indicate the types of evidence available to help people find a strong rational faith. “So many people think faith is a feeling or a flight of fantasy, by contrast Cambridge-educated medical surgeon, Dr Bernard Palmer, makes it clear that there is outstanding evidence at the basis of Christian belief. But he does not stop there, he then not only shows what that evidence means for our lives, he also reveals what the reader should do about it. That is the rhythm of this excellent book: the evidence, its meaning and our action, which makes this a profoundly challenging read that appeals to the mind, the heart and the will.” Rico Tice Christianity Explored “I am both delighted and honoured to recommend Bernard Palmer’s new book to you. There are three reasons for this. First, he himself truly believes the things he is asking you to believe. Second, he writes about profound matters in such a way that it is not only easy to follow but it is winsome and appealing. But thirdly, he is offering us ‘Stepping Stones’ to a new life by introducing us to Jesus Christ with compelling reasons to become a believer. And this is the most important thing of all.” Frank Retief Retired presiding bishop of the Reformed Evangelical Church of Southern Africa

Book excerpt: Only in retrospect did Felicity realize that walking along mud banks that separated paddy fields in rural India and sitting at the local well for hours on end observing the villagers - who were also observing her - was somewhat incongruous for a European child with light coloured eyes. Likewise, being placed in an orphanage at the age of one when her mother died. Felicity had an unusual way out from her deprivation at the age of twelve when she joined the Deccan Queen railway journey at an elite girls' boarding school run by nuns from Oxford, England graduating with a Cambridge High School Certificate at the age of eighteen. This story traces the stepping stones from the foundling home in Bombay to Felicity stepping off a P&O ship in Sydney, Australia. The timeframe of the story is in the 1930's. 1940's and 1950's, a time of great change as India transitioned from a British colony to an independent nation.

Book excerpt: This book develops the truth that the creation of the family was in God’s heart from before the foundations of the world were laid. In this time of tragic breakdown in the family and the moral decline in our society, the Father’s passion is to restore and reconcile the family back to Himself and to one another. His plan of restoration can be traced through the blood covenants in the Old Testament right up to the New Covenant, when Jesus came to shed His blood and reconcile us to the Father forever. It is time for the covenants to be reintroduced so that we can live our lives and raise our children to walk in covenant with the Living God. If we receive this revelation, we will no longer walk in fear and insecurity and will pass on this heritage of peace from generation to generation.

Book excerpt: This contemporary middle-grade graphic novel about family and belonging from New York Times bestselling author Lucy Knisley is a perfect read for fans of Awkward and Be Prepared. Jen is used to not getting what she wants. So suddenly moving the country and getting new stepsisters shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Jen did not want to leave the city. She did not want to move to a farm with her mom and her mom's new boyfriend, Walter. She did not want to leave her friends and her dad. Most of all, Jen did not want to get new "sisters," Andy and Reese. As if learning new chores on Peapod Farm wasn't hard enough, having to deal with perfect-at-everything Andy might be the last straw for Jen. Besides cleaning the chicken coop, trying to keep up with the customers at the local farmers' market, and missing her old life, Jen has to deal with her own insecurities about this new family . . . and where she fits in. New York Times bestselling author Lucy Knisley brings to life a story inspired from her own childhood in an amazing journey of unlikely friends, sisters, and home. "Funny, sweet, and real." -Jennifer & Matthew Holm, co-creators of the bestselling Babymouse series "This book is gorgeous. Highly recommended." -Kristen Gudsnuk, creator of Making Friends

Book excerpt: Rama and her family, are forced to flee their once-peaceful village to escape the ravages of the civil war raging ever closer to their home With only what they can carry on their backs, Rama and her mother, father, grandfather and brother, Sami, set out to walk to freedom in Europe. This unique picture book was inspired by the stone artwork of Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr, discovered by chance by Canadian children’s writer Margriet Ruurs. The author was immediately impressed by the strong narrative quality of Mr. Badr’s work, and, using many of Mr. Badr’s already-created pieces, she set out to create a story about the Syrian refugee crisis. Orca Book Publishers is pleased to offer this book as a dual-language (English and Arabic) edition.
