Book excerpt: Due to current planetary alignments, our heart center is being flooded with Divine energies, inspiring us to heal our bodies and deal with emotional blocks. Now is the time to journey to the inner landscape and discover true Self. Stepping Stones 2Self is a collection of articles aimed to enhance the understanding of the body/mind/spirit connection, while learning to honor and nourish the Self. In understanding Self, we are able to understand others, and create a more peaceful environment. The rare gift of eveline is more than explaining complicated issues in a clear and simple way. She is passionately involved in all her subjects, lives them first and thus is able to pass her experience on to her readers. Integrating intuition and knowledge from the Knowing Field into her writings, trusting her abilities to be in tune with Higher Knowledge, eveline is a medium through which essential information is given and passing this on to her readers is a true act of love. eveline's articles are deeply connected with the body, mind and spirit; exploring all three of them in a way that transcends our dogmatic view on these subjects. Using the ease of a true seer she shows us alternative paths to walk through life and ways to use our body, mind and spirit to become one with Self and thus with All That Is. ~ L.R.

Book excerpt: Rama and her family, are forced to flee their once-peaceful village to escape the ravages of the civil war raging ever closer to their home With only what they can carry on their backs, Rama and her mother, father, grandfather and brother, Sami, set out to walk to freedom in Europe. This unique picture book was inspired by the stone artwork of Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr, discovered by chance by Canadian children’s writer Margriet Ruurs. The author was immediately impressed by the strong narrative quality of Mr. Badr’s work, and, using many of Mr. Badr’s already-created pieces, she set out to create a story about the Syrian refugee crisis. Orca Book Publishers is pleased to offer this book as a dual-language (English and Arabic) edition.

Book excerpt: Many people know more about the planets Venus and Mars than they do about our home planet, Earth. Unique in our solar system, and so far as we know in the Universe itself, the Earth has been evolving for the past five billion years, and is the result of the dynamic interplay of astronomical, physical, and chemical forces ranging from the vast to the barely perceptible. The evolution of the Earth has never been predictable. Life has come very close to being extinguished many times. After each such crisis, the survivors and their genes have diversified and grown in number to exploit allopportunities. Without such traumas it is hardly likely that evolution's pace could have reached its present advanced level; that of conscious life capable of changing the world, contemplating it, and in doing so changing itself at geologically stupendous rates. In Stepping Stones, Stephen Druryexplores how such a seemingly fragile world could have been formed and developed. Looking at the astonishing leaps, and near catastrophes that have occurred along the way, intermingled with inexorable but slow change, the book interweaves the evidence from geology, physics, biology, and chemistry,to tell an extraordinary story of the Earth's evolution spanning nearly five billion years.

Book excerpt: In the spiritual successor to the best-selling Touchstones, the author continues to explore masculinity and sobriety. Now well beyond recovery’s trailhead, we confront life itself: it isn’t merely abstinence and coping skills, it’s a triumph. Stepping Stones guides your self-help discovery along its next steps, ensuring your recovery finds inspiration, meaning, and brilliance. For many of us, sobriety began uncomfortably. Treatment and counseling unearthed addiction’s thumbprint—substance use, anger, resentments, and behavioral patterns around sex and intimacy—as well as challenged perspectives about religion and spirituality. As addictive behaviors and mind-sets gave way to both mental health and physical wellness, our new sense of self emerged, and our family and friends supported our continuing transformation. This self-help meditation book is designed for men to keep moving forward in recovery. Recovery is well-earned, but life never slows—nor should it. Stepping Stones advances a person’s recovery so that it emerges as a comfortable journey that stays in stride with a person’s overall life and experiences. It offers insight into the many masculine roles men undertake—father and son, friend and lover—and provides actionable meditations for leading a full life. Life isn’t about recovery; recovery is about life.

Book excerpt: One difficulty with interpreting Plato is that his philosophical views are hidden within his dialogues and articulated through his dramatic characters. Nowhere in the dialogues does Plato the philosopher speak directly to his readers. One of the fundamental tenets of Platonism is the assertion that 'virtue is knowledge'. Yet Socrates and the other characters in the dialogues do not maintain consistent views on the role of knowledge in virtue. This book develops a new interpretation of the puzzling claim that virtue is knowledge, while also providing a reading of the dialogues as a whole which harmonizes the apparently diverse statements of their various characters. Michael Cormack examines dialogues from Plato's early and middle periods, emphasizing the role knowledge plays in each. The most significant of Plato's examples of knowledge is the type of knowledge possessed by the craftsman. Using craft knowledge as a guide, Cormack illustrates the similarities and differences between craft knowledge and Plato's concept of moral knowledge - that specific type of knowledge identified with virtue. While the Platonic conception of virtue is widely recognized as the apprehension of universal truths, this book illustrates how the dialogues reveal a number of distinct degrees of understanding that correspond to distinct degrees of virtue. The significance of this interpretation is that Plato has not only revealed the goal of the philosophic life, but has shown us the path - or the 'stepping stones' as he calls them in the Republic - that we should follow to reach that goal.
