Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian Mansfield was serving in the Australian Army when he was selected to command a team of Australian combat engineers to go to Pakistan to train Afghan refugees in mine-clearance procedures. With millions of refugees expected to return to Afghanistan, the United Nations saw a humanitarian crisis looming and requested help from Western countries to tackle the landmine problem. In September 1991, Ian, along with his wife and two young children, left Australia on a one-year assignment … and didn’t return home for 20 years. This highly personal account recalls Ian’s pioneering efforts to set up a civilian program in Afghanistan to clear landmines for humanitarian purposes, and then his decision to leave the Australian Army and join the United Nations. He continued to work in the mine-action sector, setting up programs in Laos and Bosnia, and then working at the policy level at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Stepping into a Minefield highlights the dangers and the tragedies involved in landmine clearance, but also reveals the great humanity, dedication and humour of the thousands of brave men and women clearing landmines today. It also outlines the political, cultural and security ‘minefields’ that Ian had to navigate along the way, which were often more difficult to deal with than the real minefields.

When Ari finds a letter with risky instructions on how to get her memories back, she jumps on the opportunity. Jeremy Sargo wakes up to discover that his best friend lost his memories and moved away. Struggling to deal with the sudden isolation, he plans a money-making scheme to distract himself by volunteering for paid research testing as a fake memory loss victim. Jeremy begins to enjoy this new persona, and he takes the scam one step too far. When the government funds memory loss counseling as part of the Mental Health Initiative Act, Ari and Jeremy cross paths every Tuesday and Saturday afternoon. While Ari struggles to find her memories, Jeremy fights to keep his a secret. But it's only a matter of time before their true identities are exposed.

Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of a US Special Forces soldier who was medically retired after stepping on an IED, and his incredible return to active duty. Sergeant First Class (SFC) Ryan Hendrickson is a brave, determined, and courageous soldier -- a Green Beret clearing the way for his twelve-man team while conducting combat operations against the Taliban. As the "tip of the spear," his role is to ensure the route taken by U.S. and Afghan troops are free of IEDs -- improvised explosive devices. Many soldiers do not survive their last step; those who do often lose at least one limb. While rescuing an Afghan soldier outside a mud-hut compound in 2010 -- knowing that he was in "uncleared" territory -- Ryan stepped on an IED with his right foot. The device exploded, leaving his foot dangling at the end of his leg. American soldiers losing a limb is an all-too-common occurrence. But what makes Ryan's story different is that after undergoing two dozen surgeries and a tortuous rehabilitation, he was medically retired but fought to return to active duty. Multiple skin grafts to his leg and right foot successfully reattached his lower leg, and he was aided in his recovery by wearing a new prosthetic device known as an IDEO (Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis). Once he passed a series of crucial physical tests, Ryan was able to rejoin the Green Berets within a year and physically perform his duties, redeploying to Afghanistan in March 2012. In 2016, he volunteered to return to Afghanistan with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. During a firefight with the Taliban, he risked his life under heavy enemy fire to rescue three Afghan soldiers cut off from friendly forces and return the bodies of two dead Afghan soldiers under the ethos that "no one gets left behind." For his heroic efforts on the battlefield, SFC Ryan Hendrickson was awarded a Silver Star, the nation's third-highest award for valor. An engaging and harrowing account, Tip of the Spear tells the amazing story of one Green Beret's indomitable spirit.

Book excerpt: In Service is the tale of one person's journey into manhood, ultimately finding himself in the theatre of war. It is a journey littered with colourful anecdotes and diverse experience: from military training in the Guards Depot to Trooping the Colour; from academic failure to intelligence work in Northern Ireland; from helping Rudolf Hess out of an ambulance to being tasked with taking the Queen's portrait. Tim Rees colours every experience with profound and often idiosyncratic observations that offer the reader a taste of the sometimes humorous, often arduous and, on too many occasions, brutal reality of service. But, as Tim says, 'The positive effect is the bond of common experience I share with men with whom I served in the army' - a type of bond that, in his opinion, is in danger of being lost in the modern age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When your very life is a minefield, only faith, friends, and family will get you through... Dancing through Minefields is a truly explosive story of will and wisdom. Protagonist Anne Schroeder walks the reader through a life of danger, abuse, and fear; avoiding landmines as she protects her children and unwaveringly keeps her eyes on the light at the end of the tunnel. Which will terrify you more? Mike, who threatens her safety and sanity, or Breast Cancer, which threatens her womanhood, sexuality, and her very life? Will she survive one only to be taken down by the other? Debut author Carol Feller creates a magnificent story of courage in the midst of fear, confronting real issues with corresponding emotionally- charged accounts of Anne's fight against both spousal abuse and Breast Cancer. "Descriptions were most apt and put me right in the story. Your story is compelling, convincing and uplifting." Lois Hjelmstad, author of Fine Black Lines "What you had to say was powerful, in spite of being very sad..." Jane Lukic, lyricist and performer, Breath after Breath from album After the Storm "Vivid, relatable, and above all, encouraging!" Rachel Mitchell Library Director
