Book excerpt: "This is an account of how Stephenson, Blake became in its heyday the most significant typefounder and printers' equipment supplier in Britain and the Commonwealth. Although the quality of type produced was of the highest order, the design of many of the typefaces issued often left much to be desired. Typographical novelty and fashion, particularly in the late nineteenth century, took precedence over good design. However, Stephenson, Blake's type, renowned for its quality and durability, sold well and typefounding proved to be a profitable business." "The rise of Stephenson, Blake spans five generations and many innovations. How the firm met the challenges is a fascinating read. This account of the last of the Old English Typefounding Companies belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in typographical or printing history and Britain's great manufacturers."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Giving Type Meaning written by Mia Cinelli and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we encounter typography, how do we know what it means? How is the tone of type influenced by the way it is set, when it is made, and where it exists? Considering the social, spatial, and temporal contexts of visual language, this text informs and inspires students, educators, and professionals looking to engage more deeply with the letterforms they use and see. Featuring diverse typographic works, closer looks, and interviews with practicing artists and designers, Giving Type Meaning serves to inform how and why we understand what type communicates. The book includes: - The importance and impact of cultural and social context across the expanded field of art and design - How to use visual, physical, and gestural space to inform meaning - The ways time impacts type, such as historical references, recontextualizations, and the use of time as medium - A range of global examples, including Lushootseed language letterforms (Lushootseed Sulad by Juliet Shen), Arabic calligraphy and type design (Regard Each Other as Brothers by Josh Berer, Mirsaal by Rana Abou Rjeily), American civil rights inspired type (Martin by Tré Seals), Italian concrete poetry (Storia Del Monumento by Mirella Bentivoglio), and animated Chinese characters (Motion Type Project by Ting-An Ho)

Book Synopsis Is Every Typeface a Revival? by : BA Visual Communication ZHdK

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication was initiated during a Type Design brief at Zurich University of the Arts. Students were tasked to select an typeface published before 1999, to which they had a strong emotional connection, either positive or negative. Parallel to articulating personal emotions, students also collected information about the designer, type foundry, historical context and technology of production that led to the creation of the typeface. Then they proposed a contemporary redesign or revival. The design methodology was flexible, allowing for a range of approaches: from a classic revival in which the designers used their skills to digitize a typeface that was unavailable (or available in poor quality only), to a different design interpretation of the typeface. It was also possible to use the historical typeface as a mere formal or conceptual inspiration for a new creation. In different ways, then, the students investigated the definition, role and limitation of a revival typeface today. Their research and design processes are reflected in the texts which the students present in this publication, along with specimen pages for their typeface. The texts grew out of a two-weeks writing class at Zurich University of the Arts called Designers as Writers. Considering a broad range of writing practices pursued by designers long before (and also while), academic thesis writing took hold at art schools, from Jan Tschichold, Anna Simons and Hildegard Korger to Adrian Frutiger and Otl Aicher, from Hans-Rudolf Lutz and Fiona Ross to Zuzana Licko, Dexter Sinister, Alphabettes and more, the students familiarized themselves with (various combinations of) four basic approaches to writing: autobiographical, programmatic, historiographical and theoretical. These approaches informed daily writing exercises and staged impromptu readings in the evening, and eventually they also informed, to various degrees, the texts about the typefaces.
