Book excerpt: This thesis presents research on novel laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray sources based on inverse Compton scattering and applications of their X-ray radiation using the Munich Compact Light Source (MuCLS) as an example. It provides an introduction to the theory of this laser-electron interaction, laser resonators and X-ray interactions with matter. On this basis, upgrades to the laser system including the development of a new laser optic, X-ray beam stabilisation and two techniques for fast X-ray energy switching of inverse Compton sources are presented. On the application side, the beamline, designed and developed for the inverse Compton X-ray source at the MuCLS, is described before various techniques and applications are demonstrated at this laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray facility. Among them are K-edge subtraction imaging, X-ray phase contrast imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, a new X-ray microscopy technique, called full-field structured-illumination super-resolution X-ray transmission microscopy, is presented. Apart from research conducted at the MuCLS, this thesis contains an in-depth overview on the state of the art of the various types of inverse Compton X-ray sources that have been realised so far. Accordingly, this thesis may serve as a guide and reference work for researchers working with inverse Compton X-ray sources as well as future users of such devices.

Book excerpt: On a cul-de-sac, near a park, lives a little girl named Stephanie and her friends Jason and Bubbe...In the second book of the series, a first airplane ride, a first school snow day, learning how to read and ice skate, and coping with a new baby brother in the family are a few of the firsts Stephanie is about to experience. Along the way, she learns about life, about building friendships, and about the joys of shared adventures. For parents and caregivers everywhere, here is the story of the childhood journey and the growth that takes place in so many different ways. As a business writer for more than thirty-five years, Richard J. Trilling has published books and articles and written successful business proposals for clients. His foray into writing for children, however, did not begin until his grandchildren were born. Until that time he was the family's oral storyteller. In his Stephanie and Friends series, many of the stories have been adapted from experiences his own children went through when they were youngsters. Trilling, who considers himself more of a communicator than a writer, taught at the university level and is about to teach a course to retirees.Originally from Manhattan, New York, he has made his home in Durham, North Carolina, for forty years and is working on publishing his third professional book. Book excerpt: Based on accessible information, it is the absolute truth that District Judge Ayers of Bedford County Court in Bedfordshire, England, could not spell the word, “emphasise” and/or did not know the meaning and correct grammatical employment of the words “emphasis” and “will.” A mistake is not impossible, but it should be less likely in a proof-read and approved judgment. A mistake should also be inversely proportional to rank and experience. “The report, by the OECD warns that the UK needs to take significant action to boost the basic skills of the nation’s young people. The 460-page study is based on the first-ever survey of the literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving at work skills of 16- to 65-year-olds in 24 countries, with almost 9,000 people taking part in England and Northern Ireland to make up the UK results. The findings showed that England and Northern Ireland have some of the highest proportions of adults scoring no higher than Level 1 in literacy and numeracy – the lowest level on the OECD’s scale. This suggests that their skills in the basics are no better than that of a 10-year-old.” A significant decline in educational standards is incompatible with the competent administration of the law. Competent administration of the law should be an inviolable natural right, otherwise you have The Law, Paralysed.

When Dr. Daniel Lowell and his partner, Dr. Stephanie D’Agostino, discover a new cloning procedure that utilizes stem cells to treat otherwise incurable and degenerative diseases, they know they’ve hit the medical jackpot. But with their cutting-edge method pending approval, they run into a roadblock by the name of Senator Ashley Butler, who views their technique as an attack on traditional American values. Then Butler is diagnosed with rapidly progressing Parkinson’s disease, and he must make a Faustian pact with the very doctors whose groundbreaking technology he is trying to destroy: treatment in exchange for unwavering support. But the DNA transference procedure has never been tested before, and working under less than favorable conditions to keep the premature trial under wraps, the doctors place their careers—and their patient’s life—at risk, all in the name of scientific progress. Once they hit the point of no return, they feel invincible, but when Butler starts experiencing violent, horrifying seizures, they realize their luck may have run out…

Book excerpt: Three new doctors—all women—struggle to balance professional ambitions and personal relationships, triumphs and crises, uncertainties and decisions, through one pressure-packed day and the first year of their careers in medicine Each year, on the third Thursday in March, more than 15,000 graduating medical students exult, despair, and endure Match Day: the decision of a controversial computer algorithm, which matches students with hospital residencies in every field of medicine. The match determines where each graduate will be assigned the crucial first job as an intern, and shapes the rest of his—or, in increasing number, her—life. In Match Day, Brian Eule follows three women from the anxious months before the match through the completion of their first year of internship. Each woman makes mistakes, saves lives, and witnesses death; each must keep or jettison the man in her life; each comes to learn what it means to heal, to comfort, to lose, and to grieve, while maintaining a professional demeanor. Just as One L became the essential book about the education of young attorneys, so Match Day will be for every medical student, doctor, and reader interested in medicine: a guide to what to expect, and a dramatic recollection of a pressured, perilous, challenging, and rewarding time of life.
