Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can anyone really write a book, about self, that has a true beginning and a true end? I believe one can only write about a time span between the two. To encompass more than that must be left to someone else after one is gone. So one could call this book a series of essays, increments of time within the cycle of life. One could call it a series of experiments, of lessons, as well as of choices made. One could also call it a series of philosophical thoughts underscored by life. Living a life, living the life, one human individual no different than any other. Acting out life, re-acting to life, we all do it. Is one anymore or anyless than another's? It depends on the choices made. As the reader peruses a chapter here, a chapter there, the response could very well be, "Oh, I remember that!" "Oh, I've been there!" Etc., etc. There is a synchronicity in life it seems, and universal mind is part of it. Are we different? Yes, but ... Are we the same? Yes, but ... Reading the book and reliving memories is nostalgia in action. How far back can one go when one seeks to remember? Amazingly quite a way back. Can one remember every word spoken? No. The writers, who say they can remember such detailed conversations, have taken literary license with their work. Unless they were fortunate to have been able to record everything or to have been able to keep a daily journal in extreme detail. Reading about a conversation of some fifty, sixty years in such exact detail is suspect. It begins to border on fiction . So to create and recreate a life in progress it must be understood memories can be fickle. Never-the-less, however one manages to gather them together, they still make interesting reading. Yes a door was opened and what spilled forth revealed the life of one human being. The memories in the book do not quite cover a century, but they come pretty close. It was a period that seemed to take quantum leaps. We humans lived it, we ooed and aahed through all the events that took place on our watch. We were sad and we rejoiced. We even had that fleeting thought, "Will there be a tomorrow?" as we seemed to be living on the razors edge. There was, there is, there will be ... If we humans actually begin acting civilized, instead of pretending to be.

Book excerpt: Hile his expected macho super-patriotism is very much in evidence, Liddy (Will: An Autobiography) adds an interesting twist to his latest thriller. Ex-Navy SEAL Michael Stone is jolted out of his placid real-estate law practice when the sister of a Vietnam buddy is arrested for trespassing at a chemical plant run by a West German corporation in New York's Hudson Valley. The Germans, led by the ruthless Metz, try to retrieve animal rights activist Sara Rosen's photos of an animal-experimentation lab and to intimidate Mike with a vicious biker gang. After Sara and her inept, idealist boyfriend get themselves into dire peril, Stone, with a trio of former SEALs and Sara's brother, comes to the rescue. Their next job is to stop international terrorists from wiping out Manhattan. The derring is done very well, with graphic details built around shocking descriptions of animal experimentation. What may surprise readers is Liddy's convincing case against unnecessary, FDA-forced cruelty to animals. The ending is a bit abrupt, but otherwise Liddy's touch is deft.

Book excerpt: It’s been sixteen years since “Ray Boy” Calabrese’s actions led to the death of a young man. The victim’s brother, Conway D’Innocenzio, is now a 29-year-old Brooklynite wasting away at a local Rite Aid, stuck in the past and drawn into a darker side of himself when he hears that Ray Boy’s has been released. But even with the perfect plan in place, Conway can’t bring himself to take the ultimate revenge.Meanwhile, failed actress Alessandra returns to her native Gravesend after the death of her mother, torn between a desperate need to escape immediately back to LA and the ease with which she sinks back into neighborhood life. Alessandra and Conway are walking eerily similar paths—staring down the rest of their lives, caring for their aging fathers, lost in the youths they squandered—and each must decide what comes next.In the tradition of American noir authors like Dennis Lehane and James Ellroy, William Boyle’s Gravesend brings the titular neighborhood to life in this story of revenge, desperation, and escape.

Book excerpt: This is a story about an adolescent girl, Francine Josephine, who was abused by her mentally ill birth mother and lived in the dregs of society for the first ten years of her life. She found warmth, kindness, and happiness with her foster mother and birth father, who immediately fell in love and married. Though shut off from beauty and loved so little in her childhood, she grew up to be an empathetic, altruistic, sensitive, forgiving, thoughtful, and compassionate young woman. Such rarities this girl possesses at such a tender age. For these attributes are not often found in ordinary everyday people for they do not appreciate what life has to offer and who take God’s gifts for granted. Francine, always believing in the best of all people, always giving them the benefit of the doubt and second chances, always wanting to please everybody and wanting everyone to be happy, is what she happens to be like. Although knowing her parents were estranged from their siblings, it was Francine who brought them together, thus becoming a tight-knit, close, loving family. When she met her paternal grandparents for the first time, she was warm and kind to her grandfather, who was afflicted with dementia and of whom she had no recollection of. As for her grandmother, whom she was named after, she formed a loving and close bond. She is very curious about other people in her parents’ lives that she has never met or who have never knew of her existence but nonetheless thinks of them lovingly and as part of herself and her family. But one day, Social Services informed her that her birth mother wants to see her, which she agrees to do, surmising that maybe this woman had been rehabilitated and was remorseful or at least civil, as it was Francine’s nature to be understanding. Unfortunately, nothing came about as she had hoped, and for that she suffered from it. But afterward, does Francine regress back into her shell after these past few years of getting to love and trust people, or does she grow up and accept what had happened to her during that one fateful encounter and become the fine young woman that everyone who knows her portrays her to be?
