Book excerpt: This report documents how Libyan authorities have arbitrarily arrested undocumented foreigners, mistreated them in detention, and forcibly returned them to countries where they could face persecution or torture, such as Eritrea and Somalia. From 2003 to 2005, the government repatriated roughly 145,000 foreigners, according to official Libyan figures.

This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much-needed primer on the use of laser flow cytometry for stem cell analysis Laser flow cytometry is a powerful tool for rapid analysis of cells for marker expression, cell cycle position, proliferation, and apoptosis. However, no resources specifically address the use of this methodology for the study of stem cells; this is especially important as stem cell analysis involves specialized methods and staining procedures based on specific characteristics such as marker expression, cell size, drug transport, and efflux of the stem cells. Now, this book reviews these procedures, discusses the science behind them, and provides real-world examples to illustrate the usefulness of the methods. It brings together world-class experts in pathology, biophysics, immunology, and stem cell research, who draw upon their extensive experience with the methods and show examples of good data to help guide researchers in the right direction. Chapter coverage includes: Stem cell analysis and sorting using side population Flow cytometry in the study of proliferation and apoptosis Stem cell biology and application Identification and isolation of very small embryonic-like stem cells from murine and human specimens Hematopoietic stem cells—issues in enumeration Human embryonic stem cells: long-term culture and cardiovascular differentiation Limbal stem cells and corneal regeneration Flow cytometric sorting of spermatogonial stem cells Breast cancer stem cells Stem cell marker expression in cells from body cavity fluids This book is an essential resource for all graduate students, practitioners in developing countries, libraries and book repositories of universities and research institutions, and individual researchers. It is also of interest to laboratories engaged in stem cell research and use of stem cells for tissue regeneration, and to any organization dealing in stem cell and tissue regeneration research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides an authoritative multidisciplinary overview of contemporary African international migration. It endeavours to present a single source of reference on issues such as migration history, trends, migrant profiles, narratives, migration-development nexus, migration governance, diasporas, impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, among others. The handbook assembles a multidisciplinary contributor team of distinguished and upcoming Africanist scholars, practitioners, researchers, and policy experts both inside and outside Africa to contribute their perspectives on contemporary African migration. It attempts to address some of the following pertinent questions: What drives contemporary migration in Africa? How are its patterns and trends evolving? What is the architecture of migration governance in Africa? How do migration, diaspora engagement and development play out in Africa? What are the future trajectories of African migration? The handbook is a valuable resource for practitioners, politicians, researchers, university students, and academics interested in studying and understanding contemporary African migration.

Book excerpt: This volume is the first to describe all clinically and experimental relevant aspects of primary and secondary brain stem lesions important to clinicians. It contains a detailed description of the computer-tomographical and morphological changes of the cerebral cisterns in acutely and chronically increased intracranial pressure. The prognostic value of clinical parameters of primary and secondary brain stem lesions is demonstrated. The possibilities of assessing the clinical course by computer-aided evaluation are presented. In addition to that, comprehensive view of morphological, radiological and clinical findings, extensive investigation concerning blink reflex (BR) and auditory evoked brain stem potentials (BAEP) supply highly relevant functional aspects of those lesions. The effects of raised intracranial pressure upon BR, BAEP as well as upon cerebral blood flow and focal flow in different brain areas were studied in animal experiments and reveal new and fascinating conclusions. Based on these investigations, a mathematical model following modern concepts of system analysis was developed. The model includes the intracranial system, autoregulation of cerebral flow (cardiovascular components) and the short-time behaviour of arterial blood pressure regulation.

Book excerpt: Biology and Engineering of Stem Cell Niches covers a wide spectrum of research and current knowledge on embryonic and adult stem cell niches, focusing on the understanding of stem cell niche molecules and signaling mechanisms, including cell-cell/cell-matrix interactions. The book comprehensively reviews factors regulating stem cell behavior and the corresponding approaches for understanding the subsequent effect of providing the proper matrix molecules, mechanical cues, and/or chemical cues. It encompasses a variety of tools and techniques for developing biomaterials-based methods to model synthetic stem cell niches in vivo, or to enhance and direct stem cell fate in vitro. A final section of the book discusses stem cell niche bioengineering strategies and current advances in each tissue type. Includes the importance of Cell-Cell and Cell Matrix Interactions in each specific tissue and system Authored and edited by authorities in this emerging and multidisciplinary field Includes valuable links to 5-10 minute YouTube© author videos that describe main points

Book excerpt: This volume is based on a workshop on "Effects of accumulation of air pollutants in forest ecosystems'; held in GOttingen, Federal Republic of Germany, from May 16-18, 1982. This work'shop was initiated and sponsored by the Environmental Agency of the Federal Republic of Germany (project officer: Dr. J. Pankrath) as part of a research contract (project leader: Dr. B. Ulrich). THE PROBLEM SEEN UNDER THE ASPECT OF ADMINISTRATION The problem of forest damage caused by air pollution is not new in Europe. Already in 1983 a comprehensive report from Schroeder and Reuss about vegetation damages by fume in the Harz mountains was published. In 1923, Prof. Dr. Julius Stocklasa of the Bohemian Technical Highschool in Prague was concerned with research of toxical effects of sulphur dioxide in his publication "The damage of vegetation by flue gas and exhalations of facili ties". This comprehensive and instructive work concludes with the sentence: "It is already high time for the governments of all cultural states to take legal, police and private measures in order to prevent damage by flue gases". In the neighbourhood of industries with high gaseous and dust emissions damages have been shown to occur for a long timei these deleterious effects have influenced the growth of trees and in extreme cases have even caused their early death.
