It consists of an unmoderated, heterogeneous, sodium-cooled reactor with a nominal thermal power output of 62.5 MW; an intermediate closed loop of secondary sodium coolant; and a steam plant that produces 20 MW of electrical power through a conventional turbine generator. The EBR-II heat transport system continues to operate satisfactorily after 18 years. This represents about 89,000 hours of steaming, which results in a total integrated thermal power production of about 215,000 MWd. In this time, the steam generator has experienced over 580 plant startups and 349 reactor scrams. The plant capacity factor for the past five years has been in excess of 70%, and in fact has averaged almost 60% over the last thirteen years. This excellent record is partly attributable to the trouble-free operation of the steam generator which, aside from an initial construction tube-to-tubesheet weld defect, has had a plant availability of 100%.

Book excerpt: A model of a once-through steam generator (OTSG) with moving boundaries and variable nodes was developed for liquid-metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) applications. The main advantage of the current model is its ability to generate a variable number of nodes. The OTSG model consists of four regions identified as subcooled, nucleate-boiling, film-boiling, and superheated. The number of nodes within each region is variable, which allows the user to change the number of nodes and assess this effect on the resulting solution. The model also permits the elimination of regions (during a cool-down transient) or the formation of regions (start-up, or reheat after a cool-down transient). The model can also be used to simulate a boiler by eliminating the film-boiling and superheated regions. The model permits the user to select the appropriate heat-transfer correlations or use the default selections. The model has a separate section where steady-state values are determined before the code enters the transient section. The paper describes the formation of the model, and the steady-state and transient solution methods. Typical results are presented.

Perhaps the most severe transient to which an LMFBR steam generator may be subjected is known as the water-side isolation and dump transient, often called the blow-down transient. LMFBR steam generators must be designed to accommodate a small but finite number of the blow-down transients. The purpose of this investigation was to perform a blow-down experiment in a well instrumented, full scale, single tube model of an LMFBR steam generator. The data may be used directly in steam generator design and as a validation point for steam generator mathematical models in plant transient computer codes.

Four major topics were reviewed, describing the results obtained as well as the direction of future tests. These topics are: carbon transport in sodium, effect of carbon loss/gain upon materials in the reactor Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS), corrosion fatigue and aqueous corrosion. The results support the initial assumptions made in specifying the use of 2-1/4Cr-1Mo as the construction material for the evaporator and superheater and Type 316 piping of the IHT system. Future direction of the experimental programs is to further verify the materials choice and to also obtain information which will be essential during the plant installation, operation and reliability of the components.
