Book excerpt: The textbook idea and the purpose of class-room use have continually been kept in mind. Mechanical form and manner of working are illustrated by selected, typical examples of construction rational theory is built up, from fundamental concepts to the fully-developed ideal steam engine and actual performance is studied and compared with the ideal, an especial effort being made to set forth clearly and logically the empirical knowledge which must fill the gap between them. Viewing the steam plant as a whole, a line is drawn between the members that have to do with the generation and impartation of heat, and those concerned with its conversion into work through the agency of steam. In other words, the furnace and boiler, with their accessories, are taken to constitute a subject for treatment elsewhere, except that allusion is freely made to their functions. But on the side of the steam machine a comprehensive presentation is undertaken to the writer it appears that the study of the piston engine and of the turbine can most effectively and profitably be combined in a single course. It is assumed that the student approaches the subject with at least a general knowledge of the form and working of the steam plant, and with a good preparation in the elements of physics and of mechanics. All deductions along the latter lines begin, however, with basal facts or principles, so that the book shall be self-contained on that side. In the matter of thermodynamics, which is carried only so far as it is of immediate use and application, a special effort is made to develop concepts and ideas, not merely to build up a mathematical, abstract structure on a few axioms. An excess of mathematics is avoided, preference being largely given to graphical methods. Many numerical examples illustrate and enforce the text, emphasize the quantitative side of the subject, and will suggest problems for classroom use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Boilers, Engines and Turbines In the following pages the author has endeavoured to set forth the principles and practice of steam, as they are understood by modern engineers, for the use of the student, using the term in its wide sense, viz. to include all those to whom a knowledge of steam and of steam-using apparatus will be of service. With the universal employment of power, a knowledge of the properties of steam is becoming daily of more and more importance to engineers of all branches, and to large numbers of business men and others who are not directly engaged in the practical application of steam appliances. The author has endeavoured to set out, in simple language, and with the aid of only the very simplest forms of mathematics, the properties of water, of steam, of air, and of the gases that enter into the process of combustion, and he has also endeavoured to give a resumé of the latest practice in steam, and a description of the latest appliances for its economical generation and use. With the ever-increasing demands for power, and with the repeated warnings from scientists of the possible shortness of coal, and again with the steadily increasing cost of mining coal in the United Kingdom, sources of economy in the use of steam, it has appeared to the author, are of increasing importance; and he has endeavoured to give a clear and simple explanation of the different apparatus designed to produce economy, and of the leading forms on the market. The book is divided into six chapters. In the first chapter the author has dealt with the underlying principles upon which the use of steam apparatus is based. In the second chapter he has described the principles and construction, and, as far as space has allowed, the working of the different forms of boilers on the market. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power Plant Instrumentation and Control Handbook, Second Edition, provides a contemporary resource on the practical monitoring of power plant operation, with a focus on efficiency, reliability, accuracy, cost and safety. It includes comprehensive listings of operating values and ranges of parameters for temperature, pressure, flow and levels of both conventional thermal power plant and combined/cogen plants, supercritical plants and once-through boilers. It is updated to include tables, charts and figures from advanced plants in operation or pilot stage. Practicing engineers, freshers, advanced students and researchers will benefit from discussions on advanced instrumentation with specific reference to thermal power generation and operations. New topics in this updated edition include plant safety lifecycles and safety integrity levels, advanced ultra-supercritical plants with advanced firing systems and associated auxiliaries, integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and integrated gasification fuel cells (IGFC), advanced control systems, and safety lifecycle and safety integrated systems. Covers systems in use in a wide range of power plants: conventional thermal power plants, combined/cogen plants, supercritical plants, and once through boilers Presents practical design aspects and current trends in instrumentation Discusses why and how to change control strategies when systems are updated/changed Provides instrumentation selection techniques based on operating parameters. Spec sheets are included for each type of instrument Consistent with current professional practice in North America, Europe, and India All-new coverage of Plant safety lifecycles and Safety Integrity Levels Discusses control and instrumentation systems deployed for the next generation of A-USC and IGCC plants
