Book excerpt: A story about baseball, family, the American Dream, and the fight to turn Los Angeles into a big league city. Dodger Stadium is an American icon. But the story of how it came to be goes far beyond baseball. The hills that cradle the stadium were once home to three vibrant Mexican American communities. In the early 1950s, those communities were condemned to make way for a utopian public housing project. Then, in a remarkable turn, public housing in the city was defeated amidst a Red Scare conspiracy. Instead of getting their homes back, the remaining residents saw the city sell their land to Walter O'Malley, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Now LA would be getting a different sort of utopian fantasy -- a glittering, ultra-modern stadium. But before Dodger Stadium could be built, the city would have to face down the neighborhood's families -- including one, the Aréchigas, who refused to yield their home. The ensuing confrontation captivated the nation - and the divisive outcome still echoes through Los Angeles today.

Book excerpt: A gripping graphic novel that tells a boy’s experience in a WWII Japanese internment camp, and the lessons that baseball teaches him. Sandy Saito is a happy boy who’s obsessed with baseball — especially the Asahi team, the pride of his community. But when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, his life, like that of every North American of Japanese descent, changes forever. Forced to move to a remote internment camp, he and his family cope as best they can. And though life at the camp is difficult, Sandy finds solace in baseball, where there’s always the promise of possibilities. Through his experience, Sandy comes to realize that life is a lot like baseball. It’s about dealing with whatever is thrown at you, however you can. And it’s about finding your way home.

Book excerpt: It is 1947 and Yankee fever grips the Bronx. Nine-year-old Joey Sexton joins the neighborhood kids who flock to the park to team up and play. However, Joey is of mixed race and his skin is lighter than the other kids’. He is seldom picked. When Joey’s mother dies, he is sent to live with his mother’s estranged family. Joey is whisked away to Brooklyn. Though it’s just across town, it might as well be a different world. His grandfather, his aunt Frieda, and his ten-year-old cousin Roberta are not only white, they are Jewish. Joey knows nothing about Brooklyn or Judaism. The only thing that’s constant is the baseball madness that grips the community. Only this time, the heroes aren’t Joey’s beloved Yankees. They are the Brooklyn Dodgers, especially Jackie Robinson, a man whose struggle to integrate baseball helped set the stage for black America’s struggle for acceptance and civil rights. Joey’s story takes readers to a time when America’s favorite pastime became a battleground for human rights.

Book excerpt: Ten years ago, Dylan McCormick and Maggie Jennings were two eighteen-year-olds in love. With a cold father and absent mother at home, he was drawn to her warmth, her humor, and her kindness. She was the best thing that had ever happened to him. But then he had to let her go so she could have a chance at a better life. One that didn’t involve late-night diners and rusted out cars and counting pennies. And so, he shattered his own heart to give her a chance at something more. Maggie thought Dylan would be her future, not her past. But for ten years now, that’s where he’s been—until he gets traded to the Dallas Longhorns, the pro baseball team Maggie works for. And she can see firsthand that the boy she once loved is now a man, but with the same passion for the game, the same athleticism and tenderness that drew her to him. But a decade ago, he chose baseball over her. What if he breaks her heart again? Dylan wants a second chance with the woman he never stopped loving. And this time, he’s going to fight for her.

The majority of the furnishings and other household items came from 'abandoned' Jewish apartments and were shipped to Germany. After the war, Holocaust survivors returned to Paris to discover their homes completely stripped of all personal possessions or occupied by new inhabitants. In 1945, the French provisional government established a Restitution Service to facilitate the return of goods to wartime looting victims. Though time-consuming, difficult, and often futile, thousands of people took part in these early restitution efforts. Stealing Home demonstrates that attempts to reclaim one's furnishings and personal possessions were key in efforts to rebuild Jewish political and social inclusion in the war's wake. Far from remaining silent, Jewish survivors sought recognition of their losses, played an active role in politics, and turned to both the government and each other for aid. Drawing on memoirs, oral histories, restitution claims, social workers' reports, newspapers, and government documents, Stealing Home provides a social history of the period that focuses on Jewish survivors' everyday lives during the lengthy process of restoring citizenship and property rights. It examines social rebirth through the prism of restitution and argues that the home was critical in shaping the postwar relationship between Jews and the state, and in the successes and failures associated with rebuilding Jewish lives in France after the Holocaust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When parents become unable to protect their assets due to infirmity or death, your inheritance is vulnerable. Usernames, passwords, certificates of title, deeds, identification cards, and physical possession is all that stands between your inheritance and cons. Parents plan for incapacity and death by going to an attorney for a will, trust, and power of attorney. While those instruments are useful for managing and transferring assets, they are useless in protecting them against theft. Instead, they create greater vulnerability because they must be carried out by someone else and are easily amended, revoked, and obtained by cons through manipulation and forgery. Cons hide in plain sight while planning strategies to steal your inheritance. They blend well because cons never look like cons. They look like your friends, relatives, and neighbors. They resemble your trusted accountant, investment advisor and minister. They are also perfect strangers. Once they decide to steal an inheritance, cons are relentless. They don't stop until everything is taken. This book brings awareness to inheritance theft. It also reveals six steps to wiping out an entire estate. Becoming familiar with those steps will help you identify cons, detect suspicious behavior, and take preventive action before it's too late.

Book excerpt: Being the only woman working for a professional baseball team isn't easy. As the San Diego Shock's newest athletic trainer, Allie knows all about long hours, endless travel, and warding off players' advances. Given she's already the subject of a handful of rumors about how "lucky" she was to have earned such a coveted position, she can't so much as flutter an eyelash a player's way if she wants to be taken seriously. But number eleven is doing more than fluttering eyelashes Allie's way. Far more. Luke Archer is at the top of his game and doesn't let the fear of striking out keep him from swinging. This is a motto he applies both on and off the field, but Allie appears immune, seeming to view Luke as nothing more than caution tape on legs. He's a player, and in Allie's experience, they're all the same. She won't risk her job or her heart to another one, no matter how different this one claims to be. But as Allie gets to know him, she discovers the number eleven the public thinks they know is very different from the real Luke Archer. He seems too good to be true. And maybe he is. Allie will have to confront the stories attached to a player of Luke Archer's stature and decide who she'll put her faith in-The man she's falling for? Or the rumors?

Book excerpt: Twelve-year-old Ann Maria Weems works from sunup to sundown, wraps rags around her feet in the winter, and must do whatever her master or mistress orders--but she has something that many plantation slaves don't have. She has her wonderful family around her. To Ann, her teasing brothers, her older sister, and her protective and loving parents are everything. And then one day, they are gone. Separated from her family by her master and shipped off as a housemaid, Ann learns something about independence and about love before the opportunity for escape arrives. A white man risks his life for Ann, cuts her hair short, dresses her like a boy, and launches her on her journey on the Underground Railroad to Canada, her family, and finally to freedom. Until she was a teenager, Ann Maria Weems lived in the mid-1800s near the author's home in Maryland. This fictionalized account of her extraordinary life is ideal for students, teachers, and parents hungry for interesting and informative reading in African-American history and the Underground Railroad.
