Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the flow and heat transfer between co-rotating discs, and unifies the subject by means of physical insight and mathematical models, validated using experimental data. Many phenomena, unique to rotating flows, are explained, and empirical correlations and theoretical methods, suitable for design purposes, are presented. Data is provided within the book for validating CFD codes which are being increasingly used to compute the flow in rotating-disc systems. Since the publication of Volume 1 in 1989, there has been an increasing interest in rotating disc systems, mainly from research workers and engine designers concerned with understanding and computing the complex flow and heat transfer that occur inside the internal cooling-systems of gas-turbine engines. This book should be of interest to them as it may assist them in making more efficient use of cooling air systems, resulting in both economic and environmental benefits.

Book excerpt: The book is devoted to investigation of a series of problems of convective heat and mass transfer in rotating-disk systems. Such systems are widespread in scienti?c and engineering applications. As examples from the practical area, one can mention gas turbine and computer engineering, disk brakes of automobiles, rotating-disk air cleaners, systems of microclimate, extractors, dispensers of liquids, evaporators, c- cular saws, medical equipment, food process engineering, etc. Among the scienti?c applications, it is necessary to point out rotating-disk electrodes used for experim- tal determination of the diffusion coef?cient in electrolytes. The system consisting of a ?xed disk and a rotating cone that touches the disk by its vertex is widely used for measurement of the viscosity coef?cient of liquids. For time being, large volume of experimental and computational data on par- eters of ?uid ?ow, heat and mass transfer in different types of rotating-disk systems have been accumulated, and different theoretical approaches to their simulation have been developed. This obviously causes a need of systematization and generalization of these data in a book form.

Book excerpt: "The governing equations of the transverse vibration of a spinning disk of varying thickness are derived and solved using numerical integration techniques. A clamped-free rotating annular disk driven at the outer edge with sinusoidally varying force is considered for analysis. Representative graphs showing the stress distribution and the frequency dependence of the force transmissibility of the disk are presented. Results obtained in this paper are compared as applicable to results of previous investigations."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents results of the analytical and numerical modeling of convective heat and mass transfer in different rotating flows caused by (i) system rotation, (ii) swirl flows due to swirl generators, and (iii) surface curvature in turns and bends. Volume forces (i.e. centrifugal and Coriolis forces), which influence the flow pattern, emerge in all of these rotating flows. The main part of this work deals with rotating flows caused by system rotation, which includes several rotating-disk configurations and straight pipes rotating about a parallel axis. Swirl flows are studied in some of the configurations mentioned above. Curvilinear flows are investigated in different geometries of two-pass ribbed and smooth channels with 180° bends. The author demonstrates that the complex phenomena of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotating flows can be successfully simulated using not only the universal CFD methodology, but in certain cases by means of the integral methods, self-similar and analytical solutions. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of heat and mass transfer.

We discuss What is the effect of stresses having variable thickness and with edge loading.Rotating Disc having variable thickness with rigid shaft, It has been observed that in the absence of thickness, rotating disc with inclusion and made of compressible material yields at the internal surface at a lesser angular speed as compared to a rotating disc made of incompressible material whereas it requires a higher percentage increase in angular speed to become fully plastic. With the effect of variation thickness, higher angular speed is required to yield at the internal surface. When Rotating disc by finitesimal deformation with loading edge under steady state temperature, It has observed that for incompressible material required higher angular speed for initial yielding as compare to compressible material. With the effect of loading edge, lesser angular speed required for initial yielding as compare to without edge loading. With the introduction of thermal effect rotating disc with loading edge much required to lesser angular speed as compare to rotating disc without thermal effect.

Book excerpt: Rotating Thermal Flows in Natural and Industrial Processes provides the reader with a systematic description of the different types of thermal convection and flow instabilities in rotating systems, as present in materials, crystal growth, thermal engineering, meteorology, oceanography, geophysics and astrophysics. It expressly shows how the isomorphism between small and large scale phenomena becomes beneficial to the definition and ensuing development of an integrated comprehensive framework. This allows the reader to understand and assimilate the underlying, quintessential mechanisms without requiring familiarity with specific literature on the subject. Topics treated in the first part of the book include: Thermogravitational convection in rotating fluids (from laminar to turbulent states); Stably stratified and unstratified shear flows; Barotropic and baroclinic instabilities; Rossby waves and Centrifugally-driven convection; Potential Vorticity, Quasi-Geostrophic Theory and related theorems; The dynamics of interacting vortices, interacting waves and mixed (hybrid) vortex-wave states; Geostrophic Turbulence and planetary patterns. The second part is entirely devoted to phenomena of practical interest, i.e. subjects relevant to the realms of industry and technology, among them: Surface-tension-driven convection in rotating fluids; Differential-rotation-driven (forced) flows; Crystal Growth from the melt of oxide or semiconductor materials; Directional solidification; Rotating Machinery; Flow control by Rotating magnetic fields; Angular Vibrations and Rocking motions; Covering a truly prodigious range of scales, from atmospheric and oceanic processes and fluid motion in "other solar-system bodies", to convection in its myriad manifestations in a variety of applications of technological relevance, this unifying text is an ideal reference for physicists and engineers, as well as an important resource for advanced students taking courses on the physics of fluids, fluid mechanics, thermal, mechanical and materials engineering, environmental phenomena, meteorology and geophysics.
