Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to develop a CarSim model of an ATV that could predict the cornering characteristic of the vehicle in certain steady-state maneuvers. The objectives of the research include measuring necessary parameters of the vehicle, building the model in CarSim using the measurements, and evaluate the model with field test results of ATVs. A subject ATV is tested on the Vehicle Inertia Measurement Facility (VIMF) and the Suspension Parameter Measurement Device (SPMD) for the mass, inertia, suspension kinematics and compliance of the vehicle. The test procedures, test results and the measured parameters are presented and analyzed. The model of the ATV is built in the CarSim based on the measurements of the vehicle. A simplified suspension model is developed to convert the SPMD compliance measurements into implementable vehicle parameters in CarSim. The procedure to apply vehicle mass, inertia and suspension kinematics data in the CarSim is also shown. The model is evaluated with the 50-feet radius circle test. The simulation results of the maneuver are compared with the field test results shown in a recent CPSC report on ATVs. Similar cornering characteristics are found in both results. This thesis is concluded by discussing the benefits of the ATV model in reducing the time and expense on ATV field tests. Future research that could improve the credibility and accuracy of this model is also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing suspension geometry design methods in unique detail, John Dixon shows how suspension properties such as bump steer, roll steer, bump camber, compliance steer and roll centres are analysed and controlled by the professional engineer. He emphasizes the physical understanding of suspension parameters in three dimensions and methods of their calculation, using examples, programs and discussion of computational problems. The analytical and design approach taken is a combination of qualitative explanation, for physical understanding, with algebraic analysis of linear and non-linear coefficients, and detailed discussion of computer simulations and related programming methods. Includes a detailed and comprehensive history of suspension and steering system design, fully illustrated with a wealth of diagrams Explains suspension characteristics and suspension geometry coefficients, providing a unique and in-depth understanding of suspension design not found elsewhere. Describes how to obtain desired coefficients and the limitations of particular suspension types, with essential information for suspension designers, chassis technicians and anyone else with an interest in suspension characteristics and vehicle dynamics. Discusses the use of computers in suspension geometry analysis, with programming techniques and examples of suspension solution, including advanced discussion of three-dimensional computational geometry applied to suspension design. Explains in detail the direct and iterative solutions of suspension geometry.

This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The light-duty vehicle fleet is expected to undergo substantial technological changes over the next several decades. New powertrain designs, alternative fuels, advanced materials and significant changes to the vehicle body are being driven by increasingly stringent fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission standards. By the end of the next decade, cars and light-duty trucks will be more fuel efficient, weigh less, emit less air pollutants, have more safety features, and will be more expensive to purchase relative to current vehicles. Though the gasoline-powered spark ignition engine will continue to be the dominant powertrain configuration even through 2030, such vehicles will be equipped with advanced technologies, materials, electronics and controls, and aerodynamics. And by 2030, the deployment of alternative methods to propel and fuel vehicles and alternative modes of transportation, including autonomous vehicles, will be well underway. What are these new technologies - how will they work, and will some technologies be more effective than others? Written to inform The United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards, this new report from the National Research Council is a technical evaluation of costs, benefits, and implementation issues of fuel reduction technologies for next-generation light-duty vehicles. Cost, Effectiveness, and Deployment of Fuel Economy Technologies for Light-Duty Vehicles estimates the cost, potential efficiency improvements, and barriers to commercial deployment of technologies that might be employed from 2020 to 2030. This report describes these promising technologies and makes recommendations for their inclusion on the list of technologies applicable for the 2017-2025 CAFE standards.

Book excerpt: In most forms of racing, cornering speed is the key to winning. On the street, precise and predictable handling is the key to high performance driving. However, the art and science of engineering a chassis can be difficult to comprehend, let alone apply. Chassis Engineering explains the complex principles of suspension geometry and chassis design in terms the novice can easily understand and apply to any project. Hundreds of photos and illustrations illustrate what it takes to design, build, and tune the ultimate chassis for maximum cornering power on and off the track.
