Book Synopsis Analysis and Optimization of Unsteady Flow Past a Circular Cylinder Using a Harmonic Balance Method by : Emily Buckman Clark

This book was released on 2013 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional laminar flow over a circular cylinder was investigated in this work. Three cases were considered in which the cylinder was either stationary, in constant rotation, or in periodic rotation. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of a rotating cylinder for lift enhancement, drag reduction, and the suppression of vortex shedding. The governing coupled nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a finite difference discretization and Newton's method. In this way, three flow solvers were developed for this research: a steady solver, an unsteady time-accurate solver, and an unsteady harmonic balance solver. The force coefficients were of prime interest in this study. Favorable results were obtained using rotation as an active control for the flow over the cylinder. The cylinder in constant rotation resulted in lift enhancement, drag reduction and vortex suppression for increasing rotational speeds. Lift enhancement and drag reduction were also noted for a rotationally oscillating cylinder. The trade-offs for these goals were discussed. Lastly, a finite difference sensitivity analysis was performed for a rotationally oscillating cylinder with the harmonic balance solver. The mean drag coefficient was taken as the objective function, and the Strouhal number was the investigated design variable. The goal was to use the sensitivity analysis to determine a forcing frequency, which minimized the mean drag coefficient. Two iterative techniques were investigated, but neither converged to a minimum drag coefficient with the harmonic balance solver. It was determined that a minimum drag coefficient occurs near the boundary between the lock-on and non lock-on regions or in the non lock-on region, where the harmonic balance solver does not converge.

Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures written by Jorgen Fredsoe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.

Book Synopsis Non-Newtonian Flow by : R. P. Chhabra
Download or read book Non-Newtonian Flow written by R. P. Chhabra and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-08-19 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Newtonian materials are encountered in virtually all of the chemical and process industries and a full understanding of their nature and flow characteristics is an essential requirement for engineers and scientists involved in their formulation and handling. This book will bridge the gap between much of the highly theoretical and mathematically complex work of the rheologist and the practical needs of those who have to design and operate plants in which these materials are handled and processed. At the same time, numerous references are included for the benefit of those who need to delve more deeply into the subject. The starting point for any work on non-newtonian fluids is their characterisation over the range of conditions to which they are likely to be subjected during manufacture or utilisation, and this topic is treated early on in the book in a chapter commissioned from an expert in the field of rheological measurements. Coverage of topics is extensive and this book offers a unique and rich selection of material including the flow of single phase and multiphase mixtures in pipes, in packed and fluidised bed systems, heat and mass transfer in boundary layers and in simple duct flows, and mixing etc.An important and novel feature of the book is the inclusion of a wide selection of worked examples to illustrate the methods of calculation. It also incorporates a large selection of problems for the reader to tackle himself.

Book Synopsis Bluff-Body Wakes, Dynamics and Instabilities by : Helmut Eckelmann
Download or read book Bluff-Body Wakes, Dynamics and Instabilities written by Helmut Eckelmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bluff-body wakes play an important role in many fluid dynamics problems and engineering applications. This book gives and up-to-date account of recent results obtained in the study of bluff-body wakes. Experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches are all comprehensively covered and compared. Topics of particular interest include hydrodynamic instability analyses, three-dimensional pattern formation problems, flow control methods, bifurcation analyses, numerical simulations and turbulence modelling. The main originality of thisvolume is that recent conceptual advances made to describe nonlinear phenomena in general are put to the test on a classical problem in fundamental fluid mechanics, namely the wake structure generated behind a bluff object.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Interactive Boundary Layer Theory by : Ian John Sobey
Download or read book Introduction to Interactive Boundary Layer Theory written by Ian John Sobey and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major achievements in fluid mechanics in the last quarter of the twentieth century has been the development of an asymptotic description of perturbations to boundary layers known generally as 'triple deck theory'. These developments have had a major impact on our understanding of laminar fluid flow, particularly laminar separation. It is also true that the theory rests on three quarters of a century of development of boundary layer theory which involves analysis, experimentation and computation. All these parts go together, and to understand the triple deck it is necessary to understand which problems the triple deck resolves and which computational techniques have been applied. This book presents a unified account of the development of laminar boundary layer theory as a historical study together with a description of the application of the ideas of triple deck theory to flow past a plate, to separation from a cylinder and to flow in channels. The book is intended to provide a graduate level teaching resource as well as a mathematically oriented account for a general reader in applied mathematics, engineering, physics or scientific computation.
