Book excerpt: Jason's going to have the summer of his life — as long as he doesn't lose Joe's place. Sixteen-year-old Jason is looking forward to spending the summer in the big city with his friends Don and Ferguson. They've convinced their parents to let them sublet Jason's older brother Joe's apartment in Toronto. All they have to do is pay the rent each month and not, under ANY circumstance, put Joe in jeopardy of losing his lease. Easier said than done. What they didn't count on was dealing with Joe's eccentric landlord, Mr. Plotnick, or his strange friend, Rootbeer. And they certainly weren't expecting Joe's Camaro to be mistaken for a stolen car and get towed away. One crisis after another conspires to ruin their summer, but with Gordon Korman's trademark wit the journey is guaranteed to be both inventive and hilarious.

She's shocked, however, when Joe agrees to help. Even though she doesn't love his terms, she accepts them because she'll get what she needs. If striking a deal with him means donning a pair of coveralls and swinging a hammer, so be it. Working side by side with Joe again, they might be able to repair the past. They just might get a second chance, too!

They’ve escorted patrons to their cars during the cocaine wars and sent trays of food from the kitchen to high profile patrons via Secret Service agents. They work at the second-highest grossing restaurant in the United States--one of the most coveted jobs in the business. They are the waiters of Joe’s Stone Crab, a one-of-a-kind South Florida landmark. Joe’s Stone Crab opened in Miami Beach in 1913 as a modest restaurant situated behind the apartment of owners Joe and Jennie Weiss. Miami Beach, not yet a city, could be accessed only by ferry. Stone crabs weren’t even on the menu. A lot has changed in the past century: Joe’s Stone Crab boasts locations in Chicago and Las Vegas, and people travel across the globe to dine on its signature stone crabs, a delicacy often mimicked but never matched by countless other restaurants. Throughout its history, Joe’s has never accepted reservations. The anticipation and camaraderie in waiting two to three hours for a table has become as much a part of the dining experience as the exquisite food. Along the way, Joe’s has gained a reputation for excellent service provided by its extremely dedicated, talented, and loyal wait staff. A chance to serve at Joe’s is one of the most sought-after jobs in the restaurant business. Staff members are paid extremely fair wages, compensated with retirement packages, and receive generous time off. It’s not unusual to encounter a waiter who has been at Joe’s for fifteen or twenty years. Some have stayed on for upward of thirty, forty, and even fifty. Bonds between coworkers are strong, and some are so proud of their home-away-from-home that some waiters even request to be buried in the front courtyard at Joe’s for all of eternity. By giving voice to these unsung individuals, Deeny Kaplan Lorber reveals the inner workings of Joe’s in this collection of fascinating, intimate vignettes. Go behind the scenes of a thriving business that treats both staff and customers like family. For one hundred years, Miami natives and tourists alike have waited and dined alongside celebrities including Frank Sinatra, Muhammad Ali, Dan Marino, and Jennifer Lopez. There’s no other place in the world quite like Joe’s Stone Crab; this is the story of the waiters, not the wait.

Book excerpt: An affecting memoir from one of America's most provocative humorists Over the past two decades, Joe Queenan has established himself as a scourge of everything that is half-baked, half-witted, and halfhearted in American culture. In Closing Time, Queenan turns his sights on a more serious and a more personal topic: his childhood in a Philadelphia housing project in the early 1960s. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Closing Time recounts Queenan's Irish Catholic upbringing in a family dominated by his erratic, alcoholic father, and his long flight away from the dismal confines of his neighborhood into the greater, wide world. A story about salvation and escape, Closing Time has at its heart the makings of a classic American autobiography.

The cozy comedy of Joe Pera meets the darkly playful illustrations of Joe Bennett in A Bathroom Book for People Not Pooping or Peeing But Using the Bathroom as an Escape, a funny, warm, and sincere guide to regaining calm and confidence when you're hiding in the bathroom. “Nothing says ‘class’ to your dinner guests more than a Joe Pera book next to the can.” —Seth Meyers Joe Pera goes to the bathroom a lot. And his friend, Joe Bennett, does too. They both have small bladders but more often it’s just to get a moment of quiet, a break from work, or because it’s the only way they know how to politely end conversations. So they created a functional meditative guide to help people who suffer from social anxiety and deal with it in this very particular way. Although, it’s a comedic book, the goal is to help these readers: 1. Relax 2. Recharge 3. Rejoin the world outside of the bathroom It’s also fun entertainment for people simply hiding in the bathroom to avoid doing work. A Bathroom Book for People Not Pooping or Peeing But Using the Bathroom as an Escape will be waiting in the bathroom like a beacon for anxious readers looking to feel calm, confident, and less alone. “Nothing says ‘class’ to your dinner guests more than a Joe Pera book next to the can.” —Seth Meyers “A beautiful and funny book about something I have done all my life. Book excerpt: Winner of the National Book Award • Washington Post Best Book of the Year • A New York Times Notable Book From one of the most revered novelists of our time, an exquisitely told story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family. One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked. The details of the crime are slow to surface because Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to relive or reveal what happened, either to the police or to her husband, Bazil, and thirteen-year-old son, Joe. In one day, Joe's life is irrevocably transformed. He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into an abyss of solitude. Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill prepared. While his father, a tribal judge, endeavors to wrest justice from a situation that defies his efforts, Joe becomes frustrated with the official investigation and sets out with his trusted friends, Cappy, Zack, and Angus, to get some answers of his own. Their quest takes them first to the Round House, a sacred space and place of worship for the Ojibwe. And this is only the beginning. The Round House is a page-turning masterpiece—at once a powerful coming-of-age story, a mystery, and a tender, moving novel of family, history, and culture.

Book excerpt: A USA Today bestseller and book club favorite! College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran--and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home, after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder. As Joe writes about Carl's life, especially Carl's valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Joe, along with his skeptical female neighbor, throws himself into uncovering the truth, but he is hamstrung in his efforts by having to deal with his dangerously dysfunctional mother, the guilt of leaving his autistic brother vulnerable, and a haunting childhood memory. Thread by thread, Joe unravels the tapestry of Carl’s conviction. But as he and Lila dig deeper into the circumstances of the crime, the stakes grow higher. Will Joe discover the truth before it’s too late to escape the fallout?

Book excerpt: Living Outside the Box is a call to action beyond the cliche' of thinking outside the box that typically ends without and action being taken. To change the world takes fearless actions and this book is the guide to how to live your life and change the world for the better. The concept for this book originated with frustrations of a career of seeing corporate executives, boards of directors, politicians, commissions, committees, and nearly every gathering of people for the purpose of seeking solutions to problems culminate in absolutely nothing. The watershed moment when the term "Living Outside the Box" was coined came during my time as the CEO of the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville when some very specific challenges called for new solutions. Another meeting was about to be scheduled by some members of the executive committee to "think outside the box." My frustrations boiled over at the thought of yet another meeting where the foregone conclusion was that good thoughts would be developed and nothing would be done about them. From my mouth came the words "what good is it to think outside of the box unless we have the courage live outside the box." The room went silent. I did not know if I was about to be fired or if my words had struck a nerve, but the meeting to think outside the box was not scheduled at that moment. Afterward, one of the attendees who represented the University of Southern Indiana came into my office and expressed the opinion that what I had stated was in his opinion quite profound. His role at USI had been to act as a facilitator to help businesses, municipalities, and non-profit agencies engage in outside the box thinking exercises with hopes that planning and actions would come from the exercises. He also expressed many examples of frustrations with the results of his facilitation sessions where little or nothing actually got done. He was so enamored with the phrase "Living Outside the Box" that he did some research to find out if this phrase had been used in the context of a call to action following facilitated sessions of "Thinking Outside the Box." Much to the surprise of both of us, it had not.He began encouraging me to pursue publishing and speaking engagements around the phrase "Living Outside the Box." That was the summer of 2009. It is now 2018 but the phrase and its call to action has never left my mind or my way of living. I work the phrase into every speech that I make whether it is to the Palm Desert Rotary Club, the annual CVEP Economic Summit, or as the keynote at the Chief Innovation Officers Summit in San Francisco. The words "Living Outside the Box" always make an impact and I hope it will make one on the readers of this book. As you will see, it is those who take actions that really change the world. Words inspire, perspectives provoke thoughts but it is only through deliberate actions that progress is made to positively impact the human condition and thus change the world.

Book excerpt: The Man Who Came and Went, a novel of the new west, is a magically realistic story for the modern era that will tease your understanding and beliefs, and draw you into the mysteries of the universe, from the brilliant mind of Joe Stillman, acclaimed Academy Award nominated co-writer of “Shrek.” Fifteen-year-old Belutha Mariah, our storyteller, is the oldest of three kids from three different fathers. Her life’s goal is to keep her dysfunctional mom, Maybell, from procreating yet again and then to leave the coffin-sized town of Hadley, Arizona the second she graduates high school. Along comes the new grill cook at Maybell’s Diner, Bill Bill, a mysterious drifter with the ability to mind-read orders. As word spreads in Hadley and beyond, the curious and desperate pour into this small desert town to eat at Maybell's. Some believe Bill knows the secrets of the universe. Belutha figures he’s probably nuts. But his cooking starts to transform the lives of locals and visitors, and Belutha finds her angry heart opening, as Bill begins to show her the porous boundary between this life and what comes after. In a normal American town, something new and strange, and yet achingly familiar, begins to unfold.
