Book excerpt: The undeniable history of mankind clearly shows us that human conflict has far from passed. In places like Kuwait, Rwanda, Bosnia and Kosovo, the 20th Century ended brutally. Given the trends of modern conflict, the economic separation of peoples, the rise in religious affiliated terrorism, and the social hatreds that remain between races, tomorrow's wars can only be more violent than those of the past. The X-MAS War is really an anthology of four books: Black Rain For Christmas, The Secret War In South Asia, Sixth Fleet Under, and The Sugar-Sweet Smell of Fear. All four have overlapping storylines. They're tales are all told through the use of news reports, traditional narratives, diary entries, and letters home. Each book is a complete story by itself, but together they give a brand new perspective to the unique aspects of 21st Century warfare!

Book excerpt: In 21st-century America's future, the American dream borders on extinction. Propped up by massive debt, the economy produces no real goods. The rest of the world starves while America stockpiles food. Large cities thrive, but infrastructure crumbles in less populated areas. The government teeters on the brink of insolvency as it mortgages America's posterity. Like many citizens, cynical ad executive Mark Reardon is too busy to notice the country's decline. Working 100-hour weeks directing ad campaigns for multi-national corporations, Mark has neither the time nor the inclination to take on small clients. Hence, when a religious fringe group, The Society for Truth, comes seeking representation, Mark only meets with them reluctantly. However, he is stunned when offered a $3 billion contract to warn the world of impending disaster. Quickly forgetting his reservations, Mark accepts the deal, but soon finds things are not as they seem. Before he realizes his peril, Mark's family is missing, his Society contact is dead, and he is in the hands of an ever-watching and all-encompassing enemy known only as The Company. Fighting to escape and locate his wife and daughter, Mark is pursued by clones, betrayed by friends, and tormented by prophetic visions. Not knowing who to trust, Mark bounces between The Company and The Society, eventually facing his past and embracing his destiny as God's final prophet preceding the coming judgment. "Cry for Tomorrow" is an apocalyptic thriller highlighting the economic and technological factors contributing to societal collapse. While portraying mankind's inability to save himself and his world, the novel explores the dichotomy of spirituality and materialism and the conflict these values create for Mark Reardon and his family. In this time of uncertainty, "Cry for Tomorrow" points readers toward an eternal and unchanging hope.

It emphasizes the importance of recording the sound properly on the set and also explains the post-production audio process as a creative collaboration that enhances the story and is not merely a “fix” for various audio problems. This book guides readers through a series of exercises to better understand the relationships between the gear and practices required for optimal recordings and mixes. Rather than merely explain the concepts of sound wave propagation, the electronics of how sound is recorded, or the acoustics of sound reverberation in spaces, these exercises are designed to demonstrate and reinforce these crucial ideas. This systematic approach from simple recording through sound editing and mixing gives aspiring sound technicians valuable hands/ears-on experience so they can achieve the same professional quality as those working in the industry!

Book excerpt: In the Beginning was the world, and the world was with Comic Books, and the world was Comic Books. Before everything, came the Celeste Teals, a race of heavenly ducks. They got quacking and Hollywood was in balance until an unnatural species of predator emerged from deep pockets to feed on intelligent life. They were known as Sequels. To restore natural order, where original stories got fair dues, Harsh 'Em, the Duck of Headinass, sent Urinals, immoral heroes from the planet Limp Year, to flush away the Sequels. They were: Saucy, Icrush, Conga, Seven Up, Festus, Sailfish, Droog, Gila Nomster, Ejaculus Prime, and Ngelina. When their moment came, the Golden Snitch appeared, and entered Ejac, the lead Urinal. "What is that song I hear?" asked a voice in her head. It was the fourth track from side one of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album, back when albums really were albums, and Ejac answered, "It is Time." And off we go on one more adult-oriented insane romp through another crazed super-heroic movie. General Surgeons have advised people not to read this for their own mental health. Book excerpt: It's the Cowboy Way! tells the full story of the amazing true adventures of group members Ranger Doug, Woody Paul, Too Slim, and Joey "The CowPolka King" for the first time, from their first gigs at "Herr Harry's Phranks 'N' Steins," in Nashville, to their rise to the top of the Grammy heap. Since 1977, Riders In The Sky has faithfully tended a musical tradition kindled by singing cowboy legends, such as Gene Autry and the Sons Of The Pioneers. Throughout its long career, the group has branded the genre with its own mark, crafting a well-balanced mix of both classic and original western songs—smooth harmony, hot licks, and comedy. Over the past quarter of a century, and more than 4,500 shows, 290 national TV appearances, 203 public radio shows, nearly 700 Grand Ole Opry appearances, 2.3 million miles on the road, two Grammy Awards, three television series, and 31 albums down the trail, a group that began with a commitment to carry on an American musical tradition has itself become a national treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on a particular type of formulaic expressions called Situation-Bound Utterances (SBUs). Since the meaning of these pragmatic units is shaped by the interplay of linguistic and extralinguistic factors they can be best accounted for in a theoretical framework which represents a knowledge-for-use conception. A unique feature of the book is that it examines the development and use of a particular type of formulae from new perspectives. The comparison of a monolingual and multilingual approach, and the application of the graded salience hypothesis to SBUs within a cognitive-pragmatic theoretical framework reveal that issues such as the role of context in shaping situational meaning, and the existence of common or similar cognitive mechanisms and knowledge structures responsible for cognitive functions and speech behavior in different languages need revision. As a consequence, the book seeks answer to two main questions: 1) origin and extent of context-sensitiveness, and 2) the development of the particular situational functions of SBUs. On the basis of recent research it is argued that context affects comprehension only after highly salient information has been accessed. Search for the appropriate meaning stops if the information accessed initially is compatible with the context, and it continues, if it is not. This approach puts the issue of context-sensitiveness of SBUs into an entirely different perspective. It is also discussed that why exactly these utterances started to be used to express those pragmatic functions and not others. SBUs demonstrate better than any other linguistic unit that there is a strong cognitive-linguistic interdependency. The development of certain SBUs can be accounted for through cognitive mechanisms, and vice versa: learning an SBU for a culturally important category can linguistically reinforce the learning of the category itself. The book uses a cross-linguistic perspective and illustrative examples from several languages which makes its arguments and claims convincing.
