Book Synopsis International Law in a Divided World by : Antonio Cassese
Download or read book International Law in a Divided World written by Antonio Cassese and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This general introduction to international law considers the topic in a political and historical perspective. Throughout, an effort is made to identify the ideological and political motivation underlying international legal rules and institutions, which are examined through the prism of the principal actors in the international community: Western, socialist and developing countries. This book differs from standard textbooks in an important respect: it covers some topics neglected bytraditional works, such as the historical evolution of the international community or the law of economic relations and of development, while some traditional topics are dealt with only tangentially, such as international arbitration. The book will thus appeal to lawyers who wish to explore the background and context to this subject and to political scientists who want to know more about the policy pursued by each of the three major groupings of States in international law-making. This replaces the hardback, published in 1986.

Book Synopsis Inventing the Universe by : Luc Brisson
Download or read book Inventing the Universe written by Luc Brisson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1995-07-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A parallel investigation of both Plato's Timaeusand the contemporary standard Big Bang model of the universe shows that any possible scientific knowledge of the universe is ultimately grounded in irreducible and undemonstrable propositions. These are inventions of the human mind. The scientific knowledge of the universe is entirely composed in a series of axioms and rules of inference underlying a formalized system. There is no logical relationship between the sensible perception of a world of becoming and the formalized system of axioms known as a "scientific explanation." The "irrational gap" between perception and explanation can be appraised historically and identified in three stages: Plato's Timaeus furnishes the first example of a scientific theory dealing with a realm of ideality that cannot be derived from immediate sensible perception; the Big Bang model is constituted on the basis of the purely geometrical notion of symmetry; and in the more recent Algorithmic Theory of Information, the analysis of the purely symbolic language expressing physical reality reveals the level of complexity of any given theory formulated in this language. The result is that the probability of the universe actually conforming with simple mathematics is zero. In a formal system, a theorem contains more information than can be found in the set of axioms of this system, and it remains undecidable. In Aristotle' s language, the theorems that can be proved within a theoretical model are already potentially contained in the system of axioms underlying these theorems.
Book Synopsis Arms, Armies and Fortifications in the Hundred Years War by : Anne Curry
Download or read book Arms, Armies and Fortifications in the Hundred Years War written by Anne Curry and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Careful, original and wide-ranging study of many different aspects of late medieval military history.' HISTORY The Hundred Years War embraced warfare in all aspects, from the grand set pieces of Crecy and Agincourt to the pillaged lands of the dispossessed population. What makes this book different from previous studies emphasising the great battles is its use of less familiar evidence, such as administrative records and landscape archaeology, to gain a truer picture of the realities of medieval warfare. From a general review of battle tactics, the book turns to examine (at points enlisting computer analysis) a number of issues: the composition of the English army, the management of affairs in Aquitaine, the response in England at large to the war and the consequent propaganda and hardship, and the impact of warfare on local communities. Close study of surviving artefacts - weapons, fortifications - also allows realistic assessments of military and naval experiences.
