Download or read book Forest Health written by John L. Innes and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the current state of knowledge about forest declines, particularly as they relate to air pollution. Many declines are shown to be unrelated to air pollution and, in other cases, the links between air pollution and the condition of the trees is extremely tenuous. Factors such as nutrient depletion due to past management practices and drought are shown to have had a major influence on the health of trees. In many cases, the evidence for a decline in tree condition is at best ambiguous, and much of the concern appears to have been generated by political and media interest rather than by a critical evaluation of the available data. A detailed examination of the comprehensive data collected in the British forest health monitoring program over the last five years indicates the complexity of the process involved and illustrates the dangers of taking data from a single year at face value. Many of the indices used to assess trees are of questionable value when compared over time or space, as their subjective nature precludes any reliable comparisons. Studies of annual increment and wood quality indicate that the international market for timber is unlikely to be affected in either the long or the short term.
Book Synopsis Effects of Acid Deposition on the Forests of Europe and North America by : George H. Tomlinson, II
Download or read book Effects of Acid Deposition on the Forests of Europe and North America written by George H. Tomlinson, II and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-04-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to outline the serious dangers to the soil and forest as a result of continuing emissions of acid-producing gases, thus pointing to the urgent need of their reduction. This volume reviews relevant information dealing with changes due to acidification of the soil and with the physiological processes of the tree involved in nutrient uptake, transfer, and utilization as well as with the nature and degree of damage that has occurred. Written in a comprehensive format, it discusses the importance of viable forests, the vital role of nutrients in the structure and physiology of the tree, and the relevance of prior dieback episodes. This is a valuable resource for those interested in forestry, environmental science, and the pulp and paper industry.

Book Synopsis Acid Deposition by : James W.S. Longhurst
Download or read book Acid Deposition written by James W.S. Longhurst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of acid deposition remains one of the most urgent of our contemporary environmental problems. Research programmes are continually redefming our understanding of cause and effect and hence the continuing need for a timely and authoritative series addressing these issues. This volume seeks to review and defme our contemporary understanding of acid deposition by reference to new international data and as a consequence assist the definition of our future research requirements and policy developments. International contributions to the volume are drawn from the Federal Republic of Germany, the U.S.A., Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, Austria, Israel, France and the United Kingdom. Some of these nations have experienced acid deposition on a regional scale for considerable periods of time; for others the phenomenon is an emerging problem. This collection of papers has been compiled by invitation to eminent members of the acid deposition research community and by selection from a carefully targeted call for papers. It is primarily designed to meet the needs of researchers, lecturers and postgraduate students in environmental disciplines and for environmental policy makers. It is of interest to professionals in related disciplines and essential as a reference text for libraries. The volume is divided into four broad themes: Emissions, chemistry and deposition; Ecosystem effects (freshwater, soils and forest systems); Effects on structural materials; Mitigation, control and management. Each of these sections provides an overview of contemporary understanding, presents new experimental or field evidence and provides guidance for our future research agenda.
Book Synopsis Magnesium Deficiency in Forest Ecosystems by : Reinhard F. Hüttl
Download or read book Magnesium Deficiency in Forest Ecosystems written by Reinhard F. Hüttl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. F. HUTTL AND W. SCHAAF Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus, Chair of Soil Protection and Recultivation, P.O. Box 10 13 44, 03013 Cottbus, Germany The health status of forest trees and stands is determined by numerous site factors such as chemical, physical, and biological soil factors, water supply, climate, weather conditions, management history as well as atmospheric deposition impacts. In this context, the nutrient supply is an important evaluation parameter. Forest trees well supplied with nutrients are more resistant to stresses that affect the forest ecosystem than other trees. This is true for both biotic and abiotic influences. Therefore the investigation of the so-called 'new type forest damage' was aimed at the exact determination of the health status of damaged trees. When considering the complete forest ecosystem, health (=vitality) means the sustainable ability to withstand negative environmental influences and still remain stable and productive. From this viewpoint, an optimal nutritional status is a prerequisite for an optimal health status. The term 'new type forest damage' comprises a number of damage symptoms which have been observed in various tree species on very different sites since the mid-1970s, particularly in Europe and North America. However, they occurred much more intensively in the 1980s. Generally, this forest damage was thought to be related to negative impacts of air pollutants.

Book Synopsis Stable Isotopes in Plant Nutrition, Soil Fertility and Environmental Studies by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Stable Isotopes in Plant Nutrition, Soil Fertility and Environmental Studies written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium jointly organized by the IAEA and FAO, Vienna, 1-5 October 1990. The objective of the symposium was to evaluate progress in the use of stable isotopes to examine various aspects of soil fertility and plant nutrition and some environmental problems, the potential and limitations of existing methods, and possibilities for further development. The meeting focused on the site level rather than the landscape level and, more specifically, on soil-plant relations, although landscape environmental aspects were also examined. The underlying theme was an assessment of current and possible future approaches to two problems of concern: how to increase or sustain productivity with minimum inputs, and how to limit environmental damage due to inappropriate land management and to industry.

Book Synopsis Plant Ecology by : Ernst-Detlef Schulze
Download or read book Plant Ecology written by Ernst-Detlef Schulze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-02-18 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook covers Plant Ecology from the molecular to the global level. It covers the following areas in unprecedented breadth and depth: - Molecular ecophysiology (stress physiology: light, temperature, oxygen deficiency, drought, salt, heavy metals, xenobiotica and biotic stress factors) - Autecology (whole plant ecology: thermal balance, water, nutrient, carbon relations) - Ecosystem ecology (plants as part of ecosystems, element cycles, biodiversity) - Synecology (development of vegetation in time and space, interactions between vegetation and the abiotic and biotic environment) - Global aspects of plant ecology (global change, global biogeochemical cycles, land use, international conventions, socio-economic interactions) The book is carefully structured and well written: complex issues are elegantly presented and easily understandable. It contains more than 500 photographs and drawings, mostly in colour, illustrating the fascinating subject. The book is primarily aimed at graduate students of biology but will also be of interest to post-graduate students and researchers in botany, geosciences and landscape ecology. Further, it provides a sound basis for those dealing with agriculture, forestry, land use, and landscape management.
