Book excerpt: Drooping trillium or Trillium flexipes is a herbaceous, early spring ephemeral and perennial of rich, deciduous forests usually associated with watercourses. It is found in 23 US states, but in Canada there are only two extant populations in Middlesex and Elgin counties, southern Ontario. This report describes the species and reviews its geographic distribution, biological and economic significance, general environment and habitat characteristics, population biology and ecology, land ownership and management responsibility, and management practices and experience. Factors limiting the survival and spread of the species are discussed and the current status of protection of the species is reviewed. Finally, the current status of the species is assessed along with its future prognosis, and a conservation status ranking as an endangered species is recommended.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the oft-overlooked herbaceous layer of eastern forests, this volume combines perspectives from different levels of biological organization (ecophysiology to ecosystems) and forest types (from the eastern boreal forest to southeastern pine forests) into a synthesis of our knowledge of the ecology of this important forest layer. This is the first book of its kind to synthesize information concerning herbaceous layer structure, composition, and dynamics of a variety of forest ecosystem types in eastern North America. With over 1,200 references cited in the 14 chapters, this book represents the most comprehensive review of literature on the ecology of the herbaceous layer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here you will find a wealth of information on the fauna, flora, and natural wonders of the Kawarthas. The Kawarthas sit astride the Canadian Shield and fertile lands to the south. This is cottage country a place where people are closer to nature and where children and adults remark on the sightings of animals, birds, and butterflies from windows and lakeside chairs and ask questions about what they see. This book is a valuable asset and will answer many of these questions. It offers an alternative to a shelf of field guides and deals with what can be expected in a relatively small but uniquely rich environment close to home. Nature in the Kawarthas presents a wealth of information about the birds, mammals, insects, flowers, reptiles, and amphibians that inhabit this special area. It discusses rare habitats and the behaviours of animals ranging from frogs to birds of prey. A Places to Go section recommends the best areas to visit to explore the natural wonders of this amazing region and its treasure of wild biodiversity. It is a true layman’s guide to nature in the Kawarthas. The Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN) is a registered charity and active club in Peterborough, Ontario, that dates back to 1940. The authors include knowledgeable naturalists, teachers, and university and ministry professionals in a wide variety of wildlife fields. Their goal is to know, appreciate, and conserve nature in all its forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated guide identifies nearly 300 common plants in Indiana's most prominent ecosystem—the Eastern Deciduous Forest. For ease of identification, the plants are arranged by flower color or growth form, providing a convenient way to distinguish a great majority of plants in any given woodland. Generous treatment is given to all major vascular plant groups of the forest, such as wildflowers, ferns, shrubs, trees, grasses, and sedges. Michael A. Homoya not only helps with identification, but also offers information on a plant's habitat, flowering period, familial relationships, biology, and connections to Indiana. For the garden enthusiast and habitat restorer, there is a section on landscaping and natural community restoration using native forest plants. A portion of the proceeds from each sale of this book go to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources for land protection and stewardship.
