Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is presented of the status of the Department of Defense Refractory Metals SheetRolling Program to accelerate the development of production techniques for high-quality, consistent sheet products from the refractory metals (Nb, Mo, Ta, and W) and their alloys. The program includes: (1) development of sheet production techniques, (2) establishment of minimum data re uired to evaluate mill production, (3) evaluation of fabrication characteristics of the sheet produced, and (4) establishment of design data. Contracts were awarded for the development of sheet production techniques for all four refractory metals. One contract was awarded for the evaluation of Mo alloy sheet fabrication characteristics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the third of a series which will periodically summarize the status of the various contracts involved in the Department of Defense Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Program. Under this program, selected candidate materials are being carried through one or more of the following consecutive phases: Phase I, development of a sheet-production practice; Phase II, establishment of minimum design data; and Phase III, evaluation of sheetfabrication characteristics. To the present time, 13 contracts have been funded or planned in support of the Phase I, II, and III activities. This report summarizes the status of each of these individual contracts as of November 1, 1964. The first section describes the overall program of the Department of Defense Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Program. Following, in the order of their discussions, are sections dealing with fabricable molybdenum alloys, unalloyed tungsten, columbium alloys, and tantalum alloys. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Nb program is nearing completion of laboratory tory rolling studiory materials, *Heat resistant alloys, *Sheets, Niobium alloys, Molybdenum alloys, Tantalum alloys, Tungsten alloys, Titanium alloys, Zirconium alloys, Tungsten, Powder metallurgy, Electric arcs, Manufacturing methods, Mechanical proper ies, Forging, Heat treatment, Melting, Extrusion, Deformation, Hardness, Rolling mills, Processing. Identifiers: Floturning. The Nb program is nearing completion of laboratory tory rolling studies, and a single composition for larger scale rolling studies will be selected in the near future. In the Mo program, it has been shown that true hot forging of billets to sheet bar results in higher recrystallization temperatures of TZM and Mo-0.5Ti sheet than are obtained when normal forging temperatures are used. The Ta program is in the early stages of ingot production and primary breakdown fabrication of the Ta-30Nb-7.5V alloy. Three methods of fabricating W sheet are being investigated: rolling of powder-metallurgy billets, fabrication of arc-melted ingots, and floturning of cylindrical blanks. Properties obtained on both powdermetallurgy and arc-melted tungsten sheet compare very favorably. Evaluation of the formability of Mo-alloy sheet has been delayed until sheet is available from the production program. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report supplements DMIC Report 152 which is a compilation of binary and ternary phase diagrams of columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten. Forty new binary and 80 new ternary diagrams are included, some of these being revised versions of the previously published diagrams. Included with each binary diagram and with some ternary diagrams is a short discussion listing terminal solubilities and crystal struc tures of intermediate pahses. Many of the diagrams are tentative and are subject to revision as additional data become available. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 3, 1963, a symposium was sponsored by the Bureau of Naval Weapons, Metalworking Processes and Equipment Program, on the application of high pressure in metal-deformation processing. Past research has shown that superimposed hydrostatic pressure can significantly increase the ductility at fracture of various materials. These observations have stimulated considerable interest in applying this hydrostatic-pressure effect to metal deformation processing, where it was anticipated that improved ductility and fabricability of brittle materials could be realized. Hydrostatic extrusion and hydrodynamic compressive forging were two such fabrication techniques discussed at the symposium, and preliminary results were found to be encouraging. Another fabrication process that will be investigated in the near future is sheet drawing, where the effect of superimposed pressure improves the ductility to fracture, it was noted that pressure cycling did not improve either the strength or ductility of steels containing various amounts of carbon. In addition to the mechanical-property effects, hydrostatic pressure has been found to affect measurably, numerous metallurgical properties of metals and alloys. (Author).
