Download or read book Dementia written by Susan Hunter and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a focus for academic and professional study, dementia has moved rapidly from the margin to the mainstream during the last decade. Understanding of this distressing condition, its aetiology and recognition, has become much more widespread and sophisticated. Building on such clinical knowledge, this book challenges the reader - to think ethically and in a person-centred way about the implications of dementia at a personal, planning and service provision level - to consider consumer perspectives, not only those of carers but also the much neglected views of individuals with dementia - to explore less well documented areas such as dementia and Down's Syndrome, depression and early onset dementia. In conclusion, the book illuminates selected topical developments in service provision such as community care, advocacy and aspects of the built and social care environment.

Book Synopsis The Social Basis of Community Care (Routledge Revivals) by : Martin Bulmer
Download or read book The Social Basis of Community Care (Routledge Revivals) written by Martin Bulmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Care for the elderly, disabled and mentally-ill within and by the community forms a vital part of current social policy. Martin Bulmer argues that this policy is inadequately thought out and rests on a series of poorly founded sociological assumptions. As a result there is a vacuum at the heart of government’s social care policy which is likely to lead to ineffective or deteriorating provision for those in need. This book, first published in 1987, will be essential reading for all those concerned with the organization and delivery of social care, whether as students, practitioners or teachers. It will be particularly useful for courses dealing with social policy, the personal social services and the social context of social work.

Book Synopsis Voluntary Agencies in the Welfare State by : Ralph M. Kramer
Download or read book Voluntary Agencies in the Welfare State written by Ralph M. Kramer and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of the welfare state threatens the autonomy and survival of nonprofit voluntary agencies as providers of social services. Or does it? In this cross-national, empirical study of the workings of voluntary agencies, Ralph M. Kramer cuts through the conceptual confusion surrounding voluntarism and the boundaries between the public and private sectors. He draws on a survey of voluntary agencies helping disabled people in four welfare democracies (the United States, England, Israel, and the Netherlands) to explain the virtues and flaws of different patterns of government-voluntary relationships in coping with the growing demand for human services. Kramer concludes that many of the most cherished beliefs about the voluntary sector have little basis in fact. The most innovative agencies, for example, are not the smallest, but rather among the largest, most bureaucratized, and most professionalized. Government funding does not necessarily constrain agency autonomy. And giving voluntary agencies the primary responsibility for social services can reduce, not increase, citizen participation. This comparative analysis of the distinctive competence, vulnerability, and potential of the voluntary agency should replace some of the myths that guide public policy and the day-to-day activities of social service agencies. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1981.
