Book Synopsis Training the Excluded for Work by : Marjorie Griffin Cohen
Download or read book Training the Excluded for Work written by Marjorie Griffin Cohen and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years job training programs have suffered severe funding cuts and the focus of training programs has shifted to meet the directives of funders rather than the needs of the community. How do these changes to job training affect disadvantaged workers and the unemployed? In an insightful and comprehensive discussion of job education in Canada, Cohen and her contributors pool findings from a five-year collaborative study of training programs. Good training programs, they argue, are essential in providing people who are chronically disadvantaged in the workplace with tools to acquire more secure, better-paying jobs. In the ongoing shift toward a neo-liberal economic model, government policies have engendered a growing reliance on private and market-based training schemes. These new training policies have undermined equity. In an attempt to redress social inequities in the workplace, the authors examine various kinds of training programs and recommend specific policy initiatives to improve access to these programs. This book will be of interest to policymakers, academics, and students interested in policy, work, equity, gender and education.

Book Synopsis Iowa Women's Corrections: A History by : Erica Spiller
Download or read book Iowa Women's Corrections: A History written by Erica Spiller and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iowa began building its first prison before achieving statehood, and women were sentenced to penitentiaries prior to the establishment of plans for their own housing. Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, incarcerated women transitioned through a series of institutions and confinement environments, often as the result of persistent overcrowding, underfunding, discriminatory laws or practices or to make room for incarcerated men. Early in Iowa's correctional history, women disproportionately served time for crimes considered to be against public decency, such as prostitution, lewdness and incorrigibility. Over time, their conditions and crimes evolved, but incarcerated women continually faced obstacles, such as access to treatment and programming, adequate facilities and opportunities for reentry and reform. Author Erica Spiller dives deep into this intriguing history.

Book Synopsis Faculty of Nursing on the Move by : Geertje Boschma
Download or read book Faculty of Nursing on the Move written by Geertje Boschma and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a historical analysis of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary in contrast and comparison to the broader evolution of academic nursing in Canada. It addresses how the faculty has responded to important social trends and changes in health care policy and helps the reader to understand contemporary nursing issues. Starting with the dramatic changes in health care policy after the Second World War, it establishes the role of nursing education as pivotal to a growing health care industry. The book then moves on to describe the challenge of developing an identity for an academic unit within the larger academic and health care structure. This book will be of particular interest to anyone involved in women's studies as it represents a case study for broader women's issues within an academic environment.
Download or read book A New Season written by Brian Porto and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-08-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how colleges might retain threatened varsity programs and expand sports opportunities for women students if they replaced the current commercial model with one that emphasizes student participation. This would benefit the college students who play varsity sports, instead of benefiting the coaches, athletic directors, or over-generous boosters who dominate many programs. In Title IX, the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education, schools have been handed a golden opportunity to bring fiscal sanity and academic integrity back to their campuses by once again making students, and not money, the focal point of athletic policies. This book demonstrates how colleges might retain threatened varsity programs and expand sports opportunities for women students if they replace the current commercial model with one that emphasizes student participation. This would benefit the college students who play varsity sports, instead of benefiting the coaches, athletic directors, or over-generous boosters who dominate many programs. Reformist tinkering has done little to solve the deep-seated problems plaguing college sports. Porto argues that replacing the enormous commercial pressures corrupting college sports with a student-oriented participation model can solve these problems. Fiscal sanity, academic integrity, personal responsibility, and gender equity in college sports are possible. Faculty members can lead a broader movement to reclaim their institutions from the college sports industry. This book shows how college sports may once again be the integral part of the educational program the NCAA advertises them to be—and that they should be.
