A statistical study revealed that solar cosmic rays occur in a nonrandom fashion in the proximity of the earth. These solar cosmic ray events show a tendency to occur in sequences and to occur more frequently in spring and fall. These results are inferred from data pertaining to geomagnetic storms having intensities exceeding a certain threshold. This threshold was chosen to provide the best correlation with direct indicators of solar cosmic rays such as riometry and high-altitude balloon measurements. The desirability of using geomagnetic data for statistical analysis li s, of course, in such data being available over many years. (Author).

Book excerpt: It turned out to be really a rare and happy occasion that we know exact1y when and how a new branch of space physics was born, namely, a physics of solar cosmic rays. It happened on February 28 and March 7, 1942 when the fIrst "cosmic ray bursts" were recorded on the Earth, and the Sun was unambiguously identifIed for the fIrst time as the source of high-velocity 10 particles with energies up to > 10 eV. Just due to such a high energy these relativistic particles have been called "solar cosmic rays" (SCR), in distinction from the "true" cosmic rays of galactic origin. Between 1942 and the beginning ofthe space era in 1957 only extremely high energy solar particle events could be occasionally recorded by cosmic ray ground-Ievel detectors and balloon borne sensors. Since then the detection techniques varied considerably and the study of SCR turned into essential part of solar and solar-terrestrial physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space Radiation Biology and Related Topics provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of space radiation biology. This book discusses space radiation hazards as well as the importance of natural radiations in the processes of biogenesis. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of radiobiology. This text then discusses the theoretical treatments of the chronic radiation response and the applicability of some of its features in extended manned space missions. Other chapters review the literature on models for recovery from radiation damage to some cellular systems. This book discusses as well the effects of radiations on mammals, with emphasis on those effects pertinent to the space-flight situation. The final chapter deals with the safety of nuclear power in space and explains the three types of nuclear devices designed for power production in space. This book is a valuable resource for radiologists, radiobiologists, and radiotherapists.

Book Synopsis Low-energy Solar Cosmic Rays and the Geomagnetic Storm of May 12, 1959 by : J. R. Winckler

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a strong geomagnetic storm on May 11-12, 1959, and following a class 3+ chromospheric solar flare on May 10, a large intensity of low-energy solar cosmic-ray protons was observed in a balloon flight at 30-km altitude at Minneapolis, Minnesota. This paper reports the results obtained with an ion chamber, Geiger counter, and scintillation counter. The proton flux of energy above 100 Mev varied from 52 to 1.7/cm2-sec-steradian during the time 0400 to 1800 UT on May 12. The spectrum obtained with the counting instruments is consistent with detailed emulsion studies and has the form N(>E)=CE−7. With E in Mev, [gamma] varies from 5 to 2 during the above time period. The scintillation counter showed excess [gamma] radiation from the nuclear effects of the cosmic-ray protons, and intense bursts of auroral X rays, particularly at 0835 UT on May 12. The solar optical and radio features of the flare are discussed, and the relationship of the polar-cap ionospheric blackout to the Minneapolis measurements is considered. The cosmic-ray protons at Minneapolis are measured at energies well below the normal Störmer cutoff for that latitude. Several theories on this subject are presented.

Book Synopsis Electromagnetic Shielding Feasibility Study by : Robert F. Tooper
Download or read book Electromagnetic Shielding Feasibility Study written by Robert F. Tooper and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses the shielding of personnel against charged particles in space using electric or magnetic fields. The energy distribution and other characteristics of charged particles in space are summarized. The operation and stability of an electrostatic shield (two concentric charged conducting spheres) for protection against 1 -Mev electrons and 500-Mev protons is discussed. Shielded regions for charges in a magnetic dipole field are described. A method is given for calculating trajectories of particles incident on a magnetic dipole in a parallel beam, with sample trajectories illustrated. The vector potential of a cylindrical solenoid is used to get the shielded region for L/R = 1.00, R/Cst = 0.40. The mass of conductors and structure of superconducting solenoids are calculated in terms of the geometry and dipole moment. A non-optimum sample design has a magnetic moment 5. 66 x 1012 gauss cm3, radius and length A meters, weighs 417,000 lb, and protects -50 meters3 from 1-Bev protons. A single-turn magnetic shield could be made 1/10 the mass of a comparable passive shield for 1-Bev protons. Structural considerations and preliminary shielded volume studies indicate that further decrease in mass could be obtained using an optimized cylindrical solenoid. Recommendations for future work emphasize further Studies of cylindrical solenoids and other current configurations.
