Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper investigates the effect of the war on the South Vietnamese economy for the period 1957-1967. For this purpose the economy is divided into five independent sectors: the war effort, the agricultural output, the industrial output, the transportation capacity, and government non-defense expenditures. Each of these sectors is expressed as a linear function of specific political and economic variables of interest and a multiple stepwise regression analysis performed to determine the effect of these specific variables on the individual economic sectors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring the role of military officers and chronicling the sequences of events, Soldiers and Politics in Southeast Asia offers insight into the conditions that fostered military governments specifically in Thailand, Burma, South Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Critically comparing these case studies and statistics, this volume provides readers with a deeper understanding of the causes and consequences of military involvement in the region's politics during the post-colonial period covered. Two ideologically opposed positions evolved around the phenomenon of military insurgency. Technological conservatism generally favors military insurgency in previously civilian-led governments. There was a presumption that it encourages stability, efficiency, and anti-communism. The revisionist position, on the other hand, was highly critical of technological conservatism, especially with regard to its political fervor. J. Stephen Hoadley asserts that the relevant question is not one of ideological choices; rather, it is whether a military or civilian-led government is better suited for the political and economic development of a particular underdeveloped nation. Hoadley argues that there is little difference between military and civilian-led governments in their abilities to establish stability and maintain law.The book concludes that neither conservative nor radical views are fully correct as to the effects of military-led governments on development. Soldiers and Politics in Southeast Asia focuses exclusively on civil-military politics in Southeast Asia in a critical period for the region, and it should be read by all individuals interested in Southeast Asian politics and development long after Cold War issues have come to a close.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes issues in modeling unconventional conflict and suggests a new way to do the modeling. It presents an ontology that describes the unconventional conflict domain, which allows for greater ease in modeling unconventional conflict. Supporting holistic modeling, which means that we can see the entire picture of what needs to be modeled, the ontology allows us to make informed decisions about what to model and what to omit. The unconventional conflict ontology also separates the things we understand best from the things we understand least. This separation means that we can perform verification, validation and accreditation (VV&A) more efficiently and can describe the competence of the model more accurately. However, before this message can be presented in its entirety the supporting body of knowledge has to be explored. For this reason, the book offers chapters that focus on the description of unconventional conflict and the analyses that have been performed, modeling, with a concentration on past efforts at modeling unconventional conflict, the precursors to the ontology, and VV&A. Unconventional conflict is a complex, messy thing. It normally involves multiple actors, with their own conflicting agendas and differing concepts of legitimate actions. This book will present a useful introduction for researchers and professionals within the field.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY This study deals with regional co-operation among developing By regional co-operation is countries and its potential benefits. meant any form of concerted action by the countries of a region aimed at a fuller utilization of their growth potential. Such con certed action may consist of various kinds of economic policy measures regarding production, investment and foreign trade. In this sense, regional co-operation is to be regarded as a facet of the participating countries' overall development strategy. Unlike other studies in this field, dealing with integration among developing countries and focussing attention on the planning of such integra tion (see, e.g., Mennes 1972), the present study concentrates on the effect of integration and co-ordination policies on the structure of intra-and extra-regional trade. Very often large differences exist among developing countries with respect to various aspects of economic development, e.g., the structure of demand, the structure of capital formation and the growth rates of individual sectors. Such divergencies call for the utilization of a multi-country, multi-sector model that will enable a better co-ordination of production and investment policies. Atten tion should thereby be given to the pattern of intra-regional specialization that will result from such a co-ordinated policy.
