Book excerpt: How do you learn about what's going on in the world? Did a news headline grab your attention? Did a news story report on recent research? What do you need to know to be a critical consumer of the news you read? If you are looking to start developing your data self-defense and critical news consumption skills, this book is for you! It reflects a long-term collaboration between a statistician and a journalist to shed light on the statistics behind the stories and the stories behind the statistics. The only prerequisite for enjoying this book is an interest in developing the skills and insights for better understanding news stories that incorporate quantitative information. Chapters in Statistics Behind the Headlines kick off with a news story headline and a summary of the story itself. The meat of each chapter consists of an exploration of the statistical and journalism concepts needed to understand the data analyzed and reported in the story. The chapters are organized around these sections: What ideas will you encounter in this chapter? What is claimed? Is it appropriate? Who is claiming this? Why is it claimed? What makes this a story worth telling? Is this a good measure of impact? How is the claim supported? What evidence is reported? What is the quality/strength of the evidence? Does the claim seem reasonable? How does this claim fit with what is already known? How much does this matter? Considering the coverage Chapters close with connections to the Stats + Stories podcast.

Book excerpt: Mathematics scares and depresses most of us, but politicians, journalists and everyone in power use numbers all the time to bamboozle us. Most maths is really simple - as easy as 2+2 in fact. Better still it can be understood without any jargon, any formulas - and in fact not even many numbers. Most of it is commonsense, and by using a few really simple principles one can quickly see when maths, statistics and numbers are being abused to play tricks - or create policies - which can waste millions of pounds. It is liberating to understand when numbers are telling the truth or being used to lie, whether it is health scares, the costs of government policies, the supposed risks of certain activities or the real burden of taxes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comparative exploration of how journalists across different newsrooms around the world access and interpret statistics when producing stories related to crime. Looking at the nature of news sources regularly used by journalists, Lugo-Ocando analyses how these numbers are used to report crime. As the author argues, far from being straightforward, the relationship between numbers and journalists in the context of crime reporting is complex, and at times, problematic. Because the reporting of crime statistics impacts upon policymaking, we need to better understand how these statistics are used and reported in order to improve the process of decision. Finally, Lugo-Ocando maintains that the only way to create a fairer justice system and a better-informed general public is by improving the way crime is covered in the news. A compelling and informed text, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of criminology and journalism alike.

Book excerpt: News & Numbers is a simple and nonmathematical "how to" guide-how to understand and analyze and explain and do a better job of telling our audiences the truth... - Victor Cohn Numbers and statistical claims are involved in nearly everything that journalists report. Science and medical issues, politics, business, crime analysis, sports-all demand numbers. This book helps the reader answer three key questions about all scientific studies, polls and other statistical claims: What can I believe? What does it mean? How can I explain it to others? The second edition of News & Numbers builds on the tradition set by the original book, emphasizing clear thinking and commonsense approaches for understanding, analyzing and explaining statistics. Terms are explained in easy-to-understand, nontechnical language. This updated edition contains new material in every chapter. New3 features include: a full chapter on polls and polling Sections on reporting disease outbreaks and evaluating managed health care plan A section on focus groups Information on using the Interne Dozens of new examples of numbers in the news The late Victor Cohn was a science writer for the Washington Post for 25 years, serving part of the time as the science editor. He was cited as one of the top science writers by the New York Times and Newsweek.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many texts are excellent sources of knowledge about individual statistical tools, but the art of data analysis is about choosing and using multiple tools. Instead of presenting isolated techniques, this text emphasizes problem solving strategies that address the many issues arising when developing multivariable models using real data and not standard textbook examples. It includes imputation methods for dealing with missing data effectively, methods for dealing with nonlinear relationships and for making the estimation of transformations a formal part of the modeling process, methods for dealing with "too many variables to analyze and not enough observations," and powerful model validation techniques based on the bootstrap. This text realistically deals with model uncertainty and its effects on inference to achieve "safe data mining".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade there has been an explosion in computation and information technology. With it have come vast amounts of data in a variety of fields such as medicine, biology, finance, and marketing. The challenge of understanding these data has led to the development of new tools in the field of statistics, and spawned new areas such as data mining, machine learning, and bioinformatics. Many of these tools have common underpinnings but are often expressed with different terminology. This book describes the important ideas in these areas in a common conceptual framework. While the approach is statistical, the emphasis is on concepts rather than mathematics. Many examples are given, with a liberal use of color graphics. It should be a valuable resource for statisticians and anyone interested in data mining in science or industry. The book’s coverage is broad, from supervised learning (prediction) to unsupervised learning. The many topics include neural networks, support vector machines, classification trees and boosting---the first comprehensive treatment of this topic in any book. This major new edition features many topics not covered in the original, including graphical models, random forests, ensemble methods, least angle regression & path algorithms for the lasso, non-negative matrix factorization, and spectral clustering. There is also a chapter on methods for “wide” data (p bigger than n), including multiple testing and false discovery rates. Trevor Hastie, Robert Tibshirani, and Jerome Friedman are professors of statistics at Stanford University. They are prominent researchers in this area: Hastie and Tibshirani developed generalized additive models and wrote a popular book of that title. Hastie co-developed much of the statistical modeling software and environment in R/S-PLUS and invented principal curves and surfaces. Tibshirani proposed the lasso and is co-author of the very successful An Introduction to the Bootstrap. Friedman is the co-inventor of many data-mining tools including CART, MARS, projection pursuit and gradient boosting.
