Book excerpt: The proposal addressed some statistical inference problems in the areas of multivariate calibration and meta-analysis. Multivariate calibration deals with using the statistical relationship between a response variable and an explanatory variable for statistical inference concerning an unknown value of the explanatory variable using available data. The problems that have been solved deal with the construction of confidence regions for the unknown value of the explanatory variable. Satisfactory solutions to some open problems in this area have been obtained. Meta-analysis deals with combining several independent tests concerning a common parameter. Five papers have been written based on the proposal, of which three are already published. In addition, two papers are currently under preparation. (AN).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multivariate General Linear Models is an integrated introduction to multivariate multiple regression analysis (MMR) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Beginning with an overview of the univariate general linear model, this volume defines the key steps in analyzing linear model data, and introduces multivariate linear model analysis as a generalization of the univariate model. The author focuses on multivariate measures of association for four common multivariate test statistics, presents a flexible method for testing hypotheses on models, and emphasizes the multivariate procedures attributable to Wilks, Pillai, Hotelling, and Roy. The volume concludes with a discussion of canonical correlation analysis that is shown to subsume all the multivariate procedures discussed in previous chapters. The analyses are illustrated throughout the text with three running examples drawing from several disciples, including personnel psychology, anthropology, environmental epidemiology, and neuropsychology.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposal dealt with several statistical inference problems in the context of univariate and multivariate linear models having effects, i.e., fixed effects as well as random effects. Most of the articles that were completed under the grant are on the following topics: (1) improved nonnegative estimation of variance components. (2) exact and/or optimum tests for the fixed effects. and (3) exact and/or optimum tests for variance components. The results have the potential for applications in all areas where the mixed model methodology is used and the applications are highlighted in in most of the articles that were written based on the problems in the proposal.

Book excerpt: This book introduces researchers and students to the concepts and generalized linear models for analyzing quantitative random variables that have one or more bounds. Examples of bounded variables include the percentage of a population eligible to vote (bounded from 0 to 100), or reaction time in milliseconds (bounded below by 0). The human sciences deal in many variables that are bounded. Ignoring bounds can result in misestimation and improper statistical inference. Michael Smithson and Yiyun Shou′s book brings together material on the analysis of limited and bounded variables that is scattered across the literature in several disciplines, and presents it in a style that is both more accessible and up-to-date. The authors provide worked examples in each chapter using real datasets from a variety of disciplines. The software used for the examples include R, SAS, and Stata. The data, software code, and detailed explanations of the example models are available on an accompanying website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the use of generalized linear models for univariate and multivariate regression analysis. Its emphasis is to provide a detailed introductory survey of the subject based on the analysis of real data drawn from a variety of subjects including the biological sciences, economics, and the social sciences. Where possible, technical details and proofs are deferred to an appendix in order to provide an accessible account for non-experts. Topics covered include: models for multi-categorical responses, model checking, time series and longitudinal data, random effects models, and state-space models. Throughout, the authors have taken great pains to discuss the underlying theoretical ideas in ways that relate well to the data at hand. As a result, numerous researchers whose work relies on the use of these models will find this an invaluable account to have on their desks. "The basic aim of the authors is to bring together and review a large part of recent advances in statistical modelling of multivariate and multicategorical models within the generalized linear models framework. Based on well-chosen sets of data, these new developments are introduced to a not necessarily expert audience. Completeness was not an aim. The result is a self-contained, well-written text offering the applied researcher a useful insight into the applicability of the general linear model methodology." P.A.L. Embrechts, ETH-Zentrum, Z rich, Switzerland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Variance, Design, and Regression: Linear Modeling for Unbalanced Data, Second Edition presents linear structures for modeling data with an emphasis on how to incorporate specific ideas (hypotheses) about the structure of the data into a linear model for the data. The book carefully analyzes small data sets by using tools that are easily scaled to big data. The tools also apply to small relevant data sets that are extracted from big data. New to the Second Edition Reorganized to focus on unbalanced data Reworked balanced analyses using methods for unbalanced data Introductions to nonparametric and lasso regression Introductions to general additive and generalized additive models Examination of homologous factors Unbalanced split plot analyses Extensions to generalized linear models R, Minitab®, and SAS code on the author’s website The text can be used in a variety of courses, including a yearlong graduate course on regression and ANOVA or a data analysis course for upper-division statistics students and graduate students from other fields. It places a strong emphasis on interpreting the range of computer output encountered when dealing with unbalanced data.
