This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles theoretical developments on statistical inference for time series and related models in honor of Masanobu Taniguchi's 70th birthday. It covers models such as long-range dependence models, nonlinear conditionally heteroscedastic time series, locally stationary processes, integer-valued time series, Lévy Processes, complex-valued time series, categorical time series, exclusive topic models, and copula models. Many cutting-edge methods such as empirical likelihood methods, quantile regression, portmanteau tests, rank-based inference, change-point detection, testing for the goodness-of-fit, higher-order asymptotic expansion, minimum contrast estimation, optimal transportation, and topological methods are proposed, considered, or applied to complex data based on the statistical inference for stochastic processes. The performances of these methods are illustrated by a variety of data analyses. This collection of original papers provides the reader with comprehensive and state-of-the-art theoretical works on time series and related models. It contains deep and profound treatments of the asymptotic theory of statistical inference. In addition, many specialized methodologies based on the asymptotic theory are presented in a simple way for a wide variety of statistical models. This Festschrift finds its core audiences in statistics, signal processing, and econometrics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a gateway for researchers and graduate students to explore the profound, yet subtle, world of long-range dependence (also known as long memory). The text is organized around the probabilistic properties of stationary processes that are important for determining the presence or absence of long memory. The first few chapters serve as an overview of the general theory of stochastic processes which gives the reader sufficient background, language, and models for the subsequent discussion of long memory. The later chapters devoted to long memory begin with an introduction to the subject along with a brief history of its development, followed by a presentation of what is currently the best known approach, applicable to stationary processes with a finite second moment. The book concludes with a chapter devoted to the author’s own, less standard, point of view of long memory as a phase transition, and even includes some novel results. Most of the material in the book has not previously been published in a single self-contained volume, and can be used for a one- or two-semester graduate topics course. It is complete with helpful exercises and an appendix which describes a number of notions and results belonging to the topics used frequently throughout the book, such as topological groups and an overview of the Karamata theorems on regularly varying functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of spatial processes and their applications is an important topic in statistics and finds wide application particularly in computer vision and image processing. This book is devoted to statistical inference in spatial statistics and is intended for specialists needing an introduction to the subject and to its applications. One of the themes of the book is the demonstration of how these techniques give new insights into classical procedures (including new examples in likelihood theory) and newer statistical paradigms such as Monte-Carlo inference and pseudo-likelihood. Professor Ripley also stresses the importance of edge effects and of lack of a unique asymptotic setting in spatial problems. Throughout, the author discusses the foundational issues posed and the difficulties, both computational and philosophical, which arise. The final chapters consider image restoration and segmentation methods and the averaging and summarising of images. Thus, the book will find wide appeal to researchers in computer vision, image processing, and those applying microscopy in biology, geology and materials science, as well as to statisticians interested in the foundations of their discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces academic researchers and professionals to the basic concepts and methods for characterizing interdependencies of multiple time series in the frequency domain. Detecting causal directions between a pair of time series and the extent of their effects, as well as testing the non existence of a feedback relation between them, have constituted major focal points in multiple time series analysis since Granger introduced the celebrated definition of causality in view of prediction improvement. Causality analysis has since been widely applied in many disciplines. Although most analyses are conducted from the perspective of the time domain, a frequency domain method introduced in this book sheds new light on another aspect that disentangles the interdependencies between multiple time series in terms of long-term or short-term effects, quantitatively characterizing them. The frequency domain method includes the Granger noncausality test as a special case. Chapters 2 and 3 of the book introduce an improved version of the basic concepts for measuring the one-way effect, reciprocity, and association of multiple time series, which were originally proposed by Hosoya. Then the statistical inferences of these measures are presented, with a focus on the stationary multivariate autoregressive moving-average processes, which include the estimation and test of causality change. Empirical analyses are provided to illustrate what alternative aspects are detected and how the methods introduced here can be conveniently applied. Most of the materials in Chapters 4 and 5 are based on the authors' latest research work. Subsidiary items are collected in the Appendix.

Book excerpt: Long-memory processes are known to play an important part in many areas of science and technology, including physics, geophysics, hydrology, telecommunications, economics, finance, climatology, and network engineering. In the last 20 years enormous progress has been made in understanding the probabilistic foundations and statistical principles of such processes. This book provides a timely and comprehensive review, including a thorough discussion of mathematical and probabilistic foundations and statistical methods, emphasizing their practical motivation and mathematical justification. Proofs of the main theorems are provided and data examples illustrate practical aspects. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students in statistics, mathematics, econometrics and other quantitative areas, as well as for practitioners and applied researchers who need to analyze data in which long memory, power laws, self-similar scaling or fractal properties are relevant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this definitive book, D. R. Cox gives a comprehensive and balanced appraisal of statistical inference. He develops the key concepts, describing and comparing the main ideas and controversies over foundational issues that have been keenly argued for more than two-hundred years. Continuing a sixty-year career of major contributions to statistical thought, no one is better placed to give this much-needed account of the field. An appendix gives a more personal assessment of the merits of different ideas. The content ranges from the traditional to the contemporary. While specific applications are not treated, the book is strongly motivated by applications across the sciences and associated technologies. The mathematics is kept as elementary as feasible, though previous knowledge of statistics is assumed. The book will be valued by every user or student of statistics who is serious about understanding the uncertainty inherent in conclusions from statistical analyses.
