Book excerpt: The Fifth Purdue International Symposium on Statistical Decision The was held at Purdue University during the period of ory and Related Topics June 14-19,1992. The symposium brought together many prominent leaders and younger researchers in statistical decision theory and related areas. The format of the Fifth Symposium was different from the previous symposia in that in addition to the 54 invited papers, there were 81 papers presented in contributed paper sessions. Of the 54 invited papers presented at the sym posium, 42 are collected in this volume. The papers are grouped into a total of six parts: Part 1 - Retrospective on Wald's Decision Theory and Sequential Analysis; Part 2 - Asymptotics and Nonparametrics; Part 3 - Bayesian Analysis; Part 4 - Decision Theory and Selection Procedures; Part 5 - Probability and Probabilistic Structures; and Part 6 - Sequential, Adaptive, and Filtering Problems. While many of the papers in the volume give the latest theoretical developments in these areas, a large number are either applied or creative review papers.

Gupta has made pioneering contributions to ranking and selection theory; in particular, to subset selection theory. His list of publications and the numerous citations his publications have received over the last forty years will amply testify to this fact. Besides ranking and selection, his interests include order statistics and reliability theory. The first editor's association with Shanti Gupta goes back to 1965 when he came to Purdue to do his Ph.D. He has the good fortune of being a student, a colleague and a long-standing collaborator of Shanti Gupta. The second editor's association with Shanti Gupta began in 1978 when he started his research in the area of order statistics. During the past twenty years, he has collaborated with Shanti Gupta on several publications. We both feel that our lives have been enriched by our association with him. He has indeed been a friend, philosopher and guide to us.

The symposium brought together many prominent leaders and younger researchers in statistical decision theory and related areas. The 65 invited papers and discussions presented at the symposium are collected in this two-volume work. The papers are grouped into a total of seven parts. Volume I has three parts: Part 1 -Conditioning and Likelihood; Part f! - Bayes and Empirical Bayes Analysis; and Part 9 -Decision Theoretic Estimation. Part 1 contains the proceedings of a Workshop on Conditioning, which was held during the symposium. Most of the articles in Volume I involve either conditioning or Bayesian ideas, resulting in a volume of considerable interest to conditionalists and Bayesians as well as to decision-theorists. Volume II has four parts: Part 1 -Selection, Ranking, and Multiple Com parisons; fart f! -Asymptotic and Sequential Analysis; Part 9 -Estimation and Testing; and Part -4 -Design and Comparison of Experiments and Distributions. These articles encompass the leading edge of much current research in math ematical statistics, with decision theory, of course, receiving special emphasis. It should be noted that the papers in these two volumes are by no means all theoretical; many are applied in nature or are creative review papers.

Book excerpt: For advanced graduate students, this book is a one-stop shop that presents the main ideas of decision theory in an organized, balanced, and mathematically rigorous manner, while observing statistical relevance. All of the major topics are introduced at an elementary level, then developed incrementally to higher levels. The book is self-contained as it provides full proofs, worked-out examples, and problems. The authors present a rigorous account of the concepts and a broad treatment of the major results of classical finite sample size decision theory and modern asymptotic decision theory. With its broad coverage of decision theory, this book fills the gap between standard graduate texts in mathematical statistics and advanced monographs on modern asymptotic theory.

The selection was based on discussions with Willem, and aims at a representative sample. The result is a collection of papers that the new generations of statisticians should not be denied. They are here to stay, to enjoy and to form the basis for further research. The papers are grouped into six themes: fundamental statistics, asymptotic theory, second-order approximations, resampling, applications, and probability. This volume serves as basic reference for fundamental statistical theory, and at the same time reveals some of its history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributed in honour of Lucien Le Cam on the occasion of his 70th birthday, the papers reflect the immense influence that his work has had on modern statistics. They include discussions of his seminal ideas, historical perspectives, and contributions to current research - spanning two centuries with a new translation of a paper of Daniel Bernoulli. The volume begins with a paper by Aalen, which describes Le Cams role in the founding of the martingale analysis of point processes, and ends with one by Yu, exploring the position of just one of Le Cams ideas in modern semiparametric theory. The other 27 papers touch on areas such as local asymptotic normality, contiguity, efficiency, admissibility, minimaxity, empirical process theory, and biological medical, and meteorological applications - where Le Cams insights have laid the foundations for new theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly acclaimed text, now available in paperback, provides a thorough account of key concepts and theoretical results, with particular emphasis on viewing statistical inference as a special case of decision theory. Information-theoretic concepts play a central role in the development of the theory, which provides, in particular, a detailed discussion of the problem of specification of so-called prior ignorance . The work is written from the authors s committed Bayesian perspective, but an overview of non-Bayesian theories is also provided, and each chapter contains a wide-ranging critical re-examination of controversial issues. The level of mathematics used is such that most material is accessible to readers with knowledge of advanced calculus. In particular, no knowledge of abstract measure theory is assumed, and the emphasis throughout is on statistical concepts rather than rigorous mathematics. The book will be an ideal source for all students and researchers in statistics, mathematics, decision analysis, economic and business studies, and all branches of science and engineering, who wish to further their understanding of Bayesian statistics

Book excerpt: Kendall's Advanced Theory of Statistics and Kendall's Library of Statistics The development of modern statistical theory in the past fifty years is reflected in the history of the late Sir Maurice Kenfall's volumes The Advanced Theory of Statistics. The Advanced Theory began life as a two-volume work, and since its first appearance in 1943, has been an indispensable source for the core theory of classical statistics. With Bayesian Inference, the same high standard has been applied to this important and exciting new body of theory.

Book excerpt: This volume is based on the invited and the contributed presentations given at the Indo-U.S. Workshop on Bayesian Analysis in Statistics and Econometrics (BASE), Dec. 19-23, 1988, held at the Hotel Taj Residency, Bangalore, India. The workshop was jointly sponsored by The Ohio State University, The Indian Statistical Institute, The Indian Econometrics So ciety, U.S. National Science Foundation and the NSF-NBER Seminar on Bayesian Inference in Econometrics. Profs. Morrie DeGroot, Prem Goel, and Arnold Zellner were the program organizers. Unfortunately, Morrie became seriously ill just before the workshop was to start and could not participate in the workshop. Almost a year later, Morrie passed away after fighting valiantly with the illness. Not to find Morrie among ourselves was a shock for most of us. He was a continuous source of inspiration and ideas. Even while Morrie was fighting for his life, we had a lot of discussions about the contents of this volume and the Bangalore Workshop. He even talked about organizing a Second Indo-U.S. workshop some time in the near future. We are dedicating this volume to the memory of Prof. Morris H. DeGroot. We have taken a conscious decision not to include any biography of Morrie in this volume. An excellent biography of Morrie has appeared in Statistical Science [(1991), vol. 6, 1-14], and we could not have done a better job than that.
