Book excerpt: The joint strengthening effects of transversely-isotropic boron film reinforcement added to fibrous laminates has been demonstrated for single fastened joints in earlier experimental work. It was the configurations where multiple fasteners, rather than single bolts, transferred the load. Bidirectional (plus or minus 45 deg) graphite fiber/epoxy resin composites were fabricated to form a series of double lap bolted joint models, each containing three bolts at constant pitch distance. The specimens were tested to measure the joint strengthening effectiveness of colaminated boron/polymide film, introduced locally at 6 or 12 volume percent levels. The results were that such film additions increased the load transfer capacity of the joint systems nearly double that of the corresponding fiber-only specimens. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The joint strengthening effect of plane- isotropic boron film reinforcement added to fibrous laminates was investigated. Uniaxial, bi-axial, and tri-axial graphite fiber/epoxy resin composites were fabricated to form a series of double lap bolted joint models. There were tested to measure the joint-strength effectiveness of the plane- isotropic boron film when added locally at 6 and 12 volume percent levels. The results showed that the addition of omni-directional film plies to the highly directional fiber laminae increased the joint strength and stiffness up to 200%, the chief contribution of the boron film being high bearing strength and resistance to shear distortion. A novel test method for bolted lap joints was developed in which the bolt head pressure was maintained constant by means of preloaded springs, thus eliminating the ambiquity resulting from an unknown contribution of the bolt clamping friction to the total joint strength. The strength- weight-effectiveness of boron film reinforcement was demonstrated. (Author, modified-PL).

Book excerpt: This report presents a literature review of the state-of-the-art analyticaland experimental methodologies adopted in the aerospace indestry for thedesign of mechanically fastened joints in composite structures. Results andconclusions obtained from the published literature relating to the effectsof critical parameters, which include composite material system, fastenerconfiguration and joint geometry, on the mechanical behaviour and failuremodes of composite mechanically fastened joints are discussed. Furtherresearch required to improve the design of composite mechanically fastenedjoints is identified as a result of this review.

Book excerpt: In this investigation the structural use of 'Kevlar' fibre reinforced plastic is examined by an experimental analysis of mechanical joints in various types of laminates. The material used was woven fabric in 913 resin. Static tests on riveted joints (solid and hollow rivets) as well as pinned and bolted joints were carried out. Riveted joints in CFRP were also tested for the sake of comparison. Variables such as geometric factors, bolt clamping pressure, ply orientation and effect of clamping load on riveted joints with solid rivets were investigated. The compressive properties of 'Kevlar'fibre, in combination with the characteristics of woven fabrics, caused unexpected behaviour. In comparison with the CFRP laminates, the KFRP specimens exhibited 'metal-like' features at failure. The strength depended on lay-up and through-thickness clamping caused a change in failure mode.

Book excerpt: The analysis of mechanically fastened composite joints presents a great challenge to structural analysts because of the large number of parameters that influence strength. These parameters include edge distance, width, bolt diameter, laminate thickness, ply orientation, and bolt torque. The research presented in this report investigates the influence of some of these parameters through testing and analysis. A methodology is presented for estimating the strength of the bolt-hole based on classical lamination theory using the Tsai-Hill failure criteria and typical bolthole bearing analytical methods.Fox, D. Book excerpt: Nowadays, it is quite easy to see various applications of fibrous composites, functionally graded materials, laminated composite, nano-structured reinforcement, morphing composites, in many engineering fields, such as aerospace, mechanical, naval and civil engineering. The increase in the use of composite structures in different engineering practices justify the present international meeting where researches from every part of the globe can share and discuss the recent advancements regarding the use of standard structural components within advanced applications such as buckling, vibrations, repair, reinforcements, concrete, composite laminated materials and more recent metamaterials. For this reason, the establishment of this 19th edition of International Conference on Composite Structures has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the previous editions. ICCS wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures, sandwich panels, nanotechnology, bio-composites, delamination and fracture, experimental methods, manufacturing and other countless topics that have filled many sessions during this conference. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Porto (Portugal), selected plenary and keynote lectures have been collected in the present book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is presented for predicting the failure strength and failure mode of mechanically fastened joints made of fiber reinforced composite laminates. The method includes two steps. First, the stress distribution in the laminate is calculated by the use of a finite element method. Second, the failure load and the failure mode are predicted by means of a proposed failure hypothesis together with Yamada's failure criterion. A computer code was developed which can be used to calculate the maximum load and the mode of failure of joints involving laminates with different ply orientations, different material properties, and different geometries. Results generated by the present method were compared to data and to existing analytical and numerical solutions. The results of the present method were found to agree well with the those reported previously. Parametric studies were also performed to evaluate the effects of joint geometry and ply orientation on the failure strength and on the failure mode. (Author).

Book excerpt: The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions—particularly from fossil fuel-powered vehicles and airplanes by means of weight savings and leaner fuel consumption, helps to restrain environmental impacts. In general, for a variety of industries, and specifically in the case of transport, where both weight savings and increased energy efficiency are pursued, the use of metal–polymer multi-material structures has been growing at an increasing and particularly fast pace in recent years. Several manufacturing techniques have been, or are being, developed, with the aim of being used for producing dissimilar materials in cost-efficient manners. This book presents recent developments in the state of the art of advanced additive manufacturing and the joining of metal–polymer multi-material structures in transportation. This publication mainly focuses on the correlations between microstructure, manufacturing process (i.e., AddJoining, adhesive bonding, friction riveting, friction-based staking and friction spot joining) properties, and the mechanical performance of metal–polymer multi-material structures.

At the same time, the introduction of new tough resins has increased the static strength of composite joints with implications for the corresponding strength in fatigue. A number of NATO nations have built up databases and developed methods for strength and life analyses; in order to take advantage of these resources the Structures and Materials Panel held a Specialists' Meeting, in conjunction with the 64th Panel Meeting, at Madrid, Spain on 27th - 29th April 1987, under the chairmanship of Professor Vittorio Giavotto, to provide a focus for methods of analysis and the identification of research needs. This volume contains the papers presented at this Specialists' Meeting. Joints (junctions); Composite materials; Mechanical properties; Life (durability); Mechanical tests; Research projects.
