Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static Fields and Potentials describes two of the fundamental interactions in nature: gravity and electromagnetism. The book introduces the associated fields, potentials, and energies and explains the relationship among them. It shows how these interactions manifest themselves in different ways, from the formation of stars to the operation of thunderstorms. The book also demonstrates how they are harnessed technologically in applications, such as hydroelectricity, electrical circuitry, and DNA finger-printing.

Book excerpt: The editors are pleased to present these Proceedings of the V Course of the "International School of Radiation Damage and Pro tection" of the "E. Majorana Centre", held in Erice (Italy) in No vember 1983. The lectures and discussions among leading scientists in various disciplines of physics, engineering, biophysics, cellular biology, physiology and medicine from 11 countries are included in this compilation. In this volume we have attempted to explore all aspects of the interaction of static and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF: 0-300 Hz) electric and magnetic fields with biological tissue, systems and whole organisms; we considered dosimetry and what is known or pre sumed concerning basic interactions, responses from the cellular and molecular level to the whole organism. Discussions of medical appli cations as well as epidemiologic investigations related to high volt age transmission were held with critiques of methodologies used and recommendations for future approaches. Consideration was also given to the necessity and principles of setting protection standards for man and the environment. We believe this is the first attempt to put all this informa tion together into one volume to provide perspective for understand ing the influence of static and ELF electric and magnetic fields on biological systems. We hope our attempts were successful. Martino Grandolfo Sol M. Michaelson Alessandro Rindi v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This is the Fifth Course of the International School of Radia tion Damage and Protection of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Sci entific Culture directed by Professor A. Zichichi.

Book excerpt: This is a textbook designed to provide analytical background material in the area of Engineering Electromagnetic Fields for the senior level undergraduate and preparatory level graduate electrical engineering students. It is also an excellent reference book for researchers in the field of computational electromagnetic fields. The textbook covers ? Static Electric and Magnetic Fields: The basic laws governing the Electrostatics, Magnetostatics with engineering examples are presented which are enough to understand the fields and the electric current and charge sources. Dynamic Electromagnetic Fields: The Maxwell's equations in Time-Domain and solutions, the Maxwell's equations in Frequency-Domain and solutions. Extensive approaches are presented to solve partial differential equations satisfying electromagnetic boundary value problems. Foundation to electromagnetic field radiation, guided wave propagation is discussed to expose at the undergraduate level application of the Maxwell's equations to practical engineering problems.

Book excerpt: Among the subjects covered in this volume are the topological effects of quantum mechanics, including Bohm-Aharonov and Aharonov-Casher effects and their generalisations; the toroidal moments, anapoles and their generalisations; the numerical investigation of Tonomura experiments testing the foundations of quantum mechanics; the time-dependent Bohm-Aharonov effect, the thorough study of toroidal solenoids and their use as effective transmitters of electromagnetic waves; and the topical questions of the Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation. Furthermore, concrete advice is given for the construction of magnetic and electric solenoids and the performance of experiments on the Bohm-Aharonov effect. In addition, properties of remarkable charge-current configurations and practical applications are studied. Audience: This volume will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers dealing with new effective sources of electromagnetic waves.

Book excerpt: Electromagnetics for Engineering Students starts with an introduction to vector analysis and progressive chapters provide readers with information about dielectric materials, electrostatic and magnetostatic fields, as well as wave propagation in different situations. Each chapter is supported by many illustrative examples and solved problems which serve to explain the principles of the topics and enhance the knowledge of students. In addition to the coverage of classical topics in electromagnetics, the book explains advanced concepts and topics such as the application of multi-pole expansion for scalar and vector potentials, an in depth treatment for the topic of the scalar potential including the boundary-value problems in cylindrical and spherical coordinates systems, metamaterials, artificial magnetic conductors and the concept of negative refractive index. Key features of this textbook include: • detailed and easy-to follow presentation of mathematical analyses and problems • a total of 681 problems (162 illustrative examples, 88 solved problems, and 431 end of chapter problems) • an appendix of mathematical formulae and functions Electromagnetics for Engineering Students is an ideal textbook for first and second year engineering students who are learning about electromagnetism and related mathematical theorems.

Book excerpt: A Modern Introduction to Classical Electrodynamics is suitable for undergraduate students with some background knowledge of the subject and for graduate students, while more advanced topics make it a useful resource for PhD students and researchers. The book places much emphasis on the formal structure of the theory; beginning with Maxwell's equations in the vacuum, it emphasises the central role of gauge invariance and Special Relativity. After introductory chapters which include rederivations of elementary results of electrostatics and magnetostatics, and the multipole expansion, Special Relativity is introduced, and most of the subsequent derivations are performed using covariant formalism and gauge potentials, allowing for greater conceptual and technical clarity compared to more traditional treatments. The second part of the book covers electrodynamics in material media. This includes Maxwell's equations in material media, frequency dependent response of materials and Kramers-Kronig relations, electromagnetic waves in materials, and scattering of electromagnetic radiation. Finally, the text also includes advanced topics, such as the field-theoretical treatment of classical electrodynamics as a modern treatment of radiation reaction. These parts are meant for the advanced reader and are clearly marked, and can be skipped without loss of continuity.
