Book excerpt: A rigorous first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is employed along with modified ABD parameters to analyze static and free vibration behavior of generally laminated beams and shafts. Different approaches for calculating composite beam stiffness parameters have been considered and the most accurate one that accounts for material couplings have been used to analyze static and free vibration behaviors of straight beams with different laminates and boundary conditions. In order to analyze curved beams, the term (1+z/R) is exactly integrated into ABD parameters formulation and an equivalent modulus of elasticity is used instead of traditional stiffness terms to account for both the deepness and material coupling of the beam structures. The model has been solved analytically for simply supported boundary conditions and the general differential quadrature (GDQ) technique has been used for other boundary conditions. The results for deflection, moment resultants, and natural frequencies of straight and curved beams with different deepness ratio (often called depth ratio), slenderness ratio, lamination, and boundary conditions are compared with those obtained from accurate three dimensional finite element simulations using ANSYS. The results were in close proximity to three dimensional finite element results. The model is then applied to transverse vibration analysis of multi-span generally laminated composite shafts with a lumped mass using GDQ. The results for natural frequencies are compared to experimental and other analytical models as well as finite element simulation. The results in the present analyses were found accurate. Conclusively, it has been shown that when considering more accurate stiffness parameters, a First Order Shear Deformation Theory can accurately predict static and free vibration behaviors of composite beams and multispan shafts of any deepness, lamination and boundary conditions.

Book excerpt: This book develops a uniform accurate method which is capable of dealing with vibrations of laminated beams, plates and shells with arbitrary boundary conditions including classical boundaries, elastic supports and their combinations. It also provides numerous solutions for various configurations including various boundary conditions, laminated schemes, geometry and material parameters, which fill certain gaps in this area of reach and may serve as benchmark solutions for the readers. For each case, corresponding fundamental equations in the framework of classical and shear deformation theory are developed. Following the fundamental equations, numerous free vibration results are presented for various configurations including different boundary conditions, laminated sequences and geometry and material properties. The proposed method and corresponding formulations can be readily extended to static analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive study of the nonlinear statics and dynamics of composite beams and consists of solutions with and without active elements embedded in the beams. The static solution provides the initial conditions for the dynamic analysis. The dynamic problems considered include the analyses of clamped (hingeless) and articulated (hinged) accelerating rotating beams. Two independent numerical solutions for the steady state and the transient responses are presented. The author illustrates that the transient solution of the nonlinear formulation of accelerating rotating beam converges to the steady state solution obtained by the shooting method. Other key areas considered include calculation of the effect of perturbing the steady state solution, coupled nonlinear flap-lag dynamics of a rotating articulated beam with hinge offset and aerodynamic damping, and static and dynamic responses of nonlinear composite beams with embedded anisotropic piezo-composite actuators. The book is intended as a thorough study of nonlinear elasticity of slender beams and is targeted to researchers, graduate students, and practicing engineers in the fields of structural dynamics, aerospace structures, and mechanical engineering.

Book excerpt: This book aims to present in depth several Higher-order Shear Deformation Theories (HSDTs) by means of a unified approach for the mechanical analysis of doubly-curved shell structures made of anisotropic and composite materials. In particular, the strong and weak formulations of the corresponding governing equations are discussed and illustrated. The approach presented in this volume is completely general and represents a valid tool to investigate the structural behavior of many arbitrarily shaped structures. An isogeometric mapping procedure is also illustrated to this aim. Special attention is given also to advanced and innovative constituents, such as Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs), Variable Angle Tow (VAT) composites and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). In addition, several numerical applications are developed to support the theoretical models. Accurate, efficient and reliable numerical techniques able to approximate both derivatives and integrals are presented, which are respectively the Differential Quadrature (DQ) and Integral Quadrature (IQ) methods. Finally, two numerical techniques, named Strong Formulation Finite Element Method (SFEM) and Weak Formulation Finite Element Method (WFEM), are developed to deal with multi-element domains characterized by arbitrary shapes and discontinuities.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to show the features of DiQuMASPAB so ware through the description of its graphical interface, by giving special emphasis to all those aspects implemented in the code. DiQuMASPAB, acronym of “Differential Quadrature for Mechanics of Anisotropic Shells, Plates, Arches and Beams”, is a computational code, which can be used for the numerical analysis of doubly curved shells made of innovative materials, using the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) and the Generalized Integral Quadrature (GIQ) methods. The software can investigate the mechanical behavior of these structures through different approaches and structural theories. In particular, this code allows considering a kinematic expansion characterized by different degrees of freedom for the Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) theories and for each layer when the Layer-Wise (LW) approach is taken into account. As far as the materials are concerned, it is possible to consider different lamination schemes, as well as various distributions of the volume fraction of the constituents for those layers that vary their mechanical properties along the thickness. In addition, the software analyzes structures with variable thickness and characterized by variable mechanical properties that can change point by point. A finite element formulation is also available to investigate the mechanical behavior of plane structures characterized by irregular domains and mechanical discontinuities.

Book excerpt: This is a textbook written for use in a graduate-level course for students of mechanics and engineering science. It is designed to cover the essential features of modern variational methods and to demonstrate how a number of basic mathematical concepts can be used to produce a unified theory of variational mechanics. As prerequisite to using this text, we assume that the student is equipped with an introductory course in functional analysis at a level roughly equal to that covered, for example, in Kolmogorov and Fomin (Functional Analysis, Vol. I, Graylock, Rochester, 1957) and possibly a graduate-level course in continuum mechanics. Numerous references to supplementary material are listed throughout the book. We are indebted to Professor Jim Douglas of the University of Chicago, who read an earlier version of the manuscript and whose detailed suggestions were extremely helpful in preparing the final draft. He also gratefully acknowledge that much of our own research work on variational theory was supported by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research. He are indebted to Mr. Ming-Goei Sheu for help in proofreading. Finally, we wish to express thanks to Mrs. Marilyn Gude for her excellent and pains taking job of typing the manuscript. J. T. ODEN J. Book excerpt: The conventional finite element formulation has limitations in performing the dynamic analysis of composite beams. The discretization necessary for obtaining solutions with acceptable accuracy in the determination of dynamic response parameters leads to discontinuities in stress and strain distributions. The hierarchical finite element formulation provides us with the advantages of using fewer elements and obtaining better accuracy in the calculation of natural frequencies, displacements and stresses. The hierarchical finite element formulation for uniform and variable-thickness composite beams is developed in the present work. Two sub-formulations of hierarchical finite element method viz. polynomial and trigonometric sub-formulations have been developed. The efficiency and accuracy of the developed formulation are established in comparison with closed-form solutions for uniform composite beams. The static response of uniform composite beams is evaluated using the hierarchical finite element method. The dynamic response of variable-thickness composite beams is calculated based on the developed formulation. A detailed parametric study encompassing the influences of boundary conditions, laminate configuration, taper angle and the type of taper on the dynamic response of the beam is performed. The NCT-301 graphite-epoxy composite material is considered in the analysis and in the parametric study.

Book excerpt: In this study, in plane free vibration characteristics of laminated curved beams with variable curvatures are studied. The present problem is modeled by differential eigenvalue problem with variable coefficients. FDM (Finite Difference Method) is used to solve the differential eigenvalue problem. A computer program is developed in Mathematica and this program is verified by using results available in the literature. The effects of curvature and lamination parameters of the curved beams on natural frequencies are investigated.
