Book excerpt: Excerpt from Statements: Theological and Critical In the execution of this project, Dr. Whedon was unable to proceed beyond a partial outline and the indication of a few passages for insertion. What he thus intended, but from failing strength could not accomplish, he intrusted to his son and nephew to take up and carry to completion. The plan adopted by them made necessary a few verbal modifications, in no case, however, touching the sentiments of the author. They have found it expedient, with the ap proval of the publishers, to enlarge the plan to two volumes instead of one, as originally contemplated. Book Synopsis Nathan Scott's Literary Criticism and Fundamental Theology by : William D. Buhrman
Download or read book Nathan Scott's Literary Criticism and Fundamental Theology written by William D. Buhrman and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nathan Scott's Literary Criticism and Fundamental Theology reexamines the pioneering contribution of Nathan A. Scott, Jr. to the field of theology and literature. It both recalls Scott's achievement and suggests its continuing value by focusing on the question of Scott's method. Rather than following the traditional interpretation of Scott as a literary critic employing Paul Tillich's theology of culture, this book proposes that Scott's work is best understood as a form of fundamental theology. In doing so, it suggests that Scott's work models ways in which literary texts may be appropriately incorporated into theological discourse."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis Essays in Postfoundationalist Theology by : Jacobus Wentzel Van Huyssteen
Download or read book Essays in Postfoundationalist Theology written by Jacobus Wentzel Van Huyssteen and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays boldly addresses many of the challenges faced by Christian theology in the context of contemporary postmodern thought. Handling abstract topics in a remarkably clear and concise way, J. Wentzel van Huyssteen presses the case for a "postfoundationalist theology" as a viable third option beyond the extremes of foundationalism and nonfoundationalism. Van Huyssteen discusses themes related to rationality, epistemology, and philosophy of science. In the process he critically engages the work of such thinkers as Wolfhart Pannenberg, Nancey Murphy, Jerome Stone, and Gerd Theissen. The result is a convincing argument that only a truly accessible and philosophically credible notion of interdisciplinarity will be able to pave the way for a plausible public theology that can play an important intellectual role in our fragmented culture today.

Book Synopsis Abortion and the Christian Tradition by : Margaret D. Kamitsuka
Download or read book Abortion and the Christian Tradition written by Margaret D. Kamitsuka and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abortion remains the most contested political issue in American life. Poll results have remained surprisingly constant over the years, with roughly equal numbers supporting and opposing it. A common perception is that abortion is contrary to Christian teaching and values. While some have challenged that perception, few have attempted a comprehensive critique and constructive counterargument on Christian ethical and theological grounds.Margaret Kamitsuka begins with a careful examination of the churchs biblical and historical record, refuting the assumption that Christianity has always condemned abortion or that it considered personhood as beginning at the moment of conception. She then offers carefully crafted ethical arguments about the pregnant womans authority to make reproductive decisions and builds a theological rationale for seeing abortion as something other than a sin.

Book Synopsis The Eucharist as the Center of Theology by : Richard A. Nicholas
Download or read book The Eucharist as the Center of Theology written by Richard A. Nicholas and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One contemporary critique of Thomistic theology is that it dehistoricizes the relationship between God and creation. This position is a consequence of identifying the prius of theology as God. The Eucharist as the Center of Theology offers an alternative in that it examines a free historical prius, the Eucharist, as proposed by Donald J. Keefe, S.J., and then discusses and develops aspects of St. Thomas Aquinas' thought that support such a prius.
Book Synopsis The Coming of the Son of Man by : Andrew Perriman
Download or read book The Coming of the Son of Man written by Andrew Perriman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the powerful motif of the coming of the Son of man from Daniel through to Revelation, Andrew Perriman provides thought-provoking ideas about eschatological narrative. What was it like to hear the biblical proclamation of this coming for the first time in a cultural, political, and religious context very different from our own? How did early Christians think about the imminence of the promised day of the Lord? What difference did this message make to how they thought, lived, and spread the gospel message? This book engages the minds of jaded twenty-first-century postmoderns who have heard it all before. By seeing the fulfilment of much of New Testament apocalyptic in events of the first centuries, Perriman proposes that in some important sense we have moved beyond eschatology--into an age of renewed community and mission that is creational in its scope.ÊThe Coming of the Son of ManÊis important reading for those who want to engage in the debate concerning what church is--and will be.
Book Synopsis Doing Theology in Today's World by : John D. Woodbridge
Download or read book Doing Theology in Today's World written by John D. Woodbridge and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 1994-07 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on a central question: What does a person need to know for developing a theology? In other words, this book will not only answer objections lodged against the study of theology, but will explain to students, pastors, and laypersons alike what a theologian actually does. It will also present different approaches to the study of theology and review the present status of theological reflection in various Protestant, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic traditions. In the first section of the book evangelical Protestant scholars describe the contributions various disciplines make to the study of theology. In the next section, evangelical Protestant scholars explain the distinctives of their approaches to doing theology. In the third part, theologians who do not identify with evangelical Protestant convictions seek to explain the distinctives of their approaches to doing theology. In the final section, Dr. Kantzer provides a summary analysis of how he does theology and interacts critically with a number of essays in this volume.
