Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Montreal Massacre: A Story of Membership Categorization Analysis adopts an ethnomethodological viewpoint to analyze how the murder of women by a lone gunman at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal was presented to the public via media publication over a two-week period in 1989. All that the public came to know and understand of the murders, the murderer, and the victims was constituted in the description and commentaries produced by the media. What the murders became, therefore, was an expression of the methods used to describe and evaluate them, and central to these methods was membership category analysis — the human practice of perceiving people, places, and events as “members” of “categories,” and to use these to explain actions. This is evident in the various versions comprising the overall story of the Massacre: it was a crime; it was a tragedy; it was a horror story. The killer’s story is also based on his own categorial analysis (he said his victims were “feminists”). The media commentators formulated the significance of the murders in categorial terms: it implicated a wider problem, that of violence against women, and thus the reasons for the murders were shown to be categorial matters. As a contribution to sociology, and as a demonstration of the significance of ethnomethodology for understanding social life, the book reveals the methodical and particularly categorial character of how sense is made of events such as this and how such methodical and categorial resources are central to human interaction.

Book excerpt: "A practical exercise in Canadian contextual theology, Rage and Resistance analyzes responses to a tragic historical event by engaging with the work of theologian Gregory Baum and sociologist Dorothy E. Smith. Baum articulates the theological imperative to address the context in which our lives are embedded, calling for critical social analysis in order to understand, and possibly convert, social evil; Smith takes the standpoint of women as a determinate position from which society may be known."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis Remembering Women Murdered by Men by : Cultural Memory Group

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women are murdered by men every day, yet these acts of femicide barely make the news. Across Canada, there are over fifty memorials to women who have been murdered. Each one tells at least two stories: the terrible one of unremitting violence against women and the triumphant one of women claiming public space, naming the violence and insisting that society remember. This book is the first to record thirty of these, and in so doing names the women remembered and the circumstances of their deaths. The authors document the feminist community's response and the initiative taken to build memorials along with the official attempts to keep them out of public view. The memorials documented include those in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, The Pas, Toronto, Montreal, London, Ottawa and Moncton. Remembering Women Murdered by Men features the voices of memorial makers and the struggle of bringing public attention to the issue of femicide. It inspires all of us to speak out. Book Synopsis Daniel Goleman Omnibus by : Daniel Goleman
Download or read book Daniel Goleman Omnibus written by Daniel Goleman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotional Intelligence Does IQ define our destiny? Daniel Goleman argues that our view of human intelligence is far too narrow, and that our emotions play a major role in thought, decision making and individual success. Self-awareness, impulse control, persistence, motivation, empathy and social deftness are all qualities that mark people who excel: whose relationships flourish, who are stars in the workplace. With new insights into the brain architecture underlying emotion and rationality, Goleman shows precisely how emotional intelligence can be nurtured and strengthened in all of us. Working with Emotional Intelligence Do you want to be more successful at work? Do you want to improve your chances of promotion? Do you want to get on better with your colleagues? Daniel Goleman draws on unparalleled access to business leaders around the world and the thorough research that is his trademark. He demonstrates that emotional intelligence at work matters twice as much as cognitive abilities such as IQ or technical expertise in this inspiring sequel.

Book excerpt: What do the attacks in London Bridge, Manchester and Westminster have in common with those at the Charlie Hebdo offices, the Finsbury Park Mosque attack and multiple US shootings? They were all carried out by men with histories of domestic violence. 'Revelation' Sunday Times: Best Book of 2019 'Achieves the rare feat of saying something new' John Bew 'Powerfully written' The Times TERRORISM BEGINS AT HOME. Terrorism is seen as a special category of crime that has blinded us to the obvious - that it is, almost always, male violence. The extraordinary link between so many tragic recent attacks is that the perpetrators have practised in private before their public outbursts. In these searing case studies, Joan Smith, feminist and human rights campaigner, makes a compelling and persuasive argument for a radical shift in perspective. Incomprehensible ideology is transformed through her clear-eyed research into a disturbing but familiar pattern. From the Manchester bomber to the Charlie Hebdo attackers, from angry white men to the Bethnal Green girls, from US school shootings to the London gang members who joined ISIS, Joan Smith shows that, time and time again, misogyny, trauma and abuse lurk beneath the 'justifications' of religion or politics. Until Smith pointed it out in 2017, criminal authorities missed this connection because violence against women is dangerously normalised. Yet, since domestic abuse often comes before a public attack, it's here a solution to the scourge of our age might be found. Thought-provoking and essential, Home-Grown will lift the veil on a revelatory truth. For fans of Invisible Women by Caroline Criado-Perez and Misogynation by Laura Bates.
