It is free to read at Oxford Academic and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Across the world, the number of people forcibly displaced from their homes has more than doubled during the last decade. Although international law does not allow states to turn back refugees, some countries close their borders to refugees, some open their borders and grant extensive protection, while others admit some groups of refugees while excluding others. How can we make sense of these different responses to admitting refugees? In this book, Daniel Drewski and Jürgen Gerhards show that governments' refugee policy, as well as the stance adopted by opposition parties on the issue, is heavily dependent on how they frame their country's collective identity on the one hand and the identity and characteristics of the refugees on the other. By defining the "we" and the "others", politicians draw on collectively shared cultural repertoires, which vary by country and by political constituency within a country. The book is based on a discourse analysis of parliamentary debates. It explores the specific framing of nations' identities and the corresponding perceptions of otherness by focusing on six countries that have been confronted with large numbers of refugees: Germany, Poland, and Turkey, all responding to the exodus of Syrian and Middle Eastern refugees; Chile's reaction to the Venezuelan displacement; Singapore and its stance towards Rohingya refugees; and Uganda's response to the displacement from South Sudan. The study explores not only differences between governments of different countries but also the conflicting views of different political parties within the same country. This volume has emerged from research carried out as part of the Cluster of Excellence "Contestations of the Liberal Script - SCRIPTS", which analyzes the contemporary controversies about liberal ideas, institutions, and practices on the national and international level from a historical, global, and comparative perspective. It connects academic expertise in the social sciences and area studies and collaborates with research institutions in all world regions. Operating since 2019 and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), SCRIPTS unites eight major Berlin-based research institutions: Freie Universität Berlin, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), the Hertie School, the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), the Berlin branch of the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA), the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS), and the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book assembles case studies on the human dimension of the Holocaust as illuminated in the academic work of preeminent Holocaust scholar Deborah Dwork, the founding director of the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, home of the first doctoral program focusing solely on the Holocaust and other genocides. Written by fourteen of her former doctoral students, its chapters explore how agency, a key category in recent Holocaust studies and the work of Dwork, works in a variety of different ‘small’ settings – such as a specific locale or region, an organization, or a group of individuals.

Book excerpt: This book explores the question of whether the conceptualisation of New Zealand as a welcoming nation is accurate. Examining historical and contemporary narratives of migrant and refugee discrimination, it considers the economic, social, political, cultural and historical contexts from which discrimination emerges and its repercussions. Alert to race and ethnicity, gender, age, class, religion and inter-ethnic migrant conflict, this volume traverses an array of discriminatory practices – including xenophobia, racism and sectarianism – and responses to them. With rich evidence, fascinating new insights and engagement comparatively and transnationally with global themes of exploitation, exclusion and inequalities, Narratives of Migrant and Refuge Discrimination in New Zealand will appeal to scholars across the humanities and social sciences with interests in migration and diaspora studies, race and ethnicity and refugee studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the continuities and substantial transformations in Greek foreign policy before the beginning and during the unfolding of the economic crisis. Although up until now, significant attention has been cast on the rise of the neo-Nazi movement, the abuses and dysfunctions of the Greek economy, and the immense social ramifications of unemployment, less is understood about the impact on Greek diplomacy and foreign policy. This collective work not only attempts to delineate future trends in Greek foreign policy, but also seeks to explore the current events that resemble more a Greek tragedy than the systemic challenges that every nation has to face. This edited volume, quite original in its field of analysis, will be of interest to International Relations academics, foreign policy professionals, Politics and Economic students and the general public who follow developments pertaining to Greece and the European Union, as well theoretical debates surrounding International Relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a protracted displacement situation, refugees are sequestered in camps without right of mobility or employment; their lives remain on hold and stagnate in a state of limbo for a long period. This book reviews the situation and results of research and policies that have left refugees as a forgotten group in protracted situations. The work features case studies by experts who conducted field work examining long-term protracted refugee situations in Nepal, Thailand and Bangladesh, the protracted internally displaced (IDP) situation in Sri Lanka, and the refugee and IDP situation in Afghanistan. Also discussed is an emerging protracted refugee and IDP problem in Iraq. The volume concludes with an analysis of the lessons learned and the applications for policy, and incorporates a valuable bibliography detailing research in this hugely important area. This is a critical resource for academics and policy makers concerned with migration and governance issues.
