The record of what has been done – and what hasn’t – will surprise even well-informed readers. The focus is on six policy areas: Indigenous rights, governance and housing; the environment and energy; taxes and spending; healthcare and social benefits; foreign policy, immigration, and trade; and social policy including drug reform, labour rights, and racism. Editors KATHERINE SCOTT, LAURA MACDONALD and STUART TREW of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and Carleton University have recruited Canada’s most knowledgeable experts in their areas to contribute to this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning second volume of wartime speeches and broadcasts from the Nobel Prize–winning prime minister captures the troubled early days of WWII. Legendary politician and military strategist Winston S. Churchill was a master not only of the battlefield, but of the page and the podium. Over the course of forty books and countless speeches, broadcasts, news items, and more, he addressed a country at war and at peace, thrilling with victory but uneasy with its shifting role on the world stage. In 1953, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for “his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.” During his lifetime, he enthralled readers and brought crowds roaring to their feet; in the years since his death, his skilled writing has inspired generations of eager history buffs. This second volume in the series of the great orator’s wartime speeches, broadcasts, public messages, and other communications take readers through the difficult years of 1940 to 1941. Faced with a challenging moment for the military as well as a groundswell of criticism from his government and his people, Churchill used his extraordinary command of language to inspire Britain to stand strong against Hitler and the growing Nazi threat. No fan of WWII military history should be without this extraordinary collection of seventy-two broadcasts, speeches, and messages to Parliament.

This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Final Report of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its six-year investigation of the residential school system for Aboriginal youth and the legacy of these schools. This report, the summary volume, includes the history of residential schools, the legacy of that school system, and the full text of the Commission's 94 recommendations for action to address that legacy. This report lays bare a part of Canada's history that until recently was little-known to most non-Aboriginal Canadians. The Commission discusses the logic of the colonization of Canada's territories, and why and how policy and practice developed to end the existence of distinct societies of Aboriginal peoples. Using brief excerpts from the powerful testimony heard from Survivors, this report documents the residential school system which forced children into institutions where they were forbidden to speak their language, required to discard their clothing in favour of institutional wear, given inadequate food, housed in inferior and fire-prone buildings, required to work when they should have been studying, and subjected to emotional, psychological and often physical abuse. In this setting, cruel punishments were all too common, as was sexual abuse. More than 30,000 Survivors have been compensated financially by the Government of Canada for their experiences in residential schools, but the legacy of this experience is ongoing today. This report explains the links to high rates of Aboriginal children being taken from their families, abuse of drugs and alcohol, and high rates of suicide. The report documents the drastic decline in the presence of Aboriginal languages, even as Survivors and others work to maintain their distinctive cultures, traditions, and governance. The report offers 94 calls to action on the part of governments, churches, public institutions and non-Aboriginal Canadians as a path to meaningful reconciliation of Canada today with Aboriginal citizens. Even though the historical experience of residential schools constituted an act of cultural genocide by Canadian government authorities, the United Nation's declaration of the rights of aboriginal peoples and the specific recommendations of the Commission offer a path to move from apology for these events to true reconciliation that can be embraced by all Canadians.

Book excerpt: From the 1950s to the late 1990s, agents of the state spied on, interrogated, and harassed gays and lesbians in Canada, employing social ideologies and other practices to construct their targets as threats to society. Based on official security documents and interviews with gays, lesbians, civil servants, and high-ranking officials, this path-breaking book discloses acts of state repression and forms of resistance that raise questions about just whose national security was being protected. Passionate and personalized, this account of how the state used the ideology of national security to wage war on its own people offers ways of understanding, and resisting, contemporary conflicts such as the "war on terror."

Book excerpt: This book explores the 2019 Canadian Federal Election through a political marketing framework. Justin Trudeau’s leadership appeal, coupled with the differentiation of Canadian politics from American politics over recent elections, has contributed to a spike in interest for politics in the Canadian context. This collection provides in-depth quantitative and qualitative research of different aspects of this election, including the attempted re-branding of the Conservative Party under Andrew Scheer, the marketing of the NDP with the selection of the first visible minority party leader in Canadian history, the political marketing of the Bloc Québécois, Green Party, and People’s Party and, foremost perhaps, the brand maintenance of Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada. The book also looks at campaign marketing, and considers how the parties in this election utilized market intelligence, consumer data and vote targeting, and wedge issues during the campaign.
