Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Speed. Bump. Speed. Traffic considers the history and philosophy of roundabouts, speed bumps, the pedestrian mall, and other efforts to manage traffic. Exploring ways to reign in the power of the internal combustion engine, ramp back century-long efforts to increase the flows of traffic, and establish greater balance between humans and machines, Paul Josephson considers the history of traffic, and the political and other controversies that frame the belated technological efforts to calm it. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Book excerpt: The research program "Improving The Residential Street Environment" deals with control and restraint or management of traffic on local residential streets. This State of The Art report covers current practices in this field through 1978. The report assesses the performance of various control devices to affect traffic on existing residential streets (as opposed to initial design features of new Subdivisions). Included are diagonal diverters, half-diverters, cul-de-sacs, median barriers, speed bumps and undulations, stop signs, rumble strips and many other measures. The report also details techniques for developing neighborhood traffic control plans including community involvement and technical evaluation elements.

In 1981, when Donald Appleyard's Livable Streets was published, it was globally recognized as a groundbreaking work, one of the most influential urban design books of its time. Unfortunately, he was killed a year later by a speeding drunk driver. This latest update, Livable Streets 2.0, revisited by his son Bruce, updates the topic with the latest research, new case studies, and best human-centered practices for creating more livable streets for all. It is essential reading for those who influence future directions in city and transportation planning, urban design, and community regeneration, and placemaking. - Incorporates the most current empirical research on urban transportation and land use practices that support the need for more livable communities - Includes recent case studies from around the world on successful projects, campaigns, programs, and other efforts - Contains new coverage of vulnerable populations

Book Synopsis The Infrastructures of Security by : Martin Murray
Download or read book The Infrastructures of Security written by Martin Murray and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the South African government’s response to crime—especially in Johannesburg—has been to rely increasingly on technology. This includes the widespread use of video cameras, Artificial Intelligence, machine-learning, and automated systems, effectively replacing human watchers with machine watchers. The aggregate effect of such steps is to determine who is, and isn’t, allowed to be in public spaces—essentially another way to continue segregation. In The Infrastructures of Security, author Martin J. Murray concentrates on not only the turn toward technological solutions to managing the risk of crime through digital (and software-based) surveillance and automated information systems, but also the introduction of somewhat bizarre and fly-by-night experimental “answers” to perceived risk and danger. Digitalized surveillance is significant for two reasons: first, it enables monitoring to take place across wide "geographical distances with little time delay"; and second, it allows for the active sorting, identification, and "tracking of bodies, behaviors, and characteristics of subject populations on a continuous, real-time basis." These new software-based surveillance technologies represent monitoring, tracking, and information gathering without walls, towers, or guards.
