Book excerpt: Every college age student should have the opportunity to attend college and earn a degree, but the fiscal realities for lower income students prevent the majority from attending and the vast majority from completing college, thus perpetuating an intergenerational trend of limited postsecondary education and a likelihood of marginal income and status. Past research studies have shown that, among lower income students, those who receive higher levels of grant funding to offset college expenses are more likely to persist toward completing their educations than those who do not receive the same level of grant funding and thus are forced to rely upon other means, such as student loans or employment, to pay for college. The majority of this research was conducted prior to the recession that began in December 2007 (National Bureau of Economic Research, 2008), which has been more severe and longer lasting than any economic contraction since the Great Depression (Dwyer & Lothian, 2012); more current research is needed to determine whether the educational retention behaviors of lower income students in the current challenging economic climate are positively impacted by grant funding. In this study I used quantitative methods to analyze a specific state policy change to determine whether a significant change in the grant funding provided to lower income students resulted in increased retention rates for these students. This study examines school years from 2006-2010, thus encompassing the recent financial crisis and affording an opportunity to explore the persistence behaviors of lower income students during the greatest financial crisis of modern times. The ultimate purpose of the study is to provide conclusions from the research to postsecondary policy makers in the hopes of informing policy and supporting continuing funding of need-based financial aid for lower income students.

Book excerpt: In this report, the authors investigate the relationship between levels of financial aid and student success in Louisiana community colleges, with a focus on Pell Grant recipients. They measure success by whether a student earned a certificate or an associate's degree within three years of enrolling as a first-time full-time student or transferred to a four-year Louisiana university within the same timeframe. In this study, the authors use student unit record (SUR) data that have been merged with detailed information on student financial aid awards. This report is a companion to the authors' earlier study of the effects of grants and scholarships on student retention in Louisiana's four-year regional state university campuses. In that study, they concluded that by more effectively targeting its scholarships and grants (what we call "Gift Aid"), Louisiana could increase student retention while saving almost $400,000 per year. As this community college study is about to show, strategically targeting financial aid to increase the success of community college students appears to be far less likely to succeed. Findings from the current study show: (1) As the number of developmental courses in which a student enrolls increases, student success decreases; (2) Pell Grants do not overcome differences in success rates across income levels among students with equivalent academic preparation; (3) The level of community college students' Need Met With Gift Aid is weakly associated with completion; and (4) Higher levels of Need Met With Gift Aid are not associated with greater student success for students who took more than one developmental course. Comparison of Full-time and Part-time First-time Louisiana Community College Students Enrolled Fall 2006 and Fall 2007 data table is appended. (Contains 6 tables, 1 chart, and 6 footnotes.).

Book excerpt: The role of community colleges is to provide educational opportunities to all segments of a population regardless of academic proficiency or economic ability. This open-access admissions policy is meant to allow equal admission to academic and careertechnical programs for all students. Due to open-access admissions, economically disadvantaged community college students find themselves being admissible to community colleges with uncertain financial ability to pay for community college even though it is at a lower cost than 4-year institutions. Community college students historically face more financial and social barriers than 4-year students in attaining higher education and thus have a greater need for federal financial aid assistance. Students attending community colleges participate in federal grant-in-aid and student loan programs at a higher rate than any other type of institution. With this greater need for financial aid assistance, community college students are still held to the same federal financial aid academic standards. Students receiving federal financial aid must meet the same grade-point average, completion rate, and eligibility limit requirements as their university counterparts. These standards impact students at the community college level at an even higher rate than those at the university. The purpose of this study was to determine if students who do not meet federal financial aid academic standards and are placed on financial aid probation can be retained at the community college level using an online intervention course. The knowledge obtained from the course could facilitate the selection of optimal and cost-effective intervention strategies. Determination is necessary in order to eliminate current online intervention, adapt the intervention methods, or continue supporting intervention through allocating resources to the program that may allow for expansion and outcome inference to future student populations. This study specifically explored the retention of students who do not meet corresponding Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) indicators through the inclusion of an online intervention course. Student data were obtained from online course outcomes over multiple semesters from a community college in the Southern Region of the United States, yielding quantitative data for analysis. Educational opportunities tend to be viewed in a dramaturgical or symbolic perspective and viewed as successful based on student outcomes. It was assumed that student outcomes are tangible, and the link between means and ends are clear, meaning student outcome attainment equals employment and life success. In this instance, a return on investment study is not intended, but rather program effectiveness in influencing student outcomes. This program can be considered effective as it provides causation for increased performance, subsequent retention, and positive impact on financial aid status. The addition of an online intervention course supports causation linkage. It also supports the correlation of predicting post-semester cumulative grade point average (GPA), and the performance within the course provides inference to the participant’s future status.

Dr. Stanley was the first to discover a biological control for aflatoxins, toxic metabolites produced by certain fungi, which affect the quality of grains used extensively in animal and poultry feeds. Dr. Stanley taught several undergraduate and graduate courses for majors and nonmajors, including poultry science, animal breeding and genetics, and animal nutrition, and he is the recipient of numerous college and university awards for excellence in research, teaching, advising, and mentoring. At the end of his career at Prairie View A&M University, he has successfully mentored twenty-four students toward the PhD degree in the United States and Canada and, additionally, thirty-five students toward the pursuit of a DVM degree. Several of his former students have pursued graduate studies and professional degrees at Cornell University, Texas A&M University, Tuskegee University, and the University of Guelph. He is passionate about and committed to student growth and development in the college years and beyond.

The study sought to answer the following research question: 1. To what degree are student factors--high school GPA, ethnicity, gender, first generation higher institution student status, SAT or ACT scores, socioeconomic status (SES), and financial aid eligibility (grants, loans, federal aid, scholarships)--related to first year retention at a college/university? This study used descriptive and logistic regression analyses from the Fall 2012-2013 school year data provided by the public university in Texas. Contributing factors (High School GPA, ethnicity, gender, first generation college student status, SAT or ACT scores, socioeconomic status (SES), and financial aid eligibility (grants, loans, federal aid, scholarships) were analyzed to determine the best predictor(s) of first year student retention for the Fall 2013-2014 school year at the public university. The study revealed that of the sample analyzed, 68.8% of the students were retained for the Fall 2013-2014 school year while the other 31.2% were not retained. The logistic regression revealed financial aid (grants, loans, scholarships) to be the most predictive variable for the retention of first year higher education students in 2013-2014.
