Initially all the controllers are developed by using MATLAB simulink model. In this project, PID, PI, and P controller are developed and tuned in order to get faster step response and the Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is design based on the membership function and the rule base. The expectation of this project is the Fuzzy Logic Controller will get the best performance compared to other controllers in terms of settling time (Ts), rise time (Tr), peak time (Tp), and percent overshoot (%OS). Finally a GUI of these controllers are developed which allow the users to select any controller and change its parameters according to the different conditions under loaded and unloaded scenarios.

Book excerpt: This project is focused on implementation of the Propotional (P), Integral (I) and Derivative (D) control system algorithms in microcontroller unit (MCU) for direct current (DC) motor speed control. The PIC series, PIC18F2331 has been used to perform the processing of PID algorithms for DC motor control purpose. The focus is on 12 volt DC motor with 30 revolutions per minute (rpm) maximum speed. No-load case and loaded case are the scope for this research. Three experiments have been done to look how much PID control algorithms affect the performances on driving actual DC motor; PI algorithm experiment, PD algorithm experiment and PID algorithm experiment. The result shows that, implementation of PID algorithm in small scale MCU is possible. PID algorithm that has been impelmented in MCU inside the DC motor controller module system can eliminate the steady state error and overshoot problem including settling time. By creating real time data acquisition software, the performance of the system is monitored and later on analyzed. It is later found out that the PID algorithm has been able to create faster settling time while the overshoot has been reduced to 5% and the steady-state has been successfully reduced. The impact of the load and no load application of the PID algorithm can be already seen by how the PID algorithm has helped the controller to drive a loaded DC motor to the desired speed which could not be achieved without the PID algorithm.

Here soft start method is implemented to start the motor safely without any external starter. In this controller the set point can be changed during run time. So, it is not required to off the controller to set new set point speed. This increases the flexibility of the controller. The detail ladder logic, hardware components and circuit required to perform this work is discussed in this book.

The proposed method incorporates fuzzy logic and conventional controllers with utilization of vector control technique. This method combines the advantages of fuzzy logic controller and conventional controllers to improve the speed response of the induction motor. The design of fuzzy system consists of 9 fuzzy variables and 49 IF THEN rules that define the behavior of the system. The FLC observes the loop error signal and correspondingly control the PID input error signal so that the actual speed signal matches the reference speed signal with reduced rise time, settling time, and peak over shoot. Implementation and simulation results using MATLAB SIMULINK of various hybrid system controllers are compared along with conventional PI controller in terms of several performance measurements such as rise time, maximum percent overshoot, settling time, and steady state error at various load conditions. The results verified the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid speed controller under different operating conditions and demonstrated improvements in performance in speed tracking and system's stability.

The proposed controller and the pulse width modulator (PWM) inverter algorithm which have been built in FPGA have resulted in a fast speed response and a good stability in controlling the three-phase induction motor. For comparison purpose, two widely used controllers are realized using the same FPGA kit: PID and Fuzzy. Simulations are performed using MATLAB/SIMULINK (R2009a) with varying load and speed conditions. The Fuzzy-PID control strategy outperformed both PID and Fuzzy controllers. The used of PLC in this project will help to reduce complexity and easy to troubleshoot. The model of PLC which is used in this project is OMRON (CQM1H-CPU51) and the program for this controller system is in ladder diagram (CX programmer). The PID is implemented in the PLC program so that the system has a better response and less error. Finally, analysis of the response is made after the PID is implemented into the system.
