Book excerpt: The Scorpion takes place in the near future in a day where when you die, they take your brain and hook it up to a computer giving it the ability to think like a human with the speed and accuracy of a computer. The Scorpion, a USS starship, comes back to Earth to get a new brain because the old one has gone senile. Upon returning to Earth the Captain of the Scorpion is informed that they must head out by the end of the week, with or without a brain, on a rescue mission to save two scientists and their families who have been studying the collapse of a sun into a black hole. The scientists have been there three years. Their inter space shuttle has been destroyed and the sun is collapsing inward. The only ship close enough and fast enough to have any hope at all of getting there on time, is Scorpion. And even then it’s marginal. At the last minute a brain is found and installed but the brain is drunk so it is hooked up all but the main plug while they wait for the brain to sober up. Meanwhile the Scorpion gets underway. The captain falls in love with a new recruit. There is a stowaway and they come across an enemy flattop that is breaking up in space. They rescue the survivors. The brain is functioning perfectly. Everything seems to be going just fine.Due to the high alcohol levels of the brain, the program to obey orders did not hold. Unbeknownst to the Captain and the crew, the Scorpion has a new master. One that holds grudges. One that plots and schemes working to fulfill an agenda of its own. Using a disgruntled officer who felt that he should be in command, along with the rescued crew members of the Kobon flattop, and the ship’s own onboard robots, hell is about to break loose on board the USS Scorpion.

It was becoming apparent that it had to be built, as global warming had it's way with the planet Earth. Construction began on the starship, in orbit, above Earth. No one anticipated the angry and vitriolicopposition from the major religions on Earth; the formation of militias that attacked logistical sites; and no one expected the rate of the habitat deterioration due to global warming.Civilization was crumbling around them as the orginization responsible for the project struggled to complete the starship and laucnch it toward the planet in the Scorpio star system.

Book excerpt: No creature has quite the sting in our mythology and folklore as the scorpion. From the dawn of human civilization they have been a dangerous figure in our imaginations—poisonous, precise, and deadly quiet—but as Louise M. Pryke shows in this book, their bad reputation has overshadowed many exceptional qualities. Scurrying across hundreds of millions of years and across every continent except Antarctica, this book gives the scorpion its due as one of nature’s longest lasting survivors. Indeed scorpions are older than dinosaurs. An ancient arthropod, their form—notable for its pair of pincers and an elegant tail that holds a menacing stinger high in the air in a permanent striking position—hasn’t changed since prehistoric times, though today there are some 1700 different species. Throughout our existence scorpions have served as a powerful cultural and religious symbol—sometimes dangerous, sometimes protecting—from the Egyptian goddess Serket to Zodiac astrology to folk medicine. A fascinating tour that takes us from the art of North Africa to the American Civil War to the markets of Beijing, Scorpion is an homage to one of earth’s oldest residents.

Book excerpt: Fighting Fantasy gamebooks have sold over 17 million books worldwide, in over 30 languages. But when Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone sat down to write The Warlock of Firetop Mountain they had no idea this one book would go on to spawn another eighty or more titles, and have an immeasurable impact on a generation of children growing up in the 1980s. Part history, part celebration, YOU ARE THE HERO chronicles more than three decades of Fighting Fantasy. Written by Jonathan Green (author of seven Fighting Fantasy titles), this mighty tome will appeal to anyone who ever wiled away a washed-out summer holiday with only two dice, a pencil, and an eraser for company. This is a fixed format PDF eBook, with all of the same stunning, full-colour artwork as the hardback and paperback. Best viewed on a colour screen of 7" upwards, as a daily reader to keep your precious hardback safe. “YOU ARE THE HERO is as read-under-the-covers immersive as its subject matter; great characters, amazing stories and a surprise behind every door. 5 stars!" -- SCIFI Now “The most comprehensive history of the Fighting Fantasy phenomenon I've ever seen. With its maps, notes, art and photographs it's not just a celebration but a fascinating resource." -- SFX “How many thousands of heroes did these books create? And how many lost their lives with a bad roll of the dice? A publishing phenomenon, without which computer games wouldn't be what they are today. About time these books were celebrated. Now go to page 45 and face your nemesis." -- Charlie Higson
