Book excerpt: In nearby galaxies, an empirical relation has been established between star formation and gas surface densities, the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS). The relation is nearly linear when molecular gas (H2) is considered, while is less tight with atomic hydrogen (HI). These low gas density regions are of a key importance in the field of star formation, since the are also low metallicity environments, resembling the conditions of a younger universe. This thesis summarizes the observational work done with the IRAM 30MT telescope in two kinds of such regions : disk galaxies with extended ultra-violet emission (XUV), and the interstellar medium going into the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) under ram-pressure stripping in the Virgo cluster. The galex telescope has unveiled in far ultra-violet (FUV) star formation in the outer parts of some disk galaxies that was not traced by HA. To determine the presence of H2 and analyse the K-S relation in these regions, CO observations where done in the outskirts of several XUV disk galaxies, finding both detections and upper limits. These K-S relations showed a broken power law at low gas densities, below the HI-H2 threshold. In the Virgo cluster, similar CO observations were done along the HI tidal arm connecting NGC4388 and M86, where no H2 is expected. Two detections were found, showing very low star formation efficiencies (depleting less than 0,1 % of the gas reservoir per 10 [exposant] 8 yr), and showing again a disconuity of the K-S relation at low gas densities, probing that the process of a gas consumption into stars well known at high densities cannot be extrapolated to lower densities, and that H2 can survive a certain time in the hostile ICM.

Book Synopsis Outskirts of Galaxies by : Johan H. Knapen
Download or read book Outskirts of Galaxies written by Johan H. Knapen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-09 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of invited reviews written by world-renowned experts on the subject of the outskirts of galaxies, an upcoming field which has been understudied so far. These regions are faint and hard to observe, yet hide a tremendous amount of information on the origin and early evolution of galaxies. They thus allow astronomers to address some of the most topical problems, such as gaseous and satellite accretion, radial migration, and merging. The book is published in conjunction with the celebration of the end of the four-year DAGAL project, an EU-funded initial training network, and with a major international conference on the topic held in March 2016 in Toledo. It thus reflects not only the views of the experts, but also the scientific discussions and progress achieved during the project and the meeting. The reviews in the book describe the most modern observations of the outer regions of our own Galaxy, and of galaxies in the local and high-redshift Universe. They tackle disks, haloes, streams, and accretion as observed through deep imaging and spectroscopy, and guide the reader through the various formation and evolution scenarios for galaxies. The reviews focus on the major open questions in the field, and explore how they can be tackled in the future. This book provides a unique entry point into the field for graduate students and non-specialists, and serves as a reference work for researchers in this exciting new field.

Book Synopsis Secular Evolution of Galaxies by : Jesús Falcón-Barroso
Download or read book Secular Evolution of Galaxies written by Jesús Falcón-Barroso and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formation and evolution of galaxies is one of the most important topics in modern astrophysics. Secular evolution refers to the relatively slow dynamical evolution due to internal processes induced by a galaxy's spiral arms, bars, galactic winds, black holes and dark matter haloes. It plays an important role in the evolution of spiral galaxies with major consequences for galactic bulges, the transfer of angular momentum, and the distribution of a galaxy's constituent stars, gas and dust. This internal evolution is in turn the key to understanding and testing cosmological models of galaxy formation and evolution. Based on the twenty-third Winter School of the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics, this volume presents reviews from nine world-renowned experts on the observational and theoretical research into secular processes, and what these processes can tell us about the structure and formation of galaxies. The volume provides a firm grounding for graduate students and early career researchers working on galactic dynamics and galaxy evolution.
Book Synopsis The Birth of Star Clusters by : Steven Stahler
Download or read book The Birth of Star Clusters written by Steven Stahler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All stars are born in groups. The origin of these groups has long been a key question in astronomy, one that interests researchers in star formation, the interstellar medium, and cosmology. This volume summarizes current progress in the field, and includes contributions from both theorists and observers. Star clusters appear with a wide range of properties, and are born in a variety of physical conditions. Yet the key question remains: How do diffuse clouds of gas condense into the collections of luminous objects we call stars? This book will benefit graduate students, newcomers to the field, and also experienced scientists seeking a convenient reference.
Book Synopsis The Evolution of Galaxies by : Marc Sauvage
Download or read book The Evolution of Galaxies written by Marc Sauvage and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galaxies have a history. This has become clear from recent sky surveys which have shown that distant galaxies, formed early in the life of the Universe, differ from the nearby ones. New observational windows at ultraviolet, infrared and millimetric wavelengths (provided by ROSAT, IRAM, IUE, IRAS, ISO) have revealed that galaxies contain a wealth of components: very hot gas, atomic hydrogen, molecules, dust, dark matter ... A significant advance is expected due to new instruments (VLT, FIRST, XMM) which will allow one to explore the most distant Universe. Three Euroconferences have been planned to punctuate this new epoch in galactic research, bringing together specialists in various fields of Astronomy.
Book Synopsis Chemical Evolution of Galaxies by : Francesca Matteucci
Download or read book Chemical Evolution of Galaxies written by Francesca Matteucci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “chemical evolution of galaxies” refers to the evolution of abundances of chemical species in galaxies, which is due to nuclear processes occurring in stars and to gas flows into and out of galaxies. This book deals with the chemical evolution of galaxies of all morphological types (ellipticals, spirals and irregulars) and stresses the importance of the star formation histories in determining the properties of stellar populations in different galaxies. The topic is approached in a didactical and logical manner via galaxy evolution models which are compared with observational results obtained in the last two decades: The reader is given an introduction to the concept of chemical abundances and learns about the main stellar populations in our Galaxy as well as about the classification of galaxy types and their main observables. In the core of the book, the construction and solution of chemical evolution models are discussed in detail, followed by descriptions and interpretations of observations of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way, spheroidal galaxies, irregular galaxies and of cosmic chemical evolution. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to students as well as to amend our present ideas in research; the book also summarizes the efforts made by authors in the past several years in order to further future research in the field.
Book Synopsis Principles of Star Formation by : Peter Bodenheimer
Download or read book Principles of Star Formation written by Peter Bodenheimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding star formation is one of the key fields in present-day astrophysics. This book treats a wide variety of the physical processes involved, as well as the main observational discoveries, with key points being discussed in detail. The current star formation in our galaxy is emphasized, because the most detailed observations are available for this case. The book presents a comparison of the various scenarios for star formation, discusses the basic physics underlying each one, and follows in detail the history of a star from its initial state in the interstellar gas to its becoming a condensed object in equilibrium. Both theoretical and observational evidence to support the validity of the general evolutionary path are presented, and methods for comparing the two are emphasized. The author is a recognized expert in calculations of the evolution of protostars, the structure and evolution of disks, and stellar evolution in general. This book will be of value to graduate students in astronomy and astrophysics as well as to active researchers in the field.
Book Synopsis The Magellanic System (IAU S256) by : International Astronomical Union. Symposium
Download or read book The Magellanic System (IAU S256) written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-16 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the most complete and up-to-date accounts of our understanding of the Magellanic Clouds and the astrophysical processes within them. Observations of these nearby dwarf galaxies continue to advance, calibrate and challenge our knowledge of the cosmos. They are rich in gas, they have been actively forming stars throughout their history, and they display a wealth of dynamical features. Poor in metals, they serve as a stepping stone towards understanding the high-redshift Universe. In IAU Symposium 256, scientists from vastly different fields of research discuss galactic dynamics, the physics of the interstellar medium and star formation, and the fundamental properties and evolution of stars. New insight was gained by crossing the traditional boundaries of these fields, placing the findings in the context of the structure and evolution of this interacting pair of galaxies uniquely available to our ever more powerful telescopes and computational machinery.
Book Synopsis The Physics of Galaxy Formation by : Claudia Del P. Lagos
Download or read book The Physics of Galaxy Formation written by Claudia Del P. Lagos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses two of the central processes which underpin the formation of galaxies: the formation of stars and the injection of energy into the interstellar medium from supernovae, called feedback. In her work Claudia Lagos has completely overhauled the treatment of these processes in simulations of galaxy formation. Her thesis makes two major breakthroughs, and represents the first major steps forward in these areas in more than a decade. Her work has enabled, for the first time, predictions to be made which can be compared against new observations which probe the neutral gas content of galaxies, opening up a completely novel way to constrain the models. The treatment of feedback from supernovae, and how this removes material from the interstellar medium, is also likely to have a lasting impact on the field. Claudia Lagos Ph.D. thesis was nominated by the Institute for Computational Cosmology at Durham University as an outstanding Ph.D. thesis 2012.

Book Synopsis Nearly Normal Galaxies by : Sandra M. Faber
Download or read book Nearly Normal Galaxies written by Sandra M. Faber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is sometimes said that astronomy is the crossroads of physics. In the same spirit, it can forcefully be argued that galaxies are the crossroads of astronomy. Internal pro ces ses within galaxies involve all of the fundamental components of astrophysics: stellar evolution, star formation, low-density astrophysics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and high-energy astrophysics. Indeed, one can hardly name an observational datum in any wavelength range on any kind of celestial object that does not provide a useful clue to galaxy formation and evolution. Although internal processes in galaxies until recently occupied most of our attention, we now know that it is also vital to relate galaxies to their environment. How galaxies congregate in larger structures and are in turn influenced by them are crucial questions for galactic evolution. On a grander level we have also come to regard galaxies as the basic building blocks of the universe, the basic units whereby the large scale structure of the universe is apprehended and quantified. On a grander level still, we also believe strongly that galaxies are the direct descendents of early density irregularities in the Big Bang. Galaxy properties are now viewed as providing a crucial constraint on the physics of the Big Bang and a vital link between the macroscopic and microscopic structure of the universe.
