Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a source document for specifying wind and wave conditions for the North Pacific Ocean. The data are derived from the U.S. Navy's Spectral Ocean Wave Model (SOWM) hindcast wind and wave climatology. Some initial efforts by the Navy to synthesize the hindcasts into design tools are presented in this report. The report provides seasonal and geographic distributions of wind and wave parameters and specifies mathematical models by which wave spectra, required by any ship seakeeping performance methodology, can be developed. Long-term extreme wave predictions for fatigue analysis are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waves critically affect man in coastal regions, including the open coasts and adjacent continental shelves. Preventing beach erosion, designing and building structures, designing and operating ships, providing marine forecasts, and coastal planning are but a few examples of projects for which extensive information about wave conditions is critical. Scientific studies, especially those in volving coastal processes and the development of better wave prediction models, also require wave condition information. How ever, wave conditions along and off the coasts of the United States have not been adequately determined. The main categories of available wave data are visual estimates of wave conditions made from ships at sea, scientific measurements of waves made for short time periods at specific locations, and a small number of long-term measurements made from piers or offshore platforms. With these considerations in mind, the National Ocean Survey of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sponsored the Ocean Wave Climate Symposium at Herndon, Virginia, July 12-14, 1977. This volume contains papers presented at this symposium. A goal of the symposium was to establish the foundations for a com prehensive and far-sighted wave measurement and analysis program to fully describe the coastal wave climate of the United States. Emphasis was placed on ocean engineering and scientific uses of wave data, existing wave monitoring programs, and modern measure ment techniques which may provide currently needed data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geostrophic wind components computed from monthly mean atmospheric sea level pressure charts are employed as indices of wind intensity over the principal current systems in the North Pacific Ocean. Pressure differences across pairs of points at 36 locations and deviations from long-term monthly means are tabulated for a 33-year period, 1926-58. The data for certain locations were combined to form regional indices representing wind components tangential to the major North Pacific Ocean currents. The mean seasonal cycles of these indices show marked differences in phase and amplitude for the various regions. Monthly anomalies are found to have generally larger magnitudes in winter months than in other seasons. Some evidence of long-term trends is indicated by graphical representation of time series and decade means. In particular, weak wind components occurred over the Oyashio and Alaska currents during the winter months of the period 1946-55, while over the California current the wind components were stronger, than during the previous decade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pilot atlas introduces a new, numerically derived, historical data set in the form of a wind and wave climatology. Existing wave climatologies are primarily based on visual ship observations, these climatologies may be unreliable, particularly in data-sparse regions. This atlas provides the design, scientific and operational communities with a detailed representation of the overall wave climate of the whole North Pacific Ocean. Keywords: Spectral Ocean Wave Model (SOWM); Grid; Wind speed and direction; Significant wave height; Primary wave direction; Wave slope parameter; Modal wave period; Directionality of the waves; Isopleth analyses; Contingency; Durations and intervals; Atlas.

Book excerpt: This book provides a holistic, interdisciplinary overview of offshore wind energy, and is a must-read for advanced researchers. Topics, from the design and analysis of future turbines, to the decommissioning of wind farms, are covered. The scope of the work ranges from analytical, numerical and experimental advancements in structural and fluid mechanics, to novel developments in risk, safety & reliability engineering for offshore wind. The core objective of the current work is to make offshore wind energy more competitive, by improving the reliability, and operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies of wind turbines. The research was carried out under the auspices of the EU-funded project, MARE-WINT. The project provided a unique opportunity for a group of researchers to work closely together, undergo multidisciplinary doctoral training, and conduct research in the area of offshore wind energy generation. Contributions from expert, external authors are also included, and the complete work seeks to bridge the gap between research and a rapidly-evolving industry.
