Book excerpt: This Part of YY/T 0988 includes stereological test methods for characterizing the coating thickness, porosity and average intercept of various porous coatings attached to non-porous substrates. Methods for measuring porosity and intercept at different levels of the "tissue interface gradient" in the various thicknesses of porous coatings are outlined in 9.4. The tangential sampling method in 8.2 is not applicable to the tissue interface gradient method in 9.4. This Part uses the International System of Units (SI). This Part does not attempt to describe all the security issues involved; even those security issues related to its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices, and to clarify the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PEEK biomaterials are currently used in hundreds of thousands of spinal fusion patients around the world every year. Durability, biocompatibility, and excellent resistance to aggressive sterilization procedures make PEEK a polymer of choice, replacing metal in orthopedic implants, from spinal implants and knee replacements to finger joints and dental implants. The new edition of this authoritative work sees the book expand from 17 chapters to 26 chapters to match the expansion in applications in PEEK—from spinal cages to spinal rods and disc replacements; hip and knee joint replacement; dental; trauma; and sports medicine. New PEEK formulations have been developed incorporating hydroxyapatite, additives to combat infection, and surface grafted polymers to improve lubrication. The book also covers additive manufacturing, which has made significant inroads with PEEK in the past 5 years as well by introducing the prospect of patient-specific implants.Like the 1st edition, the updated Handbook brings together experts in many different facets related to PEEK clinical performance as well as in the areas of materials science, tribology, and biology to provide a complete reference for specialists in the field of plastics, biomaterials, medical device design, and surgical applications.Useful for materials scientists and biomedical engineers, both in industry and academia, the book is a one-stop shop for information on PEEK as a biomaterial—including in-depth coverage of materials properties—while also providing cutting-edge information on applications and combinations of the material. - Presents a complete reference work covering PEEK, the leading polymer for spinal implants and a range of other biomedical applications - Covers a range of new formulations and applications, including in-depth coverage of the additive manufacturing of PEEK - Provides a vital source of supporting information for materials selection decisions and regulatory submissions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preclinical testing is a critical part of the orthopaedic device design process and is required to demonstrate efficacy, safety and adherence to the requirements of essential regulations. The following chapter provides an overview of the key regulatory and technical requirements associated with mechanical and tribological testing of orthopaedic devices and the characterization of metallic coatings applied to such devices for improved biological fixation. Mechanical testing is typically carried out according to regional or international standards that define the type of device to be tested, its laboratory-based performance requirements and reference criteria that a product must meet. The most widely used tests for orthopaedic devices are static or fatigue tests. These may be conducted under compression, bending, shear or torsion, depending on the in vivo loading conditions that they are trying to replicate. Bearing wear simulator test methods have evolved over several decades from simpler tests such as pin-on-plate to more realistic tests that replicate the forces and motions experienced during walking or other gait cycles and, importantly, allow the testing of actual components. Current wear simulator test standards for hip and knee joints are reviewed and methods of characterizing wear debris and measuring friction are discussed. Metallic coatings on orthopaedic devices can be employed to improve the fixation of the implant to the host bone. This chapter discusses methods to characterize critical properties of metallic coatings for orthopaedic devices and also identifies the acceptance standards set by regulatory bodies for these kinds of coatings.
