Book Synopsis Testing of Body Armor Materials by : National Research Council
Download or read book Testing of Body Armor Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-21 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released the report Warfighter Support: Independent Expert Assessment of Army Body Armor Test Results and Procedures Needed Before Fielding, which commented on the conduct of the test procedures governing acceptance of body armor vest-plate inserts worn by military service members. This GAO report, as well as other observations, led the Department of Defense Director, Operational Test & Evaluation, to request that the National Research Council (NRC) Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences conduct a three-phase study to investigate issues related to the testing of body armor materials for use by the U.S. Army and other military departments. Phase I and II resulted in two NRC letter reports: one in 2009 and one in 2010. This report is Phase III in the study. Testing of Body Armor Materials: Phase III provides a roadmap to reduce the variability of clay processes and shows how to migrate from clay to future solutions, as well as considers the use of statistics to permit a more scientific determination of sample sizes to be used in body armor testing. This report also develops ideas for revising or replacing the Prather study methodology, as well as reviews comments on methodologies and technical approaches to military helmet testing. Testing of Body Armor Materials: Phase III also considers the possibility of combining various national body armor testing standards.

Book excerpt: The Army has issued soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan personal body armor, comprising an outer protective vest and ceramic plate inserts. The author observed Preliminary Design Model testing of new plate designs, which resulted in the Army's awarding contracts in Sept. 2008 valued at over $8 billion to vendors of the designs that passed that testing. Between Nov. and Dec. 2008, the Army conducted further testing, called First Article Testing, on these designs. This is a report on the degree to which the Army followed its established testing protocols during these two tests. The author analyzed data, and interviewed agency and industry officials to evaluate observed deviations from testing protocols. Charts and tables.
Book Synopsis Developing a Suite of Ballistic Test Methods in ASTM E54.04 for Better Harmonization and Reuse in Various Ballistic Resistance Performance Standards by : Mark E. Greene

Greene and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) develops performance standards for the unique equipment used by law enforcement and corrections agencies for testing and certification of equipment to ensure it is safe and effective. NIJ published the first performance standard for ballistic-resistant police body armor in 1972 and established body armor conformance testing in the late 1970s. The NIJ Compliance Testing Program ensures that body armor purchased and used by law enforcement in the United States meets minimum performance requirements as demonstrated through standardized ballistic testing to the current NIJ Standard 0101.06, Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor , published in 2008. NIJ is presently working on its seventh revision to its performance standard for ballistic-resistant body armor, NIJ Standard 0101.07, anticipated to be published in 2019. The updated standard will include improved test methods for female body armor and updated protection levels for rifle threats. NIJ and the U.S. Army have been cooperating to harmonize laboratory test procedures and practices in ASTM Subcommittee E54.04 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Unlike the current and previous versions of the NIJ standard, which have been comprehensive, standalone documents, revision 0101.07 will incorporate by reference a suite of standardized test methods and practices developed in ASTM E54.04. Incorporation of relevant ASTM standards by reference into NIJ standards and U.S. Army requirements and testing documents, for example, affords the opportunity to harmonize laboratory test procedures and practices for both law enforcement and military ballistic-resistant armor and other ballistic-resistant equipment while providing those end-user communities with ultimate control over product specifications, such as the specific threats against which their equipment must protect.
Download or read book Body Armor written by Luis E. Sandoval and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an examination of the minimum performance standard developed in collaboration with the Office of Law Enforcement Standards to determine the requirements and test methods for the ballistic resistance of personal body armour intended to protect against gunfire. The standard discussed specifies the minimum performance requirements that equipment must meet to satisfy the requirements of criminal justice agencies and the methods that shall be used to test this performance. Body armour manufacturers and purchasers may use this standard to help determine whether specific armour models meet the minimum performance standards and test methods. The National Institute of Justice standards are subject to continued research, development, testing, review, and revision and are re-evaluated and modified as necessary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, "Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor," is a minimum performance standard developed in colLabouration with the Office of Law Enforcement Standards (OLES) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It is produced as part of the Standards and Testing Program of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice. This standard is a technical book that specifies the minimum performance requirements that equipment must meet to satisfy the requirements of criminal justice agencies and the methods that shall be used to test this performance. This standard is used by the NIJ Voluntary Compliance Testing Program (CTP) to determine which body armour models meet the minimum performance requirements for inclusion on the NIJ Compliant Products List. In addition, manufacturers, criminal justice agencies, and others may use the tests described in this standard to determine whether a particular armour design meets their own requirements. Users are strongly encouraged to have this testing conducted in accordance with the NIJ CTP. Procurement officials may also refer to this standard in their purchasing documents and require that equipment offered for purchase meet or exceed these requirements. This book is a testing and performance standard and provides precise and detailed test methods.
