Book excerpt: This book is addressed to the researchers working in the theory of table algebras and association schemes. This area of algebraic combinatorics has been rapidly developed during the last decade. The volume contains further developments in the theory of table algebras. It collects several papers which deal with a classification problem for standard integral table algebras (SITA). More precisely, we consider SITA with a faithful non-real element of small degree. It turns out that such SITA with some extra conditions may be classified. This leads to new infinite series of SITA which has interesting properties. The last section of the book uses a part of obtained results in the classification of association schemes. This volume summarizes the research which was done at Bar-Ilan University in the academic year 1998/99.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of the two-volume book contains selected papers from the international conference 'Groups St Andrews 2001 in Oxford' which was held at the University of Oxford in August 2001. Five main lecture courses were given at the conference, and articles based on their lectures form a substantial part of the Proceedings. This volume contains the contributions from Marston Conder (Auckland), Persi Diaconis (Stanford) and Marcus Du Sautoy (Cambridge). The series of Proceedings of Groups St Andrews conferences have provided snapshots of the state of research in group theory throughout the past twenty years. As with earlier volumes, these refereed volumes also contain accessible surveys of contemporary research fronts, as well as a diverse collection of short research articles. They form a valuable reference for researchers, especially graduate students, working in group theory.

This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of table algebras was introduced in 1991 by Z. Arad and H. Blau in order to treat, in a uniform way, products of conjugacy classes and irreducible characters of finite groups. Today, table algebra theory is a well-established branch of modern algebra with various applications, including the representation theory of finite groups, algebraic combinatorics and fusion rules algebras. This book presents the latest developments in this area. Its main goal is to give a classification of the Normalized Integral Table Algebras (Fusion Rings) generated by a faithful non-real element of degree 3. Divided into 4 parts, the first gives an outline of the classification approach, while remaining parts separately treat special cases that appear during classification. A particularly unique contribution to the field, can be found in part four, whereby a number of the algebras are linked to the polynomial irreducible representations of the group SL3(C). This book will be of interest to research mathematicians and PhD students working in table algebras, group representation theory, algebraic combinatorics and integral fusion rule algebras.

In particular, these notes contain a description of Peter Jones' geometric traveling salesman theorem, the proof of the equivalence between uniform rectifiability and boundedness of the Cauchy operator on Ahlfors-regular sets, the complete proofs of the Denjoy conjecture and the Vitushkin conjecture (for the latter, only the Ahlfors-regular case) and a discussion of X. Tolsa's solution of the Painlevé problem.

Book excerpt: Since the early 70's, mixed finite elements have been the object of a wide and deep study by the mathematical and engineering communities. The fundamental role of this method for many application fields has been worldwide recognized and its use has been introduced in several commercial codes. An important feature of mixed finite elements is the interplay between theory and application. Discretization spaces for mixed schemes require suitable compatibilities, so that simple minded approximations generally do not work and the design of appropriate stabilizations gives rise to challenging mathematical problems. This volume collects the lecture notes of a C.I.M.E. course held in Summer 2006, when some of the most world recognized experts in the field reviewed the rigorous setting of mixed finite elements and revisited it after more than 30 years of practice. Applications, in this volume, range from traditional ones, like fluid-dynamics or elasticity, to more recent and active fields, like electromagnetism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many partial differential equations arising in practice are parameter-dependent problems that are of singularly perturbed type. Prominent examples include plate and shell models for small thickness in solid mechanics, convection-diffusion problems in fluid mechanics, and equations arising in semi-conductor device modelling. Common features of these problems are layers and, in the case of non-smooth geometries, corner singularities. Mesh design principles for the efficient approximation of both features by the hp-version of the finite element method (hp-FEM) are proposed in this volume. For a class of singularly perturbed problems on polygonal domains, robust exponential convergence of the hp-FEM based on these mesh design principles is established rigorously.

Book excerpt: Being the first monograph devoted to this subject, the book addresses the classification problem for semisimple Hopf algebras, a field that has attracted considerable attention in the last years. The special approach to this problem taken here is via semidirect product decompositions into Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras and group rings of cyclic groups of prime order. One of the main features of the book is a complete treatment of the structure theory for such Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local Newforms for GSp(4) describes a theory of new- and oldforms for representations of GSp(4) over a non-archimedean local field. This theory considers vectors fixed by the paramodular groups, and singles out certain vectors that encode canonical information, such as L-factors and epsilon-factors, through their Hecke and Atkin-Lehner eigenvalues. While there are analogies to the GL(2) case, this theory is novel and unanticipated by the existing framework of conjectures. An appendix includes extensive tables about the results and the representation theory of GSp(4).

Book excerpt: Granular matter displays a variety of peculiarities that distinguish it from other appearances studied in condensed matter physics and renders its overall mathematical modelling somewhat arduous. Prominent directions in the modelling granular flows are analyzed from various points of view. Foundational issues, numerical schemes and experimental results are discussed. The volume furnishes a rather complete overview of the current research trends in the mechanics of granular matter. Various chapters introduce the reader to different points of view and related techniques. New models describing granular bodies as complex bodies are presented. Results on the analysis of the inelastic Boltzmann equations are collected in different chapters. Gallavotti-Cohen symmetry is also discussed.

Book excerpt: The problem of solving nonlinear equations and systems of equations ranks among the most signi?cant in the theory and practice, not only of applied mathematicsbutalsoofmanybranchesofengineeringsciences,physics,c- puter science, astronomy, ?nance, and so on. A glance at the bibliography and the list of great mathematicians who have worked on this topic points to a high level of contemporary interest. Although the rapid development of digital computers led to the e?ective implementation of many numerical methods, in practical realization, it is necessary to solve various problems such as computational e?ciency based on the total central processor unit time, the construction of iterative methods which possess a fast convergence in the presence of multiplicity (or clusters) of a desired solution, the control of rounding errors, information about error bounds of obtained approximate solution, stating computationally veri?able initial conditions that ensure a safe convergence, etc. It is the solution of these challenging problems that was the principal motivation for the present study. In this book, we are mainly concerned with the statement and study of initial conditions that provide the guaranteed convergence of an iterative method for solving equations of the form f(z) = 0. The traditional approach to this problem is mainly based on asymptotic convergence analysis using some strong hypotheses on di?erentiability and derivative bounds in a rather wide domain.

Book excerpt: Starting in the middle of the 80s, there has been a growing and fruitful interaction between algebraic geometry and certain areas of theoretical high-energy physics, especially the various versions of string theory. Physical heuristics have provided inspiration for new mathematical definitions (such as that of Gromov-Witten invariants) leading in turn to the solution of problems in enumerative geometry. Conversely, the availability of mathematically rigorous definitions and theorems has benefited the physics research by providing the required evidence in fields where experimental testing seems problematic. The aim of this volume, a result of the CIME Summer School held in Cetraro, Italy, in 2005, is to cover part of the most recent and interesting findings in this subject.
