Book excerpt: This study examined the actual performance of lower-achieving candidates in Standard Grade English. Information was collected over two years from the examination scripts and folios of course work of over 300 low-achieving students in grades three through six at several large schools throughout Scotland. A number of schools were visited to study the classroom work of a selected number of low-attaining pupils. Results indicated that (1) within each element of the Standard Grade, candidates who achieved different overall Standard Grade awards were clearly separated, as could be seen in the distinct "bands" apparent in the profiles; (2) reading candidates consistently performed better on those criteria related to extracting individual items of information from a text than demonstrating an awareness of literary techniques used in the texts; (3) in writing, candidates were most successful in conveying information but less successful in making use of literary conventions; (4) frequently one of the two pieces included in the writing folio demonstrated a lower level of achievement than the other, lowering the grade given for the folio; (5) the Talking element of Standard Grade English was entirely teacher-assessed but sample sizes were relatively small, and therefore not grouped; and (6) the framework of competencies used to evaluate achievement appeared to work well as an assessment tool. (Nineteen tables and eight figures of data are included; the extended grade-related criteria and appendix of data illustrating performance in the individual criteria are attached.) (RS)
