Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stand by the Union "Stand by the Union' is the fourth of "The Blue and Gray Series." As in the preceding volumes of the series, the incidents of the story are located in the midst of the war of the Rebellion, now dating back nearly thirty years, or before any of my younger readers were born. To those who lived two days in one through that eventful and anxious period, sometimes trembling for the fate of the nation, but always sustained by the faith and the hope through which the final victory was won, it seems hardly possible that so many years have flowed into the vast ocean of the past since that terrible conflict was raging over so large a portion of our now united country. Book excerpt: Stand By The Union By Oliver Optic Though it is said that the South "robbed the cradle and the grave" to recruit the armies of the Confederacy, it is as true that young and old in the North went forth in their zeal to "Stand by the Union," and that many and many a young soldier and sailor who had not yet seen twenty summers endured the hardships of the camp and the march, the broiling suns, and the wasting maladies of semi-tropical seas, fought bravely and nobly for the unity of the land they loved, and that thousands of them sleep their last sleep in unmarked graves on the sea and the land. The writer can remember whole companies, of which nearly half of the number could be classed as mere boys. These boys of eighteen to twenty, who survived the rain of bullets, shot, and shell, and the hardly less fatal assaults of disease, are the middle-aged men of to-day, and every one of them has a thrilling story to tell. The boys of to-day read with interest the narratives of the boys of thirty years ago, and listen with their blood deeply stirred to the recital of the veteran of forty-five years, or even younger, who brought back to his home only one arm or one leg. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Return of Rebellious States to the Union The true patriot will watch with profound interest the fortunes of this intellectual and moral conflict, because the issue involves the country's safety, prosperity, and honor. If victory shall crown the efforts of those brave men who believe and trust in God, then shall all this bloody sacrifice be consecrated, and years of suffering shall exalt us among the nations; if we fail, no triumph of brute force can compensate the world for our um fathomable degradation. Let us, then, endeavor to appreciate the difficulties of our present position. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union College Alumni in the Civil War, 1861-1865 The preparation of this Record has been a great pleasure because of the feeling that simple justice was being done those who served in the Civil War. It was intended to be a compilation of Official Records and is to a great degree, but some information, which seemed fairly reliable, could not be confirmed from official sources. Such records will be easily recognized by the absence of official dates. The Collegiate and honor degrees are given as of last known records. When officers stayed in the service after the war that fact is indicated. Brevet appointments were made "for gallant and meritorious services," which is implied where not stated. It is hoped that the publication of this highly creditable Civil War record of Union's Alumni will lead to the erection of a Permanent Memorial at the College. "Yea, let all good things await Him who cares not to be great But as he saves or serves the state. Not once or twice in our rough island-story The path of duty was the way to glory." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Union-State: A Letter to Our States-Rights Friend The production of these pages originated in a brief correspondence with a citizen of one of the North western States, who had, in a recent publication, pre sented an argument in defense of the States of the Southern Confederacy in asserting a right to secede from the Union. In our discussion, the historical question of the actual political status of the thirteen States, at the time when the Constitution was proposed for ratification by them, seemed, to each of us, the question which required to be settled at the outset, as between ourselves. I stand on a cliff of an Island green, I stand facing the East, the sun is near to earth, the blaze of its glory brightens the sea before me showing more plainly the green of the moving water. I turn me about to the west, oh how beautiful the land, then I look at the wonderous sun lighting all things on earth, sky and sea (raising hand) and I seem to hear the Almighty's voice at the creation, let there be light, and there was light. Thousands of years pass by. I stand near the dessert of judea. I hear the people which sat in darkness saw great light, and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. I hear john the Baptist say I am sent to bear witness of that light. Again Go ye into all the world, preach the gospel to every creature, beginning first at jerusalem.
