Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

Book excerpt: "A potent argument for bioenergy development lies in the ability of the sector to unlock agricultural potential by bringing in much needed investments to raise agricultural productivity to spur food security and poverty reduction. This document presents the BEFS Analytical Framework (AF) developed to test this argument. Agriculture lies at the heart of the BEFS AF and allows governments to consider viable pro-poor strategies for bioenergy development. The set of tools within the BEFS AF offers an integrated approach to decision-making that combines the technical viability with the country's prevailing social and economic development objectives. This document explains the rationale and structure of the BEFS AF, provides a general overview of the tools and their application, and illustrates how the analytical information generated assists policy makers in making informed decisions concerning the many varied consequences of bioenergy developments on food security, poverty reduction and agriculture development and economic growth."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed overview of aspects related to the overall provision chain for biokerosene as part of the global civil aviation business. Starting with a review of the current market situation for aviation fuels and airplanes and their demands, it then presents in-depth descriptions of classical and especially new types of non-edible biomass feedstock suitable for biokerosene provision. Subsequent chapters discuss those fuel provision processes that are already available and those still under development based on various biomass feedstock materials, and present e.g. an overview of the current state of the art in the production of a liquid biomass-based fuel fulfilling the specifications for kerosene. Further, given the growing interest of the aviation industry and airlines in biofuels for aviation, the experiences of an air-carrier are presented. In closing, the book provides a market outlook for biokerosene. Addressing a broad range of aspects related to the pros and cons of biokerosene as a renewable fuel for aviation, the book offers a unique resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of ethical investment funds reflects a growing desire for investors to back socially responsible companies. And there are other sound reasons why companies that are seen to be ethical, environmentally friendly, good employers etc, can see real benefits to their bottom line. Recent revisions to stock market rules have made ethical funds available to a much wider group of advisors and investors. This important book explains the issues and the benefits of corporate social responsibility in the context of an analysis of the 300 quoted UK companies currently listed on the prestigious FTSE4Good index. Part One covers recent corporate ethics issues and the damage that revelations of dishonesty and unethical practice can do to stock markets. It explains how businesses can avoid these problems and why it is good to do so. The criteria whereby companies are seen to be 'socially responsible' and the growing importance of SR to investors and other stakeholders are addressed. The performance of the FTSE4Good index is studied, and there is analysis of how the sector compares to the general market. Part Two contains a full directory of the 300 companies listed on the FTSE4Good index, and tables showing how companies fit the criteria. This is followed by individual company profiles and company case studies including: Centrica, EMI, Friends Provident, Whitbread, National Express and National Grid.

The sector's transition to sustainable, renewable fuels, therefore, is crucial to meet the international climate targets set forth in the 2015 Paris Agreement. This brief examines how the expansion of biofuels for jet aircraft can reduce emissions substantially compared to fossil-based jet fuel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a guidebook to help airports understand renewable energy opportunities. The report includes instructions and tools to evaluate proposed renewable energy projects and their alternatives so that an informed decision that maximizes financial, self-sustainability, environmental, and social benefits can be reached. The report lays out what a business case is, why renewable energy is important, and what a business case for renewable energy looks like. It describes the importance of identifying the project objective and understanding how renewable energy might fit into an airport’s vision. A decision-making matrix is included that contains criteria used to evaluate a renewable energy project with a system for weighting each factor based on an airport’s particular objectives. The report presents a business case in the context of an airport’s typical master planning and capital improvement planning processes including engagement of key stakeholders. The report provides a model business case that evaluates a solar photovoltaic facility, a fossil fuel generator, and a fuel cell as options for providing on-site electricity generation to improve an airport’s energy stability and resiliency. It also includes examples of renewable energy business cases from both aviation and non-aviation organizations to highlight lessons learned. A sample request for proposals and a sample power purchase agreement are provided for project implementation. A CD-ROM (CRP-CD-177) provides supplemental information.

Itdemonstrates stakeholder mapping, presents the power/interestmatrix and analyses a model for the timely engagement ofstakeholders. The increased use of partnering and other relational forms ofcontracting have underlined the need for project participants towork together and also to be aware of all those who can affect orbe affected by a project and its associated developments.Stakeholder management enables them to see this wider picture andprovides guidance for managing the diverse views and interests thatcan manifest in the course of a project’s life. All construction projects have the potential for conflicts ofinterest that can result in costly and damaging legal proceedings. This new book advocates an alternative to dispute resolution thatis proactive, practical and global in its application.Construction Stakeholder Management is therefore anessential text for advanced students, lecturers, researchers andpractitioners in the built environment.

This paper overviews power sector challenges and takes stock of national and regional strategies to address them. It presents recommendations to move the energy agenda forward based on analyses of macro-aspects of energy reform. These include: i) quantitative assessment of the impact of energy costs on growth and competitiveness; ii) evaluation of gains from implementing announced renewable energy and energy efficiency targets; and iii) analysis of the impact of energy investments on debt sustainability. The paper argues for a bigger role for the private sector in energy reform and discusses prerequisites for good public-private partnerships.
